Iridescent Edge 414 June 15 Share June 15 Uhhhh...What do I put here? Anyway, adding a reaction that says "confused" or "huh?" would be a useful feature on this site. I get that you're probably really busy, but I would appreciate it. And if you don't do this, I can understand, if you give a good reason. 7 1 ('c')
Raskolnikov 1,533 June 15 Share June 15 (edited) On that note, I've found myself wanting a "thinking" or "shrug" reaction too. Maybe with the new smilies coming around soon we could use some of them for new reactions too? Maybe even a "wink" reaction... how possible would it be to make a reaction like the 💯 emoji, or a "^ this" reaction, but with an MLP style font? Edit: ohhh or a 'salute' reaction? Rikifive 24,671 June 15 Share June 15 (edited) Yeah, I agree there could be more reactions, but it's tricky. Adding more by itself isn't a big deal. However, there's a more complex problem with these to keep in mind - to avoid reactions, that can cause drama. In the past we had more reactions, but users started misusing them for passive aggression, which over time spawned more and more reports where users complained on receiving "xxxxx" reaction from someone. This eventually led to changes and removal of some. For example, the "confused" or "huh" could be seen by some as annoying, if the user just dropped "huh" reaction without replying to elaborate what confused them. "shrug" could easily be abused too. Like, if someone would drop that reaction on someone stating their opinion, without replying to elaborate why they disagree. This could equal to "nobody cares about your opinion". That was actually an insanely common case with the "laugh" reaction depicting laughing Rainbow Dash, before it was decided to replace it with "delighted giggle". What was designed for laughs, jokes and memes, was misused to laugh at users. Basically the problem was, that reactions were often used as a substitute to posts. Why put effort and time to write words if someone could just come, laugh at someone's opinion, and call it a day. This was leaving post authors irritated. Because staff at the time didn't want to deal with this problem on case-by-case basis, it was decided to redesign it and limit reactions to ones with more positive/respectful meaning. Personally I wasn't a big fan of this solution, because now the reactions aren't as expressive as they once were. The current "giggle" reaction just doesn't capture the laugh you'd like to react with on a meme that made you laugh, for example. That is essentially why the reactions aren't as functional as users would probably like. Personally I'd like to see more reactions, some changed, but that's just my take and I can't speak for all staff and entire community. That does suck, I did note there were no 'negative' ones like 'angry' which I assumed weren't there to avoid this kinda problem but I had no idea people were abusing the shrug and laugh ones before... It didn't even cross my mind you could weaponise a shrug response?! whaaat lol How long ago was this? Because I can't imagine people here doing this anymore o_o", I feel like resolving problems on a case by case basis sounds better than penalising everyone because of a few past misbehavers, though I may simply just be ignorant on the magnitude of the problem in the past... I do agree some reactions like angry ones would have too much potential for abuse and would be a bad idea but doing it to neutral ones kinda sucks :< I don't know how others feel about this though? 3 "None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free." Normally - when thinking about status updates or casual posts - they weren't being misused, but the moment you went into topics discussing politics... The debate area has a nasty history. And don't underestimate users When obvious weapons were removed, they started weaponizing other reactions, just to spite their opponents It's been a while, it was back in 2019. Maybe the scale wasn't as dramatic, but the problem was big enough to cause changes and spawn a dedicated announcement about it... https://mlpforums.com/topic/187239-how-we-will-address-reactions-going-foward/ Yeah, like I said, I wasn't really a fan of that solution either. Penalizing the entire community doesn't sound fair, but it wasn't up to me to decide. Personally I was thinking of disabling reactions for problematic users, or disabling that system in areas, where reactions cause more problems than solve. Either way, I'm just bringing some older news to give backstory on why the current reactions are like this. It's not like staff doesn't want more reactions. Things have changed and calmed down, maybe now it all could be used in the intended way - for fun. If I was asked for opinion, I'd vote for trying to add more again, but I imagine some could have a different view on this - and not just staffers, but perhaps some users too. 2 ❤ ■■■■■■■■■■ ⭐ ■■■■■■■■■■
Raskolnikov 1,533 June 16 Share June 16 I was wondering if it had to do with the Debate Pit I don't imagine there's a way to disable reactions exclusively in the Soapbox, but in any case there's not quite so much traffic in there anymore so maybe it'll be okay now in terms of drama? I do agree it'd be nice for there to be a staff reconsideration of this depending on how stable things are on their end right now... Maybe add it as a reward for the current event LMFAO "if y'all can behave and prove you can be niceys to each other you can have treats" KIDDING I'M KIDDING I'M KIDDING I 3 "None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free." Removing the spooky response to replace it with a voice note which conveys tone a lot better. https://voca.ro/12ii32B2nqIY I had opened up a club for emoji requests that shall be made public at some point but not right now but there we can properly discuss what would work and what would not. I apologise to anyone spooked by my closing the thread and responding as I did. There is a lot of "passive aggressive" jabs that people sneak in with emojis and if someone keeps pushing for a certain one then it is best to just redirect this to a proper location for discussion for why or why not we should or should not have it. 5
