My Little Message to "Bronies" Who Hate

Comet Tail

I hate a character, but that doesn't mean I'm not a brony. What you said was just a giant, obnoxious generalization.

And to that, I bid you a good day, my good sir.

All of this boils down to tolerance. I don't think it's right to force us not to dislike other ponies, but I think it's wrong if you "hate" other ponies for liking a certain pony. That sounded really confusing. Essentially, we should all have our own voice, but we should be aware of other pony's views, regardless if we dislike them or not. Unfortunately, our world (not equestria) is built upon intolerance and hate. In the human realm, we are all taught to shy away from something that is not "normal," or to not associate with "others."

I grew up in a Jewish family and was sent to Hebrew school where we were constantly taught not to associate ourselves with non-Jews. It was beat into our head that the only good people were Jews. This, among many other reasons is why I renounced my Jewish faith as well as all religion (I'm an atheist). However, I still have deep respect for all other religions and beliefs, because everyone should be allowed to follow whatever they believe.

I just wish there was more tolerance and love in our world. That is why I truly love Equestria, it is a place of harmony and friendship. A place where everypony is accepted and everypony has a place. However, we should still be allowed to have our own beliefs as long as we accept other pony's views and continue to be friends.

Someone is going bit overboard about this...

I hate to say it(cwutididthar????) but the one person that seems most against what the show stands for is the one who is acting so vigorously against the so called "haters". Saying things like you don't tolerate hate. I'm sorry, but that isn't really Love or Tolerance. You act pretty hatefully in this topic even though you don't seem want to admit that to yourself.

In a way I disagree. One isn't necessarily a hater if one hates one character in the show and that character alone. Since people have different opinions people might dislike the different characters fo some reason or another and they should have that right without being branded a hater.

I really didn't like the Hearts and Hooves episode(just didn't sit right with me for some reason) and under extreme circomstances you could say I "hate" it. Does that make me a hater? Not as far as I see it.

Then again, I define a hater as someone who goes out of their way to spew hate on something and use every opportunity they get.

I like to do requests. Please, if there is something you want to see me, an amateur, draw for you, just send me a PM with the details and I'll say yay or nay. Most likely yay.

To be fair, I don't think it's a genuine hate most of those supposed haters feel. Just a dislike for what the characters represent, though perhaps that might be optimistic of me.

I actually made a big thread about haters. It's a psychological process, most of which is subconscious. The limbic system that controls emotions is actually separate from the neocortex, which is responsible for higher thought and conscious thinking. As a result, while we're superficially aware of our emotions, such as hate, we're often not aware of their causes.

But, they do have causes, they simply usually lie underneath our immediate consciousness. The neocortex and Limbic are connected, no doubt, so discovery of the causes is possible, and is logical as is our conscious, intellectual mind.

But if you're interested in why haters hate, then try a look at my thread "Why do Haters Hate?"

I hate a character, but that doesn't mean I'm not a brony. What you said was just a giant, obnoxious generalization. And to that, I bid you a good day, my good sir. /)_-

Saying things like you don't tolerate hate. I'm sorry, but that isn't really Love or Tolerance. You act pretty hatefully in this topic even though you don't seem want to admit that to yourself.

Let's put it this way:

I was pretty direct with the example of Gilda. Rainbow Dash didn't tolerate Gilda's hating on her friends, and the show pretty much clearly emphasized that Rainbow Dash was on the moral high ground. It's not hate, it's intolerance, and some things are worth not tolerating. Gilda's attitude, and since it didn't change, Gilda, was worth not tolerating. In fact, "tolerance" was never the show's theme at all. The show's theme is Friendship, which is a form of love despite differences, that's where we get "tolerate" from, tolerating individuals. But it's very different than tolerating an abstract idea such as hate, especially something as destructive as hate.

When Pinkie sees that a pony is feeling depressed, she wants to cheer them up. So is she being hateful, to not tolerate depression?

Was Pinkie being hateful towards Gilda, when she threw a party to change Gilda's attitude?

Essentially this is about the same thing. If you hate one pony, and like another, then you're a Gilda, and you need a Pinkie party to change that attitude.

So either change your attitude, like Pinkie was trying to do, or take Rainbow Dash's speech, which is what happened when Gilda didn't.

It's one thing to wish they were written better, or animated different, or whatever. That's critical review of the script writing, that's totally different, but personally hating them as an individual is a whole different territory.

But definitely don't get me wrong. I don't hate anyone. Any "hatefulness" isn't mine, but is imagined within the text. Rainbow Dash didn't hate Gilda, she just didn't tolerate Gilda being a jerk to her friends, and Pinkie didn't tolerate the attitude, and I don't either. It needs to change, to be better. After all, like I said, hatefulness never was happiness. So it's really no different than Pinkie trying to cheer up a pony and make them happy, that's what I'm trying to do, too.

I see hate growing in the community, which is the enemy to happiness, and I want to stop it.

I'm sorry to point this out but: It's understandable, but still. Just best to be careful how things are worded "hate brings only more hate"

- you had a bit of an error in posting that, it doubled itself. Just to tellya ;)

Yeah, you have to combat hate with love, but at times it takes being firm, because hate is a rather powerful thing, and certain people can get somehow convinced that hate is okay, when clearly, it is not, and brings nothing but pain to it's bearers and targets. As this thread has shown, it takes great tact to show that firmness without coming across as more hate. But because there's no voice, and a reader will always add a voice or a tone, it may even be impossible. So in the future I should try to show firmness with love.

Your faithful student, Twilight Sparkle.

Lol, no really, it sounds like I just wrote Celestia a letter. :P

[ADDED]

To all;

If you feel like any of the OP was a personal attack, it wasn't. It was only meant to try to get rid of hate, not attack any individuals. If you feel like it was attacking you... You probably have some hate you need to get rid of. Because how can we create a world without hate, if you're okay with the hate you have? To believe in wanting to make Equestria on Earth, and simultaneously hating anything, is impossible. A great world like that cannot exist as long as hate is present. While I would never persecute individuals who are still in the process of self-realization, and have not yet rid themselves of hate, I would urge them to never give up, and say today is the day to stop hating. It is a choice, and the sooner you forgive, drop hatred, try to imagine yourself in the place of others, use sympathy, and love, then the sooner you will find true happiness, and the closer we will come to making an "Equestria on Earth".

Gilda didn't hate one pony she hated everypony. That is a big difference. She even hated Rainbow Dash after she "stopped being cool". Gilda being a bully and in general hateful "person" is not comparable to someone hating one character or two.

Gilda had a rotten attitude altogether. Someone who hates Rarity just hates Rarity and isn't necessarily that mean about anything else. The hate characters like Rarity get is not this destructive hate you describe. The hate that people feel is just strong dislike.

In this context Hate and Depression are so different emotions that they should not be compared the way you just did. Hate is fueled by an opinion. Depression is more or less involuntary.

Hating a character is pretty much a choice and isn't malicious because you are not harming anyone by hating a character by yourself. It's different if you spread the hate. T

he reason you felt so hateful and aggressive was because it felt like you were saying that we are not allowed to feel what we want to feel.

Let's say that I really despise and even hate America(i don't hate America, i love that country) but i don't express my hate and i don't offend any of them because I'm respectful. Am i not allowed to hate them for doing things i really do not approve of? It makes me a bit of closed minded sure, but it doesn't make me a bad person.

Well if it's a strong dislike, then it's not hate.

And you realize, this is basically telling me not to oppose something.

To say: "Am I not allowed to express an opinion?", is really quiet paradoxical. Am I not allowed to express my opinion? I'm just disagreeing with hate.

And nowhere did I ever say "bad person". Those are words you added.

And Gilda was only mad at Rainbow Dash after Rainbow Dash gave her speech. Gilda called the pranks "lame", but more than anything else, this is when RD realized that Gilda was being a jerk.

And once again, I see the fallacy of "if I secretly X, it doesn't hurt anyone"; it's a fallacy. What affects you emotionally, effects others. Hate is a terrible thing that hurts it's holder, often far more than it's target. And because you exist, that hurt will effect others, quiet as simple as that. As John Donne wrote in Meditation 17, IIRC, mankind is like Europe. When a small piece of land falls in the sea, the entire continent is a little less. When one person is unhappy, we're all a little less.

And it's far more than just a sentiment. Truly, something that affects you, will affect your actions in a manner that it affects others, and the scary thing is you won't even be aware of it, but it certainly will.

And, hate is like depression, it's like depression because it is the enemy of true happiness. You cannot be truly happy and consciously hate at the same time. Forgiveness beings peace, because anger, hate, brings turmoil to the soul.

When someone says that they hate something it is rarely true hate. When someone that someone would be better of dead, they rarely mean that from the bottom of their heart. People do not truly hate characters of tv shows unless they make themselves a target for the hate(for example by being evil). People who really hate something good badly enough to want to cause real harm have a bigger problem inside their heads.

The most common form of “hate” is just opinionated strong dislike.

You think it's a fallacy because you think I'm talking about this “destructive hatred”. When I'm not. It's not correct to call strong dislike hate? Well so many of us do it anyway and nothing can be done about it.

I didn't say you aren't allowed to express opinions. I said that you come of that way. Just because you don't say something or don't mean it doesn't mean it can't look like you did. Expressing yourself clearly without a smaller chance of being misunderstood is a skill(something I don't put enough effort into). Misinterpretation is something that's caused by both ends.

“And Gilda was only mad at Rainbow Dash after Rainbow Dash gave her speech”

Exactly what I meant by saying that Rainbow Dash stopped being cool. The problem is that it was too vague for you to see that.

Refusing to acknowledge the flaws a show or a character might have, has lead to the cancellation of many shows in the past. It also led to all the trouble that Sega had with their mascot for all those years. This all hinges on one word: Loyalty (incidentally, an Element of Harmony).

EASA, God knows I agree with alot of the points you're trying to make there. But I have to be blunt. What most people don't realize, is that there are two kinds of loyalty. There's blind loyalty, and then there's true loyalty.

There is a big difference between blind loyalty and true loyalty. Blind loyalty is finding no fault with something or someone, despite there being overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Basically, you follow a person or a show (in this case) and it 'can do no wrong' in your eyes. Anyone that criticizes it isn't a 'true fan' in your eyes or is a 'hater'. This is not only blind loyalty, but it's seriously delusional.

True loyalty means being able to speak openly about what you think is right, and what you think might be wrong. That doesn't mean it's alright for someone to just troll because they actually DO hate the show. That gets nothing done. But if you clearly see something wrong with the show or a character that you think could be improved, then as a fan of the show, it is sort of your responsibility to point it out and explain why.

I definitely agree, this is the sort of thing I was getting at with the point on critical review versus actually hating the character.

I mean, a lot of the haters out there hate it without giving it a second chance or thought, and if they ever do look at it, only focus on the negative aspects and call it childish garbage.

Really, life, everything to some extant is a half-full glass. You can focus on the negative or focus on the positive. Some people will just look at certain characters and ignore all their positive traits for their shortcomings. That's pretty much looking at the glass half-empty.

And there is a psychological tendency to form an opinion and cement it, without giving a character a second chance. It happens in real life. A perfect example is a girl who trips on the first day in her new school. Immediately everyone thinks she's a klutz, titles her that way, makes fun of her, she becomes a laughingstock, and people are too afraid to become friends with her, and she becomes a social outcast.

She goes to a different school, and becomes a social leader. True story.

She was never a "klutz" or unskilled socially, she was just unlucky. But people saw that one thing, and immediately they noticed negative aspects about her, to such a great extant that they failed to notice the positive. Their opinion was cemented, she was a klutz, and there was nothing she could do to redeem herself.

Some individuals I've come across seem to be the exact same way about characters, saying Rainbow Dash is a jerk, or Rarity is selfish and horrible. They have their low moments, but overall, RD will be loyal when it really matters, and will try very hard to support her friends when she sees it counts (like "Hurricane Fluttershy", or when Rarity fell, despite being a jerk to her the entire episode, in "Sonic Rainboom"), and Rarity is, in fact, very generous, almost always positive, creative, hardworking at what she does and always tries to be helpful.

Now, there's certainly a balance. Of course the show isn't perfect, but a lot of criticisms are only a matter of taste. There are some things that just stand out, for sure, like everyone acting like a jerk in "Putting Your Hoof Down" or Twilight having a never-before-seen brother. Or you could say something doesn't seem right about a character, like Rainbow Dash suddenly becoming cruel to animals in "May the Best Pet Win", or Rarity becoming a drama queen in "Lesson Zero" (though, to be honest, on second thought those both seem very in-character, to me), but that's very different from hating a character on a personal level, as an individual, as opposed to a fictional element.

Even then, a judgement of poor quality, I don't think you can even call that "hate" in any sense, since it's an objective sort of review.

The only thing I think one should hate, is maybe the taste of some nasty food :P

Wow... I just realized I'm very preachy...

So, you hate?...

My Reply:

I think on that note I'll launch a much less hateful thread about my reviews for each character...
