Bohtty 1,775 June 18, 2012 Share June 18, 2012 E-mails would run on the server the website is run on and if you use it for spam then it could take up a lot of space quickly. Feld0 uses that server for other things besides this website. It's up to him of course and he knows his server more then anyone else here and I trust whatever decision he makes regarding it. 2 Legit signature made by Shift. Yes, but as far as I know, nopony has said anything about the feature being removed. I just realized it was gone when I saw Apple Bloom's profile. I just get lonely... No, not really. Your guess is as good as mine I suppose. Edited June 18, 2012 by frenzyhero Swoop said: If something does happen to go horribly wrong, please, blame Zoop. As much as I like the idea, Bohtty has an excellent point. It could very easily take up unnecessary space. However, with how powerful the new hosting company is and how massive it's space is, it could probably handle it to an extent. What about this. If you are a donor, you have a choice to have this separate email, that way they don't have to take up that extra space if they don't want to. Also, if they have one and they never use it, perhaps it would be automatically shut down by Feld0 or the system? Lastly, as an alternate possibility, maybe it could only be available for subscribers as an added bonus? That way it's a small encouragement to subscribe, and there aren't too many people with them, thus saving space. Edited June 18, 2012 by Silvoid 1 ~Relax and enJOY life. And the other thing about a choice from donators was already there too. I think it was like this: If you donated a little bit more than usual you could choose if you wanted an email from mlp forums or not.

Founder Twilight Sparkle ✨ 8,527 June 18, 2012 Founder Share June 18, 2012 I remember back when you got yourself an email with the @mlpforums.com if you donated a certain amount of money to the forums. Is this removed? Because I have donated $53 and wants one badly :3 tl;dr answer: Yes, this was removed a while ago. One thing I want to quickly add to that is that offering any kind of rewards for donating a set sum of money over time (or at once) may seem logical to you as the donor, but it doesn't mesh well with the actual cost of providing the reward, which recurs on a regular basis. To illustrate this, if I offered 1 GB of web hosting space to people who donated $20, but that 1 GB cost $10/month to provide, I would be providing that reward at a loss after two months and would need to subsidize it somehow. So I'm not a fan of "permanent" rewards that I need to support forever even if you stop donating. Long answer: We used to have a subscriptions-exclusive system for donations before introducing the donation tracker, but the issue with that was that I had to process just about everything manually. One of the perks was getting an @mlpforums.com forwarder if you donated over $5, and getting that forwarder turned into a proper email account if you donated over $15. This worked well enough for a time, except that I needed to set all email accounts and forwarders up manually. As the cost of hosting MLP Forums rose (the current server costs more than five times as much as the one I launched the site with - your $53 of donations have paid about 16% of one month's bill, Jokuc) and the frequency of donations increased, it was clear that a fully automated solution was needed. I upgraded to a PayPal Premier account and purchased the donation tracker application that would handle promotions/demotions/that stuff automatically. The option to get an mlpforums.com email forwarder or account was removed as part of this automation (note that existing accounts were not removed, and still continue to function to this day). Server resources aren't a very big deal as long as people understand that we're not trying to replace Gmail or Hotmail, and don't expect a massive storage quota in the gigabytes. The donations you make should be paying for the site, not your email account. I have considered re-introducing email addresses as a donor reward in some way, but I'm not sure what the best way to do so would be. IP.Nexus, which handles the new subscriptions system we have now, can run a custom script upon a successful purchase, so it may be possible to automate the assignment of new email addresses using that if cPanel has a decent API I can work with. 5 Avatar credit: robinrain8 Signature credit: Kyoshi
