Blog system

Take notice that is a SUGGESTION, nothing more. Just curious as to what other ponies think. As you see on a number of many sites, there is a blog system in place for users to write about their days, or anything else. I was wondering what you ponies thought of having one on the forum, as writing a blog like think in the non pony section could clutter things. Just curious.

I've seen blogs done before, and they don't normally cause any issues. In the end it's up to Omnipony if he wants to place blogs in the same mindset as chat. The question is would they simply be an actual forum section where people all post their own topic to have as their blog, or would there be an integrated blog feature?

It really depends. On what I've seen, people have like, a section for their blogs on their pages, and people can comment on such. But it would also work for a section of writing!

IPS have an official add-on available that can add blogs to the site in a snap, IP.Blog. But there are a couple of crucial questions that need to be answered to consider adding user blogs.

1) Will user blogs be updated often enough, and with material worth reading, to justify their existence?

2) How is running a blog on MLP Forums preferable to running a blog on your own website, or an existing SaaS service like WordPress.com or Blogspot?

I would like to see everyone's answers to these questions. :)

On a side note, if anyone is interested in setting up a blog of their own, that is something I can help with and provide hosting for, regardless of whether we end up adding user blogs to MLP Forums or not.

1. Yes, in my opinion, it would be active, because as we know many people have tough lives here, and talking about it could help massively. 2. Because we at MLP forums are family. Telling other people on the forums with a blog is like telling your closest friends your life. It is much more comfortable then a blog with random viewers!

I can't really see most people taking advantage of a feature like this. While there will undoubtedly be a few who do take the time to write daily posts, most members already use status updates for this very reason.

This is the bigger problem of this issue. I'm from a forum that's active, not quite as active as this one, but still very active. They have blogs. Nopony uses them because while they were created under the reason of 'day-to-day status updates and life occurrences', there's simple a lack of usage. And the reason has to do with the fact that most of those 'big occurrences that people want to post about', can be posted in the Life Advice section or somewhere else. So yes, good point Omnipony, I had been thinking of this as well.

But do you think posting more than one thread about their day to day life is what anyone wants in the life advice section?

With a blog, someone can get constant advice, and not have to spam threads.

We ALL remember the life advice threads long ago that led to the birth of the section.

I'm not for or against any of this :3 No need to try and convince me of anything, I'm just pointing out and bolding the point that omnipony brought up, that the blogs may not be as active as they need to be, due to more of the big singular event topics being posted elsewhere, combined with the fact many will simply not maintain a daily or even frequently run blog, and will only do it for a while.

Would the blogs be able to be reported to the staff or will it be completely hands-off? Because that could create a new stage for people to spam their hearts out (which I guess is better than doing it inside the forums) or worse spread some message that goes breaks the rules.

I'm ambivalent and I guess I'd like to see more parameters or details fleshed out before having an opinion for or against it.

IP.Blog fully integrates the report system. :)

Well, that's good to know at least. I dunno, I believe we could certainly try it out for a while and see how it goes, see if it works. The issue of 'will it be worth it's existence' can be best answered by practice, I think.

I'd take part. I'd give story updates as well...we all know Crona would.

You guys might be good writers :P

But I'm not sure if most people would bother to write out a page-log blog about their life each day. I mean, if they have anything important, that can be a thread, and some general commentary would go under statuses.

+1 support on blog system. It will make stalking much easier

1) Will user blogs be updated often enough, and with material worth reading, to justify their existence?

I know at least eight user from here that will surely without a doubt posting so many worthwhile blogs. It could be anything from their everyday life, problems, or even a personal collection of their favorites stuff. It will make a quite entertaining read. At least for me

2) How is running a blog on MLP Forums preferable to running a blog on your own website, or an existing SaaS service like WordPress.com or Blogspot?

Because it will be much easier for us to comment on their blog post and trashtalking with them. And those pesky lurkers (me) can easily monitor their activities?

3) How will the addition of user blogs serve our goal to be the world's favourite My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic forum?

No answer available for that one

Let me add one more question for consideration. :)

Because Friendship is magic feld0, and sharing your life/problems with your friends and getting advice is what friends are for, of course!

Keep the feedback coming, guys. At this moment, neither the staff nor I have a strong opinion on the possible addition of user blogs either way, so it's great to keep an open discussion running over the topic. :)

Personally, I don't want to see the blogs suffer the same fate as IP.Chat and IP.Gallery (ie. they were removed because they added nothing of any real, lasting value to the site).

Especially since those two were eventually usurped by a third party source (Skype and DeviantART respectively) much like your initial suggestion about having a Blogspot/Blogger/Wordpress whatever account

Like I said, no strong feelings either way for me.
