A Dark Path.

Ashpaw blended in with the dark surroundings of the forest Shadow clan called home. With the darkness veiling his fur, the mouse could not of heard him coming. He had seen cats kill other cats before, so he knew the vital points of an animal. Within moments Ashpaw had his teeth in the neck of the small mouse.

Muddpaw had brought back a whole pile of food, and her mentor was proud of her.

She mewed happily as he praised her.

"You're a great hunter, Muddpaw!" He meowed, licking her head.

She nuzzled him in return.

"Where is the clan leader, Spottedstar? I must tell her about all this food you've caught us!"

Lionclaw said, almost smiling.

He trotted off in search for her.

Moonstar stared out at the river- it was low today.

She sighed and jumped off her high rock and went back to her den.

There was a shortage of food and water this month, she'd have to ask if she could have a bit of space on the Thunderclan side, next gathering.

"Moonstar, Lilyflower is about to have her kits!"

Moonstar jumped up and ran to the nursery- she didn't deal with kits, but she was a leader, and if she wasn't there for the birthing of new warriors, she would be asked awkward questions.

Cheetahpaw gave a small sigh of aggravation, but got back up, he slowly began to circle her, he tensed up his hind legs, but instead of springing over her, he leaped at her legs, swiping at her fore paws to make her fall over.

Lionclaw came back to Muddpaw, looking a bit down.

"Sorry, Muddpaw. Spottedstar isn't here right now. She's off training a apprentice."

Muddpaw sighed but shrugged.

"It's okay, Lionclaw!"

She nuzzled him.

"I'll be sure to let her know what a great job you did when she gets back, okay?"

He said, calling after her.

She nodded, and went to take her bath.

Hawkfire smiled. "See? Sometimes it's best to discover your own way of doing things - much better than copying someone else."

He nudged the other two apprentices and pointed out another mouse, just barely visible beneath the fallen leaves. "Now you two try."

Mudpaw scrambled to his feet, startled, and clumsily leapt in the direction of the mouse, missing it by two tail-lengths. Desperately, Sunpaw shot after him, missing it as well and hitting her head on a tree trunk. Hawkstar winced, and the mouse scrambled away beneath the thick vegetation.

"Okay, maybe that's enough self-learning for today." He slinked around for a good minute before he found a third mouse, scurrying near a tall tree trunk. Carefully, he crouched down low until his belly was almost touching the ground, and crawled forward a few tail-lengths towards the mouse. Taking a split second to judge the distance, he pounced upon it, his hind legs giving him just the amount of momentum he needed to catch the mouse without hitting the tree trunk himself. A swift bite to the neck dispatched his prey quite easily.

He turned back to the three apprentices. "Now once you have your prey, just bury it so some other creature won't chance upon it. And remember where you put it, of course. He quickly dug a small hole for the dead mouse as he talked. "Remember, we've got an entire clan to feed, so I expect to see some honest improvement out of all of you."

Ashpaw tilted his head once more and said,

"But Hawkstar, we're supposed to take the fresh kill to the elders to eat, and the younger ones eat the remains!"

Hawkstar sighed wearily.

"Running back and forth to and from camp after one kill is much slower and less efficient than hunting your prey all at once, gathering it up, and heading back to camp with everything you've caught," he said patiently.

Spottedstar and nodded.

“But, that’s why your CheetaPAW” she purred.

She shock the sand off her fur and started to climb up out of the hallow.

“But I know that you’ll be a fine warrior, one that I would have been proud to of mentored” she meowed at him.

“Do you want to last minute hunting training., then we can go back and you’ll share it with the elders” she asked.

Ashpaw mewed in amusement.

"You're so silly Hawkstar. How have you forgotten we carry the kill on our backs, so we carry them all when we are done?"

(BBAABAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH)

Cheetahpaw felt a swell of pride at the praise, he always dreamed of the moment he would become a warrior. His ears perked up and his eyes brightened at the mention of hunting, quickly shaking the sand from his fur, he bounded after her "Sure!"

((you said ashpaw, it's Cheetahpaw))

((sorry brain fart! X3))

Spottedstar padded quickly and silently through the undergrowth.

“Remember to stay up wind, be light on your paws” she told him.

She opened her mouth and let the sent in.

“what’s in the air?” she asked him.

Spottedstar nodded with a smile from whisker to whisker.

“Is there one near by for an easy catch” she asked.

She dropped in a crotch as she stalked forward before killing a mouse.

“It’s that simple” she told him cover over her kill.

(You troll...-_-)

Hawkstar sighed. "You can, if you want. But I prefer not to have prey I've caught flying all over the place every time I have to jump, pounce, or run. And you'll definitely be doing a lot of running if, say, that delicious squirrel you're looking at decides to take flight somewhere else."

Ashpaw mewed again, enjoying his little game with Hawkstar.

"But Hawkstar, you're being absolutely silly! We put all of the kills in a pile, and then when we're done we take them back!"

Hawkstar prayed silently to Starclan to give him the patience he needed. The other two apprentices were hiding their laughter behind their tails.

"It is," Hawkstar said cooly. "Faster. If we bury as we catch, and go back for them afterwards, rather than running towards a predetermined location. We might as well just take each and every single kill back to camp otherwise as we acquire them."

Ashpaw began to move his tail in his amusement.

"But then the scent of the dirt would mix with the fresh kill, making their scents hard to track. If we left them piled, we could leave a single apprentice here to watch them as we added more to the pile."

"We don't have anyone to spare," Hawkstar mewed curtly. "Or have you forgotten how many of our warriors are incapacitated right now?"

"And what's hard for us is harder still for the other animals around," Hawkstar added. "You'll have to be a brain-dead vole not to smell out this fresh-kill a lake-length away. But the scavengers that roam around won't have as easy a time."

"I hope to change that," Hawkstar said wearily, looking at the other two apprentices. "It's imperative that everyone learns the skills they need to help the clan in a time like this."
