Sprite makin'

So I've been wanting to make sprites, stuff that looks like this.

I know MS Paint has a pixel grid, and if I zoom in I can make sprites, but is this suggested if I want to use these sprites in a game? Or should I work with other programs? If so suggest me some.

I'd also like some tips on sprite making itself, how to make them look appealing.

Bro. Bro bro bro bro bro bro broooooo.... bro. MS Paint will work just fine for sprites. Heck, I can do a nice non-sprite picture with Paint.

Ah okay, however what file type is commonly used in pixelated game sprites nowadays, that's something else I'm curious about.

That I don't know about. I suggest Google. ;)

I think if I mess around with the brushes in Photoshop I can use that as a sprite making tool.

Okay, I got sprite making done and complete, but I need help with onnnnnne more thing.

How do I make the sprite animated using Photoshop?

Well, I started with MS Paint as well, but then I was suggested Grafx2, which I think is far superior to every other pixel-pushing piece of software out there. Yes, you can make a lot with just MS Paint -- for example, my avatar -- but Grafx2 is superior in features, free, open source, totally delectable. Don't feel like doing copy pasta on why you should you use, so here's a review I wrote of it, saying why you should use it and a link to the Google Code download: http://cemetech.net/...opic.php?t=7968

A few things to start. If you're going to post pixel art online, don't do it as a BMP/DIB/JPEG, the former two are huge in size (since they're just raw image data essentially) and the latter is small in size but ruins the quality (it has lossy compression.) PNG and GIF are the two picks. GIFs can only display 256 unique colors, but with pixel art it's rare you'll even get near that number (and if you do, you probably have a palette that's magnitudes larger than it should be), but they can also handle animations. PNGs support 2^32 colors (if you consider the alpha channels) but no animations.

As for how you can improve and make "nice looking sprites", most of what you need to do is examine other people's sprites, and practice making your own. Drawing out concepts with pencil+paper helps. Also, finding a pixel art forums site online and posting your work there for C+C will teach you a lot.

And finally, quick C+C on what you posted. The lineart is fine, looks pretty similar to that found in the show. There's no real shading at all, adding some of that will give dimension and polish. The dithering you used simply detracts from the quality, as it both adds another color (that you don't use anywhere else afterwards) and it serves no purpose. Dithering is usually done to smooth the edges between different colored pixel clusters, not as a fill pattern.

I'm not sure how to animate things in Photoshop myself.

But if you're planning to use these sprites in a game just make a separate image for each frame of the animation.

Or arrange all the frames in a spritesheet.

That's how sprites are usually handled in games, as it gives better control over the animation since the programming handles it.

I'd like to thank the MLP Vector Club for the images used in my avatar.

Known as "Princess Mi Amore Cadenza", "Trixie the Great", "Tom" and "Tomzoid the EggDroid".

Animating in Photoshop isn't that hard, well in my opinion at least.

This is the little window you use for animating (I use Adobe Photoshop CS2) to show it you click "Window >> Animation"

Show the picture you want (showing the layers and such) in the first frame, click on the paper at the bottom of the window and select the new frame, change the picture with layers and you have an animation started!

Some more fancy things can be done using photoshop, but that is at least the basic. Some easy use of google will most likely help you more ^^

It seems to effect both frames rather than the one I selected.

You should make a group of layers for each frame, then hide all unneeded groups in selected frame. It's kinda annoying, I prefeer flash for animation

As for the trixie sprite, I spent 3 hours making you a Final Fantasy 6 quality edit, but I saved it at the desktop computer at my work... so the earliest I can post it is Tuesday (and I don't want to redo it again)

As for pony walk cycles... what could be a better reference than splitting down walking ponies in the show itself? :) I suggest you do just that.

Ooooh boy I can't wait to see it, I'll observe and take note of it's pallet and shading.

I'm not too good at correct shading in general, but maybe I can learn from your edits.

Not my best edit ever, but... I think you'll still learn from it. Lost my other edit on the work computer, they actually migrated the data somewhere else and replaced the physical computer :P So here's the edit I came up with in the past hour. Not as good as the other one I had (it's smaller) but again, you'll learn something.

I have to catch my bus to get home from work now, but I'll give you 5-6 paragraphs of explaination of my edit when I get home.
