Go right ahead. I still believe that being free to discuss things instead of having it shut down (because criticism and questioning things equals intolerance, clearly) is necessary. With no discussion on what is or isn't harmful and why, actual problems grow unchecked because people aren't in the habit of thinking about it and are scared to be shut down by everyone else - things much bigger than porn, too.

 

But there is a difference between questioning something, and just outright saying "eww gross, no me gusta kill it with fire!" I am all open to hearing an argument, and you are entitled to your opinion, but my point is no matter what your opinion is you should respect other people's choices.

Say why it causes problems, what is the actual problem, don't give ambigious reasons like "oh its soo gross, or its just plain wrong" Those aren't arguments, and they definitely are not reasons to discuss anything at length if you plan on it being intelligent. It will just boil down to the side being accused of being in the wrong giving their reasons, then the other side continuously pointing out that it is wrong but not giving an actual reason why it is wrong (like we saw in this thread to an extent).

I came into this late, already going, with people on both sides already resorting to less than reason in some respects. The best course of action would have been to explain it, but I have a feeling that regardless of how much explaining would have been done (which there was a good amount of explaining, I attempted to do so in my post somewhat) OP had already decided they were not going to deal with it at all.

 

It is just a hunch, and I may be wrong, but I think OP had decided right from post one how they felt and didn't plan on changing their opinion.

 

Also, I don't feel there was only an outcry to silence OP, I saw many posts attempting to explain the subject to OP and give legitimate reasons why people partake in rule 34 activities and the like. Yes there was indeed an outrcy to silence OP, but when such controversial topics are under the microscope people tend to get that way. They fear for their side, and they would rather see the opposition silenced than risk actual confrontation and a possible breaking down of their logical defenses.

 

Verdict: Both sides are guilty to an extent, and this thread is reaching its possible ending point, especially with OP now claiming to be gone.

You can't type just about anything on image searches without something (at least one thing) R34 coming up in some manner, it just happens. It isn't just ponies, its everything.

I mean, here we have people getting huffy because someone expressed that they don't like clopping and did not express it well, meanwhile in Life Advice someone confesses a very strange and very personal problem that's most likely causing them some pretty serious hardships and people fill up the thread with jokes on the subject, so -

 

What's this? The only one telling them to knock it off is staff, who are presumably the ones who deleted all the bear/cat jokes that used to be there? Where's the "love and tolerate" chorus? Better yet, where's the "don't derail an advice thread with jokes just because you find the problem strange or funny" chorus? The priorities seem pretty messed up.

I did indeed post a large quotation from an earlier thread with a similar subject attempting to help explain to OP why R34 and the like occurs. I tried to make sure that I never stated they could not dislike it, but if perhaps I did that is a failure on my part.

 

For that last part you posted about the mantra and ideals, I would like to let my favorite villain The Joker speak. This is from a conversation he was having with Batman in the Dark Knight movie, and he mentions a certain trait about people that I find to be true quite often (the part I am concerned with is from the 35 second mark to the 1:03 mark, but the clip as a whole works as well):

Essentially people are quite capable of preaching their ideals, and even following them, when it works in their favor. When it is easy for them to do, when there is no loss involved, the machine runs smooth as can be. It all works out, and they have no qualms about it. Everypony's happy. But then, introduce possible negative outcomes, prejudices, etc. and whamo! Suddenly that supposedly unbreakable idea can be broken, changed, molded to fit this new situation. The people who once praised something can turn on that ideal in the name of the ideal itself, it is both amazing and horrifying to watch happen.

I would just ignore it There's dark sides of every fandom, and unfortunately that's the part of the fandom that get amplified by others in our case.

Honestly, you could say the same thing with every fanbase ever. Every fanbase has it's good side and it's bad side. It just the bad side-who made a complete asses of themselves-seem to get the most notoriety.

Word of advice: Just continue to love ponies and ignore the bad eggs.

I've read through a few rants against the fandom for taking the ponies into dark and/or saucy places. Never bought it personally. Being respectful and decent means you might have to keep that stuff quiet in polite company, but nopony should get too worked up just because you like it.
