Way to indicate posts that came from merged thread?

Would there be a way to indicate or mark certain posts that came from a merged thread?

Reason I ask is because there was confusion when a recent thread was merged with a previously existing and prevailing thread and the comments from the merged thread did not match the tone, context, or topic of the prevailing thread. That resulted in a lot of confusion for the prevailing topic creator, a lot of deleted posts, and a lot of red on the screen.

Thread where this came up http://mlpforums.com...340#entry524154

Would there be a way to remedy this or is this a non-issue?

There's no way to indicate that posts came from a merged thread. What happens during a merge is that all posts from the child thread are moved into the parent thread, the child thread is destroyed, and all posts in the parent thread (now including the new ones) are re-ordered by post ID (so, in chronological order).

It may result in some initial confusion, but merged threads are usually similar enough that posts in each mesh together closely enough for it to be non-issue.

On a side note, if you do encounter multiple posts saying "there's already a thread for this", report one of them and we'll be there to clean it up, as otherwise it devolves into off-topic (essentially spam) arguments, as seen on that thread in which you've linked.

The best we can do is make a post once the threads have been merged. It's certainly not as clean as some sort of default indicator, but it normally does the trick.

So does that mean that there'd be two posts marked "#1" or that it's ordered by date and time it was posted?

(never been in merged thread)

They're just ordered by post date/time. The numbers you see on a post are not the post ID - they're generated on the fly to show how far along into a thread a post is. To see a post's actual ID number, look closely at the URL that the #1 or whatever is linked to; the part after the hash in the URL is the ID number.

524244. You'll never see "#entry" in a number, and the post ID is a number. ^_^

Posts on the site get an ID number in the order that they are made. So that post was the 524244th time someone clicked the "Post" button. I just pointed out that this number is what IP.Board uses to decide how to order posts in a topic.

Okay thanks! I am no longer confused about one of the many subjects that circle around in my mind!

Can't a moderator leave a note on the first post of what is being moved and additionally leave the usual message at the end informing people that it was moved.
