I found this silly. But in the end all of those encounters in the first place were just to prove a point.

 

This, it was pretty much meant to all be a test of character. Five bucks says Celestia could have saved them all and stopped Nightmare Moon in about 5 minutes, she was just seeing if they could handle it on their own.

In any case, I'd say it was for the best, it would kinda ruin AJ's spotlight and relevance in the show if she didn't show her honesty like that.

Personally, I don't think Applejack was sure the pegasi would catch her, but there WERE step-like things on the mountain leading down to the bottom. It was possible Applejack just new should would land on those, and the pegasi catching her was just a coincidence.
