gaming PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

The game looks like a decent-enough mashup effort, but my main concern is probably the gameplay. Nintendo couldn't go wrong with Super Smash Bros. because all the characters included in the series come from games with cartoonish or over-the-top outrageousness, which made it easy for tthem to mesh together in a fighting mechanic that seemed to compliment them well. Playstation All-Stars is another story. You've got characters from gritty worlds and realistic action backgrounds, like Kratos, Heihachi, Cole and Nathan Drake, and then you've got the cartoonish characters that don't seem too suited to realism, like PaRappa, Toro, Kuro and Fat Princess. It just makes me wonder whether or not this combination will be able to play out smoothly in a fighting mechanic that doesn't look....forced.

It worked well enough for Snake and when you consider the fact that Link has always been in a realistic, though fantasy-based, world it can still easily work. They even brought Captain Falcon out of his machine to fight.

I've heard these concerns before though and it's easier to bring dark and gritty to cartoonish than the other way around. Can you imagine Sly Cooper turning into some sort of assassin in a Mortal Kombat type of game and clipping an enemy's head off to finish him and steal his money out of his pocket?

It's easier to imagine serious as cartoony (Look at VG Cats and the like) than the other way around. Take out the blood, maybe slightly change designs and you have yourself a cartoony character.

True, it's easier to tone down a hard-edged game like God of War, but from the looks of the game, not much of Kratos' actual character is toned down. The realistic characters seem to have only been changed in the way of the effect they have. There's not much change in the characters themselves, but their actions have been "modified" so they seem like shallow parodies of their former selves. No editing was really necessary for the more cartoony characters, so the changes to the serious characters makes them stand out in an awkward way.

Does anypony agree that the glow that appears when somepony has a super is also weird and seems out of place?

Agreed. It's a little awkward-looking, but I guess it's convenient, as opposed to some other way of notifying somepony when a character has a super. Not really the most fitting way, but I can think of a few worse ones. Edited by Fire_Fly

It's honestly hard to do a mash-up in general and not look at least a little awkward. You're talking about mixing artstyles, character worlds and personalities that are all so completely different it's ridiculous. It'll be hard not to look at least a little awkward. It helps putting them all in the same artstyle though like Smash Bros did though.

If you put two people from two totally different dimensions in the same room it would look just as awkward, can't help that really considering they came from two totally different base structures. You can't mix light with water and make cream. :P

Do I think it's a rip-off game? Maybe, but it's a little too early to tell.

Do I really care? No, as long as it's fun!

Tell me something that is diffrent... Anything. And don't even dare to mention the classic character ''Fat Princess''.

What i meant with cheap rip-off is that is going to be a bad game. And i agree, aslong as it is fun, but i find it hard to belive that its going to be fun. And i can' judge the gameplay since i haven't played it. But i can judge the looks and its content.

How about the way you kill opponents? There is no "falling to one's death" as far as we know. Or maybe the fact that the levels are all mash ups of 2 different games. Or perhaps the fact that there are 4 buttons to attack with rather than just two, with combos.

Again, they've shown us so little that I think it's WAYYY too early to tell whether it'll be fun. I'm a skeptic myself, but I've been wrong before (ie: MLP is amazing, which I absolutely did not expect).

Levels or buttons really got nothing to do with the game.

I've heard about the death system before, and i'm not even sure how to kill an opponent.

What sets me off the most is the lack of characters. I've seen them all but from those i've seen Big Daddy,Kratos and Sly is the only characters who seems legit to me. Most characters i've never ever heard of before or are normal human beings without any special powers, and since they don't have any special power i don't see them to fit in a game like this.

And i'm sure they got more characters to reveal.

Like kotakotakota said, some characters hail from franchises known for straying away from Nintendo's known casual theme, and said franchises at times contain pure action, intensity, and at times graphic, scary, or disturbing moments, such as the Zelda games. So, all-around, I'd say Nintendo hasn't been a casual video game company since they started making the kind of games that wouldn't be suitable for the youngest audience. But that's what my opinion is.

The way they enhance the characters’ appearances (such as detailing Mario's overalls, and adding a few realistic shades to the simplistic and primitive Kirby) is amazing, in my opinion, is amazing, becuase not only do all the characters fit together in all f their individual realistic appearances, it makes the games eye candy just to look at (though this started with the series’ second installment, “Melee”, for the GameCube, because of the lack of ability to make such textures and detail with the Nintendo 64).

All-Star's current roster is mostly filled up of characters from modern day games with already next-gen appearances in-game, except 2. Fat Princess and PaRappa both come from games that use a cel-shaded graphics engine, so shadows are sacrificed for color and expression for a more cartoony look. Being known for producing games in general with good graphics, Sony did the same thing as Smash Bros. (this being actually a good thing), by adding realstic textures, shading, etc. to the two characters to make them fit in with the general theme of graphics in the game. PaRappa admittedly was probably hard to do, because in the games, he was literally a flat, 2-dimensional character.

Though I'm not 100% sure that's what you're bringing up, I'd just thought that was notable to point out.

The game is still continuously adding more characters to the roster, so don't get all down about the lack of a bug amount of them. There are still more definite's to come, especially Crash and Spyro. The fans (including me) want them both in very badly, and I don't see why they won't ask Activision to let them use them in this game.

And what classifies to you as a “legit” charcater? Their point of this game was to appeal to Sony fans, mostly long-time or all-around Sony fans, their characters all coming from very-successful, well-known franchises. It was, not copied from, but also the goal of Smash Bros., to combine every single aspect that's best of the company's history (crossover of all the conpany's best franchises) in the most epic and fun way possible (a fighting genre game). And also, like Smash Bros., or any other fighting game out there, their moves will be influenced via references to characters’ individual recurring items, moves, etc. in their games.

I personally think that the levels and controls have A LOT to do with this game. Those two are absolutely critical in Smash, and I suspect they will be parts that actually help make this game different. Anyone can pick up Smash really easily. Why? If somepony doesn't know what they are doing, all they need to know is to hit the 'B' button while pointing in a direction of their choosing. A more experienced player will use the 'A' button, dodging, rolling, shielding, tekking, and some other techniques. Both players can enjoy the game though, because of the platforming nature of the levels, and because the controls allow for different levels of sophistication. The same cannot be said for the vast majority of fighting games. The thing that does make All-Stars different is that it tries to combine the platforming nature of Smash with the controls of a traditional fighter.

As for characters, I think so far, they've been doing great. Jak and Daxter played a major role during the days of the PS2, and Nathan Drake is the protagonist in the biggest action franchise on the PS3. I have to admit, Fat Princess was a bit of a surprise, but perhaps they were trying to help get more ponies exposed to the game (which is actually very fun.) Sweet Tooth is also no surprise because Twisted Metal is a huge part of the PS3 culture. Remember though, they have to spread out the "big" character announcements to help keep up the hype. I'm still hoping for Ape Escape and Gran Turismo ;)

Exactly, the gamely might be similar and some ways, but two very important aspects, the controls and how you KO oppopents, are very different. Thanks for hopefully clearing that up. :3

And yes, it's true, they are doing their best to diversify characters they put on the list based on appearance, game genre, game time period (PaRappa was a surprise, is his first game was in the late 90's, his second and last game was in 2001-ish.), and personalities. I think you don't even have to be a PlayStation fanboy to know all these characters.

I'll see what kind of characters i know and seems like a good character in a game like this.

Big Daddy - An OK character to have in a game like this, Also third party.

Cole - Some new Sony character wish i know nothing about. So i can't really say anything about him.

Colonel - I don't see him as a fitting character because he don't have any special powers, hes just a fighting soldier. [Correct me if i'm wrong]

Fat Princess - I don't have any comments on this one, thats how bad it is.

Tekken Guy - No, just no.

Jax,Dexter - Okay, i like this one. best so far.

Kratos - Sonys own little star. No problem here.

Drake - Meeh, a normal human being agaings an ex-god?

PaRappa - Seems okay, nothing to shut about tho.

Sly - YES!

Sweet Tooth - Sweet

Toro - NO!

Pretty much sums it up so far.

In response to your comment about Nathan Drake vs Kratos... Mewtwo vs Princess Peach? That doesn't sound even remotely fair. The idea is to combine different characters of different abilities and skills into one game. Obviously, the matchups don't have to or even shouldn't sound reasonable. What's important is the breadth of play styles.

I know that, but Peach is meant to be a humours character, unlike Drake.

Lets just say that we will know how the game is in the end. Right now we hardly have anything to go on.

I think the game will have potential if they manage to pull in some big name characters. For now, all but a few of the characters don't do anything for me. I think it's mainly because I don't have much history with the Sony brand besides Crash and Spyro (When they were on the PS1).

For me I would instantly buy the game if they put any of these 3 characters in.

How likely do you think it would be that they would put Selvaria instead of Welkin if they did have a VC character though? Selvaria would translate better into the game but Welkin is the main character. (Haven't played the other two so I dunno anything about their stories or what characters are in them)

Like I said before though: Those who are accusing this of a rip-off should know that people have wanted this very thing for a very long time. I remember 3-4 years ago it was a thing to want a Sony version of SSB and now we're getting it and all it gets is accusations of being a rip-off.

We got some awesome aerial combos going on here.

THEY BROUGHT IN MORE OF HEIHACHI'S TEKKEN COMBOS!!!

Nate's combos and attacks look really slow and simple, compared to other characters. Even the Big Daddy seems more light on his feet. I'm guessing Nate compensates with mobility or something damage-related.

Sly's moves are JUST how I envisioned them; sleek, quick, and stylish! :D

Fun fact: Sony want Mario in their game.

I think it would be awesome if Sony and Nintendo collaborated and made a "Sony vs Nintendo" or "Nintendo vs Sony" (name dependent on which platform it's on). It would be like Smash but also like All-Stars Battle Royale (how in the world would they make it similar to both? the games are SO different!! **gasps**), and would feature characters from both Nintendo and Sony. The campaign would differ depending on the platform: if you're on a Nintendo platform, it shows the Sony characters jumping into the Nintendo platform, and you have to "defend your platform". Same deal but the other way around if you're on a Sony platform. I don't know about you, but I think it's pure genius :P

I have to agree with this.

I was acculy thinking the same thing, i would love to see Sly and Dex in a SSB game.

But well, from what i know Sony and Nintendo don't have a good relationship so i don't think this will ever happen.

Being that they're both first party (All-Stars is a game by Sony, Mario is a character created and owned by Nintendo), I do not see any way of that happening......but all I can say is...

WTF, Sony. No, not in a “you're always coming up with the most idiotic ideas” way, more of a “how in the buck did you get that crazy idea?!” way. I never would've thought they would ask something like that. Honestly, I can't wait to see what Nintendo says to this. I'm almost 100% it will be a big nay, but regardless, it's interesting to see Sony actually trying.

Every time I hear a piece of new news about this game I get more disappointed lol... So now they're basically adding in street fighter type combos and they copied the ability in super smash bros to evade to the left and right but without the shield...

The problem is they're changing stuff (probably because they have to in order to not be sued) or to make it just seem different from smash bros, and everything about the game is second rate as a result. It just doesn't come off as a coherent game at all, it seems so forced.
