Like there's Applejack and Big Macintosh but they're referred to collectively as the Apple Family. Do we assume their full names are Applejack Apple and Macintosh Apple? Or is it the Belle family and her full name is Rarity Belle while her sister is Sweetie Belle? That's why I don't think there's really any last names. Since it's your fanfic, you do what you want to do. You're the creator and don't let some uppity, meticulous reader slam you for giving the characters a last name. Also, it could be that compressed names are made up of shorter words. Twilightsparkle sounds a little long compared to Fluttershy. Random question is random: Fluttershy's last name is Shy? Some do have established last names like the Cake family and others are more implied like with the Apple family all having names related to apples. For the longest time it was thought that Twilight's family name was Sparkle, and even with the introduction of Shining Armor I've seen some still sticking with that. Even Pinkie's family has become known as the Pie family within the fandom, all having "pie" in their names. Basically, names in the show don't normally follow the same rules as in real life . They may infact be more akin to clan names, signifying who belongs to what family without a title similar to a last name. It happens in other franchises, too, like in one of Sonic timelines, the hedgehog's real name is actually Ogilvie Maurice, and he goes with Sonic, seeming to be ashamed of his real name. I created novelty drivers licenses for MLP characters and I made her full name Jackie Susan Apple on the license, so we're kinda similar in approach.
