gaming Which underrated games have you played?

That's exactly how it's supposed to play. It's a Roguelike RPG, they are made specifically to play that way. :P

Roguelikes, if you don't know already, are games based on the cult-classic game Rogue which used that system first where you travel through randomly generated dungeons as far as you can go, making sure your stamina meter stays as high possible and fighting enemies and if you die or lose all your stamina then lose all your health (Which gradually goes down if your character is hungry/has no stamina) then you start over from the beginning. At least Baroque connects the multiple playthroughs of the Neuro Tower through story. The original Rogue just started the game over entirely with no connection to the last playthrough, Fatal Labyrinth for the Sega Genesis is also a Roguelike and can be found on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3, 360 and PC.

It's a unique genre and it's made to play that way so it's not like it's unbalanced or broken.

Yeah, but each play through makes it feel like you accomplished absolutely nothing at all. It's definitely not a game genre for me. I prefer actual spelunking inside of dark caves in a more adventurous way, or at least in a nice RPG element. Something that doesn't make me feel depressed after hours on end travel to starting at square one entirely.

Practice makes perfect; but if nobody's perfect, why practice?

The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games are also Roguelikes so if you've played those then you've played another Roguelike. I wouldn't say it's easy to die in Baroque, it's really an easy game as long as you pay attention to your health and constantly upgrade your health and vitality when they are full. (Healing items will give you more health if you use them with a full meter.) so it's not like you have to go through with 100HP and 100VT or whatever it was you started with.

Those are all great games. trust me psychonauts will be well worth whatever money you gave. (If its $1 then you can count on it.)

I.....what?! Why would I do that to the people supplying this awesome pack? I paid what little I could in full out of the rest of my earnings, at least 15 healthy dollars. It still felt a little low on all the quality games that came with it ALONG with music. I dunno, but paying only one dollar hurts the people supplying those games a great deal.

It's actually not entirely at square one. There are ways to transfer items/weapons to yourself when you start over and on top of that doing certain things within the Neuro Tower advances the story. Giving certain items to specific characters, getting to the bottom and shooting the Absolute God or walking up to her will also make a difference as well. The game is tedious for sure though. I still haven't beaten the game and I've played through the Neuro Tower at least 5 times.

Yeah, but when you go down time after time; with or without new weapons it just feels like you are accomplishing absolutely nothing. I'm not trying to diss this particular brand of genre, but Baroque sort of broke the rogue like games from me. I will not try another because of this one game. I'm sorta stuck though on tactic games for the moment.

I will fully admit that Roguelikes in general are a very niche genre. It takes a certain kind of person to really get into them because of their tedium. I would, however, recommend you try at least one other roguelike before you write off the genre entirely. Fatal Labyrinth, maybe, since it's only 30 levels long but dying even once starts you over completely. You could do the Mystery Dungeon games since they are easier in general.

There's also the Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Dungeon game and Shiren the Wanderer as well.

I'm one of the few people who actually likes Chrono Cross more than Chrono Trigger. It not only stands on it's own as a great game but it also compliments CT's story which adds to it. CC by itself would be equal to CT but the fact that it adds to the existing lore of CT is what shoots it above CT for me.

Quite a few of the game I've really enjoyed tend to be underrated or ignored by most gamers,

-Timesplitters 2 and 3

-Second Sight

-Beyond Good and Evil

-Machinarium

-Advance Wars series

Timesplitters 3 is the only one I've played (though I wanna play the others) but I really love it. I love the secret agent guy. xD

My favorite level is probably the zombie level though. Just seems like the most original even if the concept itself is oldschool and reused a lot. lol

As for BG&E I love that game too and I'm glad they put it on PSN. I'd always heard how great the game was but never knew it existed until a few years ago when I got the internet. Definitely a unique game.

Personally I don't care for most RPG soundtracks outside of their battle themes and as far as battle themes go I like CT better but CC has one particular battle theme that I really like. The one where you are fighting

Miguel

which is a really emotional fight thanks to that song.

Any games recommendable for PS3 or PSP in specific? I got rid of my DS a long time ago and don't own a Wii or 360. PS2/PSX also work here.

The only roguelike on the PS3 is via Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection which is the previously mentioned Fatal Labyrinth. It's not a genre that gets made a lot so if you are looking for PS2 or PS3 Fatal Labyrinth and Baroque are your only options as far as I know.

Definitely go for Timesplitters 2, it is a truly fantastic game and I actually prefer it to the third because of its more old-school style which borrows some from Goldeneye; the third departs from Free Radical's usual style much more than the second. The second, I would argue, also has better multiplayer....and if you can't tell I'm a huge fanboy of Timesplitters in general!

Although, Rogue is such an old game you could probably play it on your PC even if it's a really old and crappy one and it's totally free last I checked. Rogue is about as oldschool as you can get though so if you have trouble with games that have outdated mechanics Rogue might be tough.

I uh, sorta meant in the Rogue like genre since I rarely play it. Baroque left a bad taste of the game type. As for monster hunter, I would prefer not playing the "claw hand" game with my psp and will wait for a PS Vita release. VC though sound like fun games, I would also prefer those on a portable over a PS3 release.

Maybe I'll check it out on the PC when I get the chance. I still haven't been able to get around my Humble Indie Bundle as of yet though since I've been studying animation and drawing as of right now.

I tried getting that for my Vita but it's not available as of right now....bunch of jerks. I heard good things from it and really wanted to get that game. Too bad, guess I'm stuck on the Disgaea games for now.

It's possibly the greatest tactics game ever made. It's extremely in depth in what you do with an enormous amount of content put into it. The story line is very strange in deed, but it's not to be taken seriously at all. The first is still a favorite of mine, prefer that one over all the other ones. Would like to see it done in full 3D someday though. Might look up Agarest War someday. If you like VC, you may like Enchanted Arms.

I've yet to play a Disgaea game. I want to for sure but being jobless makes it hard to get games in general.

Get the first one. It's by far the best one in the entire series. yeah, the other ones have cool add-ons and new ways to play but the original had the best story overall and it wasn't overly complicated like the others are. It's already pretty darn intimidating when you see people going to level 9999 and restarting back to 1 to get a stronger level 9999....

Level...9999? That's crazy. LOL

I've heard of games going higher than 99, Star Ocean goes to 250 and Phantasy Star Online goes to 200 for example, but I've never heard of 9999. xD

You think THAT'S nuts?! Every single item, in the game can be leveled up to level 100 and can be stat stacked from other leveled items......how insane is THAT for you?!

Seriously crazy fun online against other peoples too.
