Reuel(Crystal Slave) 287 August 30, 2012 Share August 30, 2012 Okay, I will say this: drawing isn't my forte. Music is. In fact, before this I hadn't drawn anything in a couple years, for the most part. But I decided, after seeing some jaw-droppingly amazing art on Equestria Daily, that I had to try. The following is the result of my work... I started out with a small sketch, scanned it, traced it with Gimp, then added color, shading, and modified some parts. Please give me tips on how to get better! Thanks! 4 My Music Channel
Bohtty 1,775 August 30, 2012 Share August 30, 2012 (edited) Please give me tips on how to get better! Thanks! Did you use a tablet or a mouse? Start with cell shading before moving onto smooth shading. It's a more simplified way to shade and it's kinda like crawling before walking... not that everyone crawls before they walk. Never use black. Use off shades of black like dark brown, dark purple or dark blue. Don't use white overlays to represent spots of light, it looks unnatural. When lights overlap each other they create different colors not to mention that there are many different colors of light. If you haven't already I would recommend using guidelines (the circles and lines before you actually draw anything.) It's hard to suggest you some further practice without knowing where you want to be in the future in terms of art style. There is one thing I can say though, if you have passion or inspiration to draw then do it. Don't let what you think you are capable of doing hold you back. Everyone was a novice at one point and they only got better through practice and instruction. Natural talent is a myth :] Edited August 30, 2012 by Bohtty 1 Legit signature made by Shift. Psych Ward 377 August 30, 2012 Share August 30, 2012 It looks like a pony. Good job! That is the first step. Making sure that what you draw, looks like what it is supposed to be. 2 AlleyKat666 on deviantART <--- That's me! http://mlpforums.com/topic/69466-psych-wards-commissions-hats-necklaces-and-bracelets-oh-my/ <--- Commissions! Gatekeeper Babylon 116 August 30, 2012 Share August 30, 2012 Well... it looks like a pony. I'm just kidding. Well done for a first time drawer. Pretty nice. Like Bohtty said, start with cell shading, don't use black... etc, etc, etc. If you want to fly, jump at the ground and miss. -Zaphod Have no idea where to put your soul after a tragic demise? Come talk to Babylon! We'll care for your soul (with some possibilities not limited to burning scalding impalement soul destruction unnecessary hiccuping etc.)! Your soul will rest next to a beautiful countryside (IF A SCALDING BURNING WASTELAND IS NOT COMFORTABLE THE COUNTRY SIDE ISN'T BEUATIFUL)! Enjoy your afterlife (Ok that part's just a lie we tell to hook customers) ! Dusty Soul 2,611 September 1, 2012 Share September 1, 2012 It looks pretty good actually... The lines are really un-straight, but that can be fixed with some more practice. Honestly, it looks ok. Pix3M 607 September 1, 2012 Share September 1, 2012 (edited) Don't let what you think you are capable of doing hold you back. I can probably speak from experience. That tree avatar I drew on a pixelling program... Those are probably the first tree tiles I have ever made, and probably the second tree I've ever spent serious effort on. Trying something a little different every time.... I find that it gets you places Edited September 1, 2012 by Pix3M 1 My deviantArt page
XUNUSEDXXX 3,459 September 1, 2012 Share September 1, 2012 I like this. It's really defined and when I first laid eyes on it I thought it was very well done. The only thing that majorly bugs me is the head placement when looking at the neck.
