On News and Reports

Why can't we submit our own news? Wouldn't that tie together our community? Why only equestria daily?

There are a lot of things that could be posted there that get overseen, like a new song from a good artist, a great picture, things like that.

Now another thing that I believe needs to be discussed:

The incoherence of the rules with the features on site:

Once you look part the hostile parts of the wording and the fact it takes more than 10 seconds one can imagine why that rule exist:

  • You cannot do anything about it. Bitching will not help.
  • Chances are you are making a wrong call and should stop being offended.

Those are all great reasons! Especially the second one so I am convinced when I report the moderator will know what is wrong and I don't need to tell th-

What? Why do you need a form to report something? What are you supposed to post in there? Things like:

That person said the truth and I am offended! Remove it please and ban him so he stops talking about what I do in my private time!

Damn that is certainly not biased and completely rational! I am sure the moderator will be offended as well and ban the other member because I told him so. Or will he? Why should a moderator take the information from THE DUDE WHO IS REPORTING HIM?

I myself had to resort using it only once, reporting one particular user several times, each time giving enough info for them to be banned by the rules but I didn't had to: the form says it

The moderators will be made aware of the link to the page you are reporting.

Why do you need a form then?

The reporting form is there for you to summarize what your reporting them for. Like for example if their posting in the wrong section you write that they are posting in the wrong section.

So you are Backseat modding? Because that is exactly my point. Why should I take my time to write something if it is obvious to begin with and has chances to be ignored? I just want it to be a button you can press and be done with it.

So you can make yourself feel good and justified by reporting a criminal of the internet and an enemy of the forums. I believe that's what the form is for. In a sense, the form itself is backseat moderation.

I do agree with you on this one, Neikos.

And i really dont like the way they are presenting the rule. Its cocky and it gives bad vibes.

But i guess typing in a reason makes their jobes a lot easier.

it's not backseat modding. Backseat modding is acting like a Mod. Reporting a person or a thread with a form is extremely common, and is used on just about any forum site you can find. The reason the form is there is to make their job easier... Edited by Dusty Soul

Honestly, I've always thought that the rule sounds more like it was written by someone that was exasperated and tired of having to deal with backseat moderation, rather than someone that was hostile and cocky; that's just me, though. At any rate, any potential rewriting of rules and such would be Feld0's issue to tackle.

What? Why do you need a form to report something?

Because that is how IPS decided to design the reporting system. There is not a whole lot we can do about this on our own, unless someone comes along that wishes to extend what I no doubt believe would be a very significant amount of effort for the sake of changing the behavior of the reporting system.

Somehow I do not expect that to happen.

Furthermore...

While reports on posts might be straight forward enough that they don't need much text, reports on user profiles are a little different. If you report a user without providing any information on what exactly it is that you're actually reporting, we're not going to know where we're supposed to look for whatever behavior it was that caused you to report them.

Did they...

• Make offensive status updates?

• Make offensive status comments?

• Make offensive statements/etc in the Skype group?

• Make offensive statements/etc in the Minecraft server?

• Make offensive statements/etc in the Team Fortress 2 server?

When reporting a user's profile, we're going to need a bit of information considering the generic nature of a profile report.

I have to agree with you on reporting a profile. ( Even if a PM would work aswell )

But I chose that because it was the fastest way to get to a screenshot of the form. I believe my point still stands for the forum posts. ( Which it was intended for. )

Those report button presets people talked about and all thought were a great idea a while back certainly would be helpful. Being able to just press report, then click one or more of 'Spam', 'Backseat Modding', etc., and only entering a custom message if necessary or desired.

Yeah I suggested them but I got no decisive answer afaik... I will just add it to my extension soon once I got frustrated enough.

Nice, that's looking great thus far. Simple, effective, easy to use. Tell the boys and chicken down in the lab that we appreciate the modifications and all their work, as well as all your work.

Awesome! Thanks for taking it into consideration! This is by far a better way to report something offensive as you don't feel like the guilty one.
