Ghosted 18 October 31, 2012 Share October 31, 2012 Which has had a larger impact on society? Basically, I was talking with my friend and he compared Gandalf's immortal quote of "Fly you fools" with Mewtwo's quote about the creation of Pokemon. Is this a fair comparison? "First, Lord of the Rings is a well-written novel by J.R.Tolkein that has lived to become a classic novel. It has earned it's respect in many countries throughout the world as an amazing piece of art. Pokemon on the other hand is a game that became a TV show targeting an audience age average of 10-12. Pokemon offers no use of imagination that Lord of the Rings does. Second immense fan bases do not mean as much as you are giving them credit for. Anything from "I support cancer" to "Robot Unicorn Attack" can have "immense" fanbases. Heck, charlie bit my finger has the most views on youtube and it has no sort of sophistication at all." Here is my argument by the way.
Nohbdy 4,108 October 31, 2012 Share October 31, 2012 LotR, hands down. Pokemon is more popular nowadays, but Lord of the Rings created modern fantasy. George Lucas and Jk Rowling cite LotR as major influences on their respective universes. You know how much Star Wars and Harry Potter have impacted society. The music and film industries have seen some major LotR action, as well. The images we have of fantasy are largely derived from Lord of the Rings, which is why many modern fantasy stories are so similar. Even though I like Pokemon, and it's been an important part of my childhood, I think Lord of the Rings has been more important overall. Pokemon's popular, but I don't see how it can affect society in any way.
null1 606 October 31, 2012 Share October 31, 2012 I was raised with Pokemon first, then only recently did I delve into the epicness that is LoTR. Both to me have an equal impact. LoTR influencing other awesome things, such as the Elder Scrolls. Pokemon helped open up Japanese culture to me, including the world of Nintendo and games in general. I have to say Pokemon for me because I've known it longer, but LoTR is making a stronger impact on my modern day life.

Pretty much every fantasy that has elves, dwarves, rocs, trolls and humans are based on LOTR.Modern fantasy games are all based on settings that are influenced by LOTR. I would probably go with LOTR because of warhammer and warcraft.
Batbrony 16,055 October 31, 2012 Share October 31, 2012 (edited) Lord of the Rings hands down has had a greater and, ultimately, more lasting impact. While you could argue that Pokemon might have had as much of an influence on the entertainment industry (particularly concerning the distribution of anime in the U.S.) as the LoTR's movies did, as far as the timelessness and cultural relevance of the themes, stories, and characters of each, LoTR undoubtedly blows Pokemon out of the water!!!!!!!!!! 100 years from now people will still be passionately discussing the themes of Tolkien's classic works, while I can't say with any certainty that anypony aside from perhaps a small subset of fans and collectors will really be discussing Pokemon that much. I'm honestly surprised that anypony made the comparison between those two; though to be fair, I never watched Pokemon myself, so I can't say that it had really any bit of an impact on my life. Starshine 16,334 October 31, 2012 Share October 31, 2012 (edited) LoTR inspired a whole new genre. Everything fantasy can be said inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien. While some of the creatures exist before his works, he was the one who introduced it to the world. While Pokemon is just a popular franchise. It does inspire some blatant attempts on plagiarism, but I rather doubt it will still be remembered in 30 years. Darker 1,351 August 23, 2014 Share August 23, 2014 (edited) Which has had a larger impact on society? LOTR was the entire remagination of fantasy, something never seen before, and every other writer followed his path of epic tales. Basically, I was talking with my friend and he compared Gandalf's immortal quote of "Fly you fools" with Mewtwo's quote about the creation of Pokemon. Is this a fair comparison? I don't really think it's fair. Gandalf with that quote fell in the pits of moria to fight with the Balrog. Mewtwo's quote was about realizing his mistake. Indeed. LOTR is one of the best novel franchises of all time and Pokemon is one of the best video game franchises of all time. Joy. It's all pure joy to things people like or mostly love. MLP is no different from Pokémon or LOTR, really, obvious differences aside. MLP has one of the hugest fanbases, but still, just a show mainly for children. However, the ideas used in both LOTR and Pokémon are unique, and have been repeated by other competitors to get the fame of the original, which they can't, because the original are SO good. In a VS, difficult to decide, I prefer LOTR, I'm much more familiar with it, but Pokémon is good too. As franchises, Pokémon is larger, but LOTR is just enormous in content. As for quality, LOTR wins with ease. In characters "VS"-kind of fight? LOTR godstomps Pokémon. No matter the many gods Pokémon has, LOTR has the Maiar, who are beyond godly. The earth Pokémon vs Gandalf/others, LOTR characters, again, too powerful. Gandalf in the book is also basically a god. Very creative type of story, compared to pokemon (even though im a fan of that too, but the creative side of it, is lesser than LotRs) XBL: Riot Rojas 3DS Friend Code: 5300 - 9568 - 7902 WEB/CHANNEL: THREADS: Youtube - ThunderColt Studios MLP:FIM - Wrath of the Ancients Fan Fictions Weebly - ThunderColt Studios MLP:FIM: The Day Equestria Stood Still - Volunteers Wanted

Hovershy 3,814 August 23, 2014 Share August 23, 2014 Definitely Lord of the Rings, the only trilogy I can think of that had a bigger impact would be Star Wars. Pokemon definitely had a big impact on society as well though. Fluttershy Fan Club sig by Blue Snowfire
