GoldenShield 46 January 22, 2013 Share January 22, 2013 Hey, just a question to all the awesome pony artists out there. I'm not sure if this is in the right area or not but I wanted to know, how do you draw your ponies, I have been trying but have been having a little trouble getting the proportions right. Just to be specific, I am only interested in finding out about how you draw ponies that look like the ones in the actual show, for now I'm not interested in any of the stylized stuff. Any help on how to get the proportions right would be much appreciated!

Dev 251 January 22, 2013 Share January 22, 2013 Some very basic advice would be to look at dozens, if not hundreds, of images consisting of ponies - This way, you can practise your anatomy and see how everything twists and turns, how they look in different perspectives, etc. etc. It's the long way, but it has guaranteed results with time! Trust me, I've done this before, and with dedication you can become excellent at drawing a particular thing. You just gotta start off from scratch. Everypony you draw will be slighty different than the ones from the show, but that is to be expected. It's like a fingerprint, it has a unique style to it. Happy drawing! They're super-helpful, but with the way the site is built, I can't download them. Edited January 22, 2013 by Winged Anomaly
GoldenShield 46 January 22, 2013 Author Share January 22, 2013 Thanks guys, this has been incredibly helpful, I'm working of a picture of my OC and Twilight as study buddies and I just got stuck after I had drawn the background (something I'm quite proud to say that I am quite good at) and I started on Twilight I just couldn't get her right but this is gonna help a lot. I am however thinking that it might be a better idea to scan in the background and the foreground separately then combine them in Photoshop so I don't accidentally ruin the work I've already done, plus then I can place them better and focus on making the characters look right independently of the background. If any of this sounds stupid, it would be because it's the second thing I have ever drawn in my entire life (not counting stick figures and doodles I did when I was a kid obviously) and if you want to know the other one was a Naruto OC face I drew when I was 15 so I am obviously not an expert on this kind of thing but I am a perfectionist so I like my art to look really good before I finish it. Hey, do you think you could link me to where you found those two images? They're super-helpful, but with the way the site is built, I can't download them. Oh, I can help you, click the image on the page and it will enlarge, then scroll to the bottom of the image and there should be a small icon you can click that says "Save" this should open up a save-able image in another tab (at least it does in Firefox). GoldenShield 46 January 30, 2013 Author Share January 30, 2013 SO, I just thought I should update that I have finished my first completely digital Pony drawing, it's a picture of my OC Moonshadow that I drew from scratch in Photoshop based on other pictures online, here! Take a look! Neat right? I decided that scanning in hand drawn pics wasn't my thing (also my scanner broke D:<) but I will see if can find some other way to get the two sketches that I have done online so everyone can see them!

Take a look! Moonshadow.jpg Very nice! If I didn't know any better I would say it was from the actual show! Don't know if you still need this, but for anyone looking for ponydrawings guides http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/01/pony-drawing-guides.html is a good place to start. It's where I got most of my drawing guides that I still use today. Also, I'm not an expert on this, but I find saving as a png takes a bit more space but it's higher quality. Jpg images tend to look a little blurry to me.
