Smilodon 18 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 I've been trying to figure out what real horse breeds the ponies are, if they are a real breed at all. Now, they are called ponies, so we could assume they are all Shetlands or another true pony breed, but then we have ponies like Big Mac. Big Mac has feathering like a draft horse (even though some ponies have feathering too), and a docked tail, also like a draft horse. So it is pretty obvious Big Mac is some sort of draft horse (Clydesdale?). And now Applejack is his sister, so unless he is only a half-brother, we can assume they are the same breed; so Applejack must be a draft horse as well. So far I've decided: Twilight Sparkle: Shetland Pony. I believe her to be the only true pony of the mane six, Shetland ponies are known for intelligence, and the show centers around "ponies"; so no wonder the main character would be one. The only issue would be the fact that she is the size of the other six, however maybe she isn't a Shetland, and is another, larger, pony breed instead, all ponies are known for intelligence. Rainbow Dash: Quarter Horse. I used to think Arabian, but then I saw those Saddle Arabia delegates. Anyways, Quarter Horse are racing horses, "athletes." Rainbow Dash flies very fast, and the Quarter Horse is usually considered the fastest breed. Applejack: As I said above, a Clydesdale or other draft horse. Fluttershy: Mustang. Fluttershy loves animals and nature. So no wonder she would be a feral horse that lives in the wild. Fluttershy is shy, but has shown us in episodes like "Put your Hoof Down" she can be quite tough and can take care of herself, like a wild Mustang. Rarity: Andalusian. Andalusian horses are known for their beauty, however they can be quite tough as well. Pinkie Pie: I really have no idea? Some kind of stock horse? Some kind of pony? I really just don't know. Anyways, what breeds do you think the ponies are, or are similar to.
Leafeon 2,702 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 (edited) Pinkie Pie would probably be an Argentina Polo Pony, they are quite feisty small little beasts. >.> I think it would make more sense for the Apple Family to be Suffolk Punches instead of Clydesdales, as Clydesdales aren't actually as good at work, they are better at pulling carts in comparison to Punches. Rainbow would make more sense as an Alkheal-Teke (or however you spell that) or Thoroughbred. I think Fluttershy would be more like a Gypsy Vanner... as they are graceful and not headstrong like a mustang... but kay. Your choices for Twi and Rarity are quite good. TRIXIE IS A THESSALIAN BECAUSE THEY ARE BEST BREED AND SHE IS BEST PONY... oh. And because they are quite head strong. That was much easier then it should be, actually. As for Dashie, your choices make sense as well. I just picked Quarter Horse because it's the first race horse that came to my head other than Arabian, but I defiantly agree with you there. himanuts 165 February 3, 2013 Share February 3, 2013 Considering actual horses have been introduced into the show, ponies seem to be something else. Like possibly another species. So I don't think how horse breeds are classified neccesarily can apply to ponies.
Adlynh 62 February 7, 2013 Share February 7, 2013 Lol I had the same question a few months ago. What I think is : For Twilight Sparkle, I would see her as a basic riding club pony that beginners can ride safely, learning them how to be a good rider without being too violent. She's the pony that every young riders love and the perfect equine teacher. For Rainbow Dash, according to her athletic skills, she would be a sport horse like a Hannoverian or KWPN, or any breed that you can see in international jumping competitions. She might be a Thoroughbred because of her speed skills too. She's the strong but delicate horse that can't be given to anyone and that can reach the podium easily. For Apple Jack, she's the perfect western horse that you can see in reinning competitions, but also in ranches, working with cows. She's the typical american horse. I see her as a palomino Quarter Horse. Rarity is, to me, definitly an Arabian, because of her delicate beauty but also the superficial side of her personnality. I imagine her as those Arabians that you can see in show competitions. Pinkie Pie would be a Shetland pony that loves playing pony games with kids. She's the funny fluffy pony used for games or other funny equestrian things. And Fluttershy, I see her as a Pottok pony... I don't know why, maybe because those ponies are very kind and cute but not very popular, and I see them kinda timid.
