A lame excuse he knew, but it was just because he didn't really like fighting. He just adored the organized movement system, just like his interest to mechanical stuff.

Joan opened her mouth, searched for words, closed it again, all her righteous indignation suddenly without a target.

Damn that colt.

In theory there was a world of hurt raining down on Asnee, yet somehow he had disarmed her with three sentences and that slow smile.

And he even looks like he meant every word he said. Moon, if I don't kill him before the night's over, I might just ask him out.

"Oh, alright then."

"Anyway, I need to move my legs before my forelegs cramp up in these."

She lifted one to indicate the silver shoe and lacing.

"If you'd care to join me, we could exchange more stories about famous ancestors and the like."

Whirl Wake raised in eyebrow. "Well, I guess I should go to ponyville more often." He smiled and laughed. "I noticed you take an interest in stars, is that right?" Whirl Wake looked up. "Can't blame you, I wish I took more time to admire them myself."

Star now, after Whirl talked about wanting to observe the stars, decided to tell him about her star.

 

"You see that star right there? The dim one at the tip of that big cluster? I discovered that one myself when I was a filly. I got to meet with Celestia herself." Star felt like she may come up as bragging, so she didn't continue. By the end of her sentence, she was blushing like mad.

Asnee stifled a laugh and just made a stifled giggle when he heard the mare's sentences. That was a beautiful night with moon and clear sky, full of stars. Would be such a shame if he didn't take a nice walk that night.

 

"Anywhere you want Miss Joan," he slighty waved his foreleg forward politely, "I'm right behind you."

 

He wanted to tell Joan to put those shoes off if she didn't feel comfortable with it, but he bit his tongue when he realized that talking about mare's shoes weren't so polite.

 

"It would such an honor to know more about your family Miss Joan." He said instead as he waited for the mare to make the first step.

Whirl Wake squinted at the star she identified. "Discovered it?" He said in awe. "Wow. I wish could meet Celestia. That must have been the coolest thing ever." He pulled his head down to see her turning red, and let out a small laugh before he too began blushing.

Star's face turned serious as she said under her breath "but that still didn't stop them" she was pretty sure Whirl didn't hear her. She continued. "It was pretty cool. I got an award, and I got my cutie mark at the same time. I'm just surprised Luna didn't find it, her being in charge of the night and all."

Whirl Wake's eyes went wide. "That must have been the best day ever!" He turned towards his flank. "I got mine when I found an advanced vaccine for the Pony Pox. Didn't get to meet the princess though." Whirl Wake chuckled. "I..." He looked down and fumbled with his words. "I lost my dad just a week before that happened."

He turned and threw two bits on the table. "I'll have regular cider, please." He looked back at Star. "What would you like? I'm buying." Whirl Wake smiled.

Althoguh it is the most diverse place I've ever seen." Star said. Althogough she had only ever been to Ponyville, Canterlot and Manehatten.

Whirl Wake looked into space. "I'd say my favorite would have to be Vinyl Scratch. I've listened to many of her songs; she's a very good musician." He looked back at her. "How about you? You got a favorite?" He smiled, trying to avoid filling the atmosphere with awkward again.

"To me, it all depends on the situation. If I'm all alone and chillin, I like Blood on The Dance Floor and Never Shout Never. If I'm working, I like to listen to Octavia playing Gauntlet by David Spata. It sounds lovely." Star said. She didn't specialize in one type of music, she focused on the situation.

When the silence grew for too long, he pulled something out of the blue. "You ever had a special somepony?" He let the words slip out and covered his mouth with his hoof after saying it. Oh god why...

Whirl was surprised that she answered, taking his hoof off of his mouth. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say that..." He looked around, a drop of sweat running down his forehead. "Excuse me, I'll be right back." Whirl Wake put his unfinished drink on a table and ran to a bathroom, where his rook off his mask and washed his face. What the hell are you doing? He asked himself.

Star wasn't all that surprised when Swirl took off. She wasn't very good at being social in general. She found a bench and started scatching star formations in her little notebook she carried everywhere. She looked up but saw nopony that seemed to be interested in talking to her, so she continued to draw.

They strolled past a unicorn Joan vaguely recalled seeing on one of the university towers with telescope.

"Well, I grew up in a small village in White Tail Wood. There aren't many pterasi living in Equestria." She waggled her wings in case Asnee wasn't familiar with the term.

"My parents work a small orchard there. Pears don't care if whether they are picked by day or night, is what my father used to say. But you probably heard that all before: A girl growing up in a small town, reads books and dreams of the whole wide world. And so I left to see it. Turns out there are quite lot of jobs for nocturnal ponies. I ended up in  Canterlot after a couple of years. And then..argh!"

Her right fronthoof had slipped into some animal's hole, twisting her ankle and driving the sharp edge of the shoe into the flesh above her hoof.

Cursing and wings waving wildly for balance, she hobbled over to the edge of a fountain and, with some difficulty, sat down on the circumference.

"Damn these things. Asnee, could you please help me get them off?"
