Some advice for a new brony, please?

As you can tell from the title I am new to the herd.I feel that i will enjoy my stay here and i can't wait to meet everyone. But you can also tell that I am in need of advice. One day I told my mom that I am a brony and, as I expected she was fine with it. I am very open about being a brony even at school, and I do not force my opinions on people who aren't bronys. The only person who didn't know was my dad.

One day my mom told my dad I was a brony and his reaction was just what  I expected. He started asking why why grown men were watching mlp and I just told simply told him 'Because it's good, the animation is mind blowing, and the writing is clever.' To which he replyed 'bulls****' and started going on about how bronies are nothing but sick-minded pedophiles. To clarify he has not seen the show or knows anything about cloppers. I showed him the brony documentary trailer to show him how big of a fandom this is and he just started saying stuff like 'Oh, that guys obviously gay' or twisting what they said to make it pedo-ish.

Now i ask, what do you think of his reaction? Do you find him sick minded for coming up with these conclusions? replies would be appreciated and I hope to find more accepting people here.

Not at all. I don't think your father is sick minded. Heck. I even still feel weird of being a brony, but what's wrong with it anyway? There's nothing wrong in the fandom other than the colourful ponies, which isn't really a big matter. The fandom is friendly, caring, fun, and as much as I know, we don't really like cloppers or molest children. We love the show because it's fun. No matter it's about ponies, or teddy bears with spaceships in the freaking moon, it's fun.

Also, note that Bronies do charity to people. Check our Christmass Merier in this forum. That's awesome! The fandom gathered money, used it to buy toys, and shared it to children who had to spent the Christmass in the hospital because they were sick. This is the only place which gives me a ray of light, that humanity still exists.

For a record, Bronies shared toys to children not because Bronies are pedophile, etc. Bronies shared happiness because...well, that's the right thing to do and it's fun isn't it? Seeing kids smile, laugh, and play happily with their toys always brings me the feeling I lost many years ago. I feel like I'm young again, and full of happiness and imagination. Is there something wrong with that?

P.S. Don't hate your father just because he says such things. He just doesn't know about Bronies. That's all. :)

Oh no, me and my dad have our little debates all the time. It's just this was a bit more personal since he was talking about bronies as a whole so it just seemed a bit like a low blow. After this happened I said to him and i quote.

'Yes I watch My Little Pony, and even though we have very different opinions on it I will tolerate yours and we will move on.'

That's pretty much how all our arguments end. agreeing to disagree, and of course I don't hate him. How could I show the power of friendship if  I hated people for different opinions.

Oh no, I have a gay brother and he is perfectly fine with that. It's just strange that when a girl plays call of duty that's cool, but when a guy watches mlp that's weird.

Sad part of life is sometimes people that don't understand something fear it and fear moreso the possibility of understanding it.

Things that are different from the undefined "norm" is frightening to most.

So pretty much his reaction is fairly straight forward and the expected part.

On a light side though, and try not to take thing badly, but i get a kick out of it every time i see a black person with a betty boop sticker or some other OLD toon on their vehicle or clothes.. Mostly as those old toons and their creators are/were VERY racist. Some of the "banned" episodes can even still be found on the web in a few places. And banned as in they're NEVER to be aired or placed in the public eye by the companies that own them ever again due to racial slurs and more. Pretty bad in some cases, pretty silly in others.

Why i bring it up though is because people often don't need a real reason to like something if they just like it. Even if the show wasn't all that great (and tbh most of its pretty level, FAR better than most modern shows though) you shouldn't need a reason at all to justify WHY you like something.

Just like it because you do.

Theres never a need to look beyond what you already know/see unless it truly stands for that which makes the one part of it wrong (I.E. just because Betty Boop had racist creators and a few undertones in her episodes, does this make the character bad? Why should it? She herself never took part in any of it (TMK))

Heck, a lot of people i've seen collecting Hello Kitty stuff didn't even know it was a show, they just liked the cute merchandise.

Having to justify yourself to anyone beyond your deity however just shouldn't be considered a priority. People will always find a reason to have dislikes for things you like.... Though i've little doubt that not unlike Pokemon and others before it, MLP will soon be touted as a "tool of the devil" by many misinformed preachers :/

My mother tore into a pastor at her church after they slandered Harry Potter the entire session and then botched it by referring to the writer as "he"... Ummm the writer, J.K. Rowling, is a woman... doh!

in the end, the old phrase that still pays and applies to such.

"Haters gonna Hate"

no point in trying to understand, just let'em live their lives in hate if thats how they wish to live.

Edit: dang.. sry to get long winded, i hate it when i do that... danged brain goes into overdrive...

That's weird, I actually like it when people get long winded. Also brohoof to everyone who put their two cents on the matter. Anyway, it's almost 8:00. time for ponies on the hub.

My advice here is to just not to take it to heart. I am an American Soldier and i have one other brony in my unit. My unit being the 278th ACR (Armored Calvary Regiment) Troop B Signal Corps RST (Regiment Support Troop) and i know of other Bronies that are not in my troop but still in the 278th, if i could count them all i would have to say that at least 15% of the 278th are Bronies. I also know of Sailors, Airmen, and MARINES that are Bronies. So if your father could see us Armed Forces happily admitting that we are Bronies, then i think, THINK, he would change his mind. But alas some people are heard headed.

My point is, be happy, if your happy being a Brony, then be a Brony and dont let hatters get to you.

And in fact theres a lot more of us, ex-mil and current, in the forums here.. more than i would've guessed by a long shot.

And i agree, them hatters are crazy... with their silly tea parties and march hares...

sry couldn't resist that one.

At first, i'm sure most of us were reluctant to give the show a chance because it seemed "gay" and "girly" , i don't blame your father, he just doesn't have a very good understanding of what it's all about, My advice would be to just sit down and try to have a rational discussion with him and i'm sure he'll get it

I would say that since you said yourself that you both have agreed to disagree and moved on then I would argue that you shouldn't take it to heart.  I had a similar experience with my father who still doesn't believe that 'real men' watch the show.  My response to him was that you know me, and I like the show, this should invalidate any theories you have about people that watch the show.  If that doesn't get through then I would just say move on and don't worry about it.  If it doesn't sour your relationship or your enjoyment of the show just remember that and move on.

Hope that helps!  Welcome to the herd my good fellow!

My advice is get him to watch an episode and point out some of the references to Pokémon, Mortal Combat, Greek mythology, Dostoevsky, etc, etc.

The references in MLP range from Aristotle and Homers Odyssey, to Indiana Jones. The writing is amazing and great voice actors, I'm sure if you explained things a little bit and showed him that the show isn't "for little girls" I'm sure he would start to get it.
My parents sure as hell did. My dad was a little harder but after showing him an episode he tells me that he can see why I like it.
