I remember seeing these in my copy of Blue and my brother's copy of Red and everytime I caught it, I would get yelled at by my brother to get rid of it cause it will ruin his game. I didn't think much of it at the time, but now that I know what can happen if you catch it, i will only kill it now.

I've seen missingno. quite a bit. Its pretty cool, easy way to get many Master Balls, lol.

Here's a technical explanation:

Missingno. is used to fill Pokemon slots that aren't occupied. Did you know that there were 190 Pokemon planned from the beginning? Only 151 made the cut, and several others later appeared in Gold and Silver. Anyway, Missingno. occupies these slots.

There's a glitch involving the Old Man in Viridian City, the one that hasn't had his coffee yet and later teaches you how to catch a Pokemon.

Basically, When you enter a route, the game populates a table with information on Wild Pokemon in the area. Since towns don't have Wild Pokemon, this data is cleared. If you talk to the Old Man, and have him teach you how to catch Pokemon, your name is replaced with OLD MAN. The data for your name gets stored where the Wild Pokemon would be.

Anyway, afterwards, you get your name back, but the data isn't cleared from the Wild Pokemon data. So, when you fly to Cinnibar Island, the data is never replaced. Since the water tiles to the East are programmed to contain Wild Pokemon, it causes a glitch because that is still counted as being "in town," and thus, the Wild Pokemon data (Which is still your name) is never replaced like it should be.

There's a quick and dirty explanation for you. Its kinda cool to read about, and an easy way to duplicate items.
