Nature's Spell 526 April 27, 2013 Share April 27, 2013 Here's something else I wonder about. I've heard the phrase "Fillies and Gentlecolts" several times in the show, but since both titles are age related (young horses to be exact) aren't they really saying "girls and boys"? Shouldn't the phrase be "Mares and Gentlestalllions"? Attention to detail on the writers part is lacking unless I'm off base. 1 Princess Twilight Sparkle: Princess of Friendship Princess Luna: Princess of the Night My short stories
Eureka 1,119 April 27, 2013 Share April 27, 2013 That's a pretty good question, I believe colts and stallions are both male horses. I'm guessing Gentlestallions... Didn't sound correct? I'm not very sure. Quote Eureka's words of wisdom has inspired me, I should start listening to her more. ~DX Silver

I'm not very sure. Yes colts are young and equivalent to fillies. You may be right that it didn't sound right and they likely figured it wouldn't be noticed, but fillies is a common word on the show and is used almost interchangeably with girls. 1 Princess Twilight Sparkle: Princess of Friendship Princess Luna: Princess of the Night My short stories
Zhooves 843 April 27, 2013 Share April 27, 2013 (edited) I have been thinking about this a little as well, and I have simply come to the conclusion that using 'mares and gentlerstallions' doesn't sound as good/fluent as 'fillies and gentlecolts'... Which reminds me that Celestia pronounced Cadence and Shining Armour 'mare and COLT', which once again might be because it sounds better, but I think it would have worked just fine with stallion... And then again, this is a family-show based on younger girls, which either could mean they don't care too much about it being correct, as they demographic of younger girls probably wouldn't question it, or they're simply teaching the little kids wrong stuff... Which if taken seriously by a parent might lead to problems for Hasbro/DHX... Also, when did I get a magnifying-glass- and a graph-tattoo on my hip? EDIT: ALSO - Celestia is over a millennia old - EVERYPONY'S a filly or colt in her eyes~ Edited April 27, 2013 by Zhooves So I took this personality-test... And apparently, I'm most like Fluttershy~2015- edit - not too much has changed, but now I'm a wee bit more like Twilight~
Rainbow Dash Loyalty 1,275 April 27, 2013 Share April 27, 2013 Nah, Gentlestallions seems to sound weird to me because of that extra syllable, I'm fine with 'Fillies and Gentlecolts'. It's not too big of a deal anyway, saying 'girls and boys' is the same as 'females and males' so it shouldn't really bother anyone saying so. ~Signature created by Chaotic Discord~
Nature's Spell 526 April 27, 2013 Author Share April 27, 2013 (edited) But it does bother me! It does, it does! However, colts does sound better. Still, if we didn't over analyze every detail we wouldn't be true bronies. One might argue that nothing really matters, but if you say that we'd have nothing to discuss.
