Justin ZW 396 May 3, 2013 Share May 3, 2013 I was watching Luna Eclipsed yesterday, and I noticed that Luna's guards that pulled her chariot were... well, they resembled bats. Their wings look very batlike, as opposed to the wings of pegasi. This makes me wonder... are they a separate race of ponies altogether? Or perhaps they're just pegasi who serve Luna? The show never explains it, so we're left to speculate. I personally think they're pegasi who serve Luna, and have taken on darker characteristics as a result. But perhaps that's outlandish. CamRad18 337 May 3, 2013 Share May 3, 2013 Well the fanon for Celestia's royal gaurds is that their armor is enchanted to make them all look the same (to protect their identities). I think it's the same for Luna's gaurds, just a darker theme. “I never found beauty in longing for the impossible and never found the possible to be beyond my reach.” ― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged I can poem well: Rhymey Time with CamRad18 Poet's Club: share, critique, and chat
Veylon 255 May 3, 2013 Share May 3, 2013 I think we all want to see more of these guys. I feel like there ought be some kind of changing of the guard every evening and morning where the gold-armored guys and the bat-ponies switch places. I wouldn't necessarily want an episode revolving around them or anything; it'd just be nice to see them doing their guard stuff in the background the way the other guys do. Rainbow Dash Loyalty 1,275 May 3, 2013 Share May 3, 2013 Well Princess Luna is the Goddess of the Moon/Night so of course she'd have guards to protect, transport, message and basically anything she wants them to. I guess it's just a fitting theme for her guards to wear a 'dark' type of armor, as you can see that Celestia's Royal Guards are wearing bright golden colors, while the Luna's Night Guards wear a dark, purple color for their armor. 4 ~Signature created by Chaotic Discord~
U_Flame 6 May 3, 2013 Share May 3, 2013 (edited) I'm usually for the enchanted armor theory, until Fallout Equestria Project Horizons. Project Horizons has batponies as an actual race. They live in secret due to fear and social adjustment issues. It was Luna that introduced them to the outside, but they still mainly live in darkness. Nothing really changed over the course of centuries, even with the apocolipse. Their society is likely a monarchy, as they're known to have a king. Interestingly, they can only speak bat; barely audiable chirps and speaks. Luna's armor is what apparently grants them the pony vocal chords that allow them to actually speak. They have natural control over shadows, being able to jump into and between them, and being able to materialize and therefore weaponize shadows; at least as tendrils coming out, not anything complex like shapeshifting material. So yeah, the Project Horizons's appearance is now my headcanon. Edited May 3, 2013 by U_Flame

Equestria Prevails is awesome. I prescribe to the "nocturnal guard" fanon, because that's just badass. It's already been shown that other equine species outside of the ponies exist. Why not have some bat ponies? Onwards to my DeviantArt page! Sig by the illustrious Kyoshi!
