The wind sighs, I protect and guide my people. The Children of the Night, such as your Princess Luna, are often warned against overbearing pride. It is not often that they listen. The lure of power is great for many, and so I would have to ask which villages you speak of. I would also remind you that Tyranny itself isn't bad, but that often the Tyrants are corrupted at heart. A silver mirror appeared and levited in front of him. It showed him, the room, and the Night standing next to him. If he looked where she should be outside the mirror, he would see nothing, accept Lyth a ways away. Think of where you'd like to see, and this mirror will scry the place. You can only see places you've been before, however, so be careful.

Cosmo spoke softly, naming each of the towns he'd liberated. It was a surpringly long list and when he was done scrying, he sighed with a relieved smile. "I recognized one colt I saw there. He tried to attack me when I entered a group's hiding spot. I was so surprised by his determination he managed to cut my shoulder. He's grown quickly, and seems to be impersonating me to discourage attacks from nearby bandits... I never thought those cheap defenses I helped plan would last this long." Altair chuckled, "Well, one day there's an army occupying a town, the next they've got walls and defenses. Those bandits probably don't care where you are, they won't risk angering you." Cosmo smiled but didn't speak for a moment, then asked, "What was life in the church like Lyth?"

She smiled at the wall and sighed, "Everything a little reject like me could've hoped for. Full of friends and knowledge, and full of the Lady. I learned everything I know there, and I earned my cutie mark through that knowledge," she sighed, "And my parents could not except it. An earth pony should not learn magic, they said. They renounced me as a sorceress. I lost my inheritance, my family name, and my honor, because of the temple. But it no longer matters, for my mother is the Night, and my brothers won't abandon my side because they can't displease somepony outside their family." She looked away.

Cosmo smiled as well, "All I knew about my mom was that I inherited her colors. My father was white with grey eyes, but my mother was the same blue coat, red eyed pony I am. I couldn't help but compare her to the night sky growing up, so I guess thinking of the Night as my mother is something I've really always done... You know, I've never met ponies who were upset by magic. I know a lot of towns without many unicorns hold on to traditions of using not magic for specific events and I know some earth ponies fear magic, but I've never met any of them... Do you have any close friends in the church? I'm pretty certain you don't have a coltfriend there," Cosmo slightly teased, "but are there any friends who stand out?"

You know not what you're asking her right now, Cosmo.

"O-of course I have friends!" she proclaims quickly, "Sagitarius, Tarous, Virgo, Cancer, Leo, and all my other buddies!" (The learned pony would know those were all constellations. I'm sure you knew that, though.) "And now I have you, Altair, and Noctus!"

The wind sighs, Oh, hers is a hard path. She is as a salmon swimming up stream. On the one hoof, her parents left her to fend for herself; on the other, she is a talented, gifted, willful student surrounded by naturally entitled, jealous classmates. However, she does have a few friends.

Cosmo gave her a sad andknowing smile, "Noctis eh?" Cosmo said, hovering the sword he made Lyth around her, "I grew up without any friends either. Those of my peers that would've approached me were frightened by my father. I was placed in private lessons with the masters and the time I had outside those was spent studying texts, eating , sleeping, and bathing. Altair was the closet thing I had to a friend... and I mean the sword my guardian dwells in, not Altair the spirit." Cosmo put a hoof on Lyth's shoulder, "Even when we went on mission together, the only disciple who approached me was Sear Blade, and he just wanted the 'luxuries' I had... Of course, these things were all I knew, so it was only when I was in Buckbarrel that I realized how horrible my life was. Still, I took comfort in the night sky... I always felt best when Libra was in the sky. Tarous, not so much." Edited by TheBreech

"Oh, the bull isn't so bad once you get to know him. His story is rather tragic. A beast trapped in the sky, to be forever remembered as a destroyer. But bulls have many symbols; nopony would remember he could also represent fertility unless they read his lonely scroll. No one would ever remember his passion either, because that was Scorpio's gag. But they'd fail to notice that Scorpio is also loyalty. All of the stars are connected, and help our Lady watch over us. A practiced mind can find them; an enlightened mind can hear them; an accepting mind confides in them. One can learn much from what is written in the stars."

She smiles, then frowns and hides her tears. "But I'm just some mare in a boat adrift at sea. What wisdom could I possess? The words are not from my experience, so why would a pony want to listen to me? The salmon that couldn't," she spits.

"The salmon that couldn't what? Perform an initiation ceremony normally conducted by several ponies? Have the courage to join a quest to sail off to a magically guarded island and stop a mad sorcerer? Understand that wisdom despite her youth?" Cosmo made sure Lyth was looking at him when he said, "Or are we talking the earth pony who did all those things and learned magic despite everything that wanted to get her way? The pony who is way too young to be upset with herself for not having much life experience or personal wisdom? The mare I love?" Cosmo hugged Lyth as he finished speaking, hoping to comfort her.

Lyth teared up and hugged him, crying into him. I don't deserve something like this.

Selythria, I've never dreamed such nonsense would come from your mouth. Don't 'deserve'? Such talk is left to the arrogant and the ignorant. This isn't something about deserving, this is something about your heart. I will not have any of my children walk alone. One to hold the shield..."

And the other to hold the lamp.

"Your church is not only your home, it is your family in all but blood. Any one of them would take a dagger for you; how you could be so blind to their admiration is beyond me, High Priestess."

But... But... I...

"Silence. Everypony has a story, and a reason to act. We all show affection in different ways. Jealousy and rivalry are different. You mistake their entitlement for contempt. It is true that you have not always been dealt with fairly, but the mark in your flank, and the silver necklace around your neck, mark you as mine. And you are always near family."

Lyth cried into Cosmo for a long time after her layers had been peeled back. She was probably most open right now.

Cosmo silently held her, knowing too well how emotional she felt. "It's like how I felt when Luna made me her assistant..." Altair faded into the sword, intending to give the two as much privacy as he could. Cosmo appreciated that, and they both thought Lyth would too.

(I felt kinda tied up at the moment... Also, Lyth is turning out to be the ideal girlfriend for me. I'm good at comforting people but I need someone to hex my door from time to time, XP )

(Ahh, well, I'm glad you like her. Seems not everyone does.)

Lyth eventually stopped, and gradually came to realize the position they were in. She immediately had two simultaneous thoughts; Push him away before I alienate him by being myself, and Hold him tightly and never let him go. Stallions like this come once in a lifetime. She then had a different thought. Trust him enough to know that, while we may not be exactly perfect, this was meant to be. She smiled at Altair, with a much less insightful, funnier thought: I always wanted to say this. "Hey Altair, group hug!" she says happily to the sword, opening a hoof to let the sword's spirit into the hug.

In the silence of waiting for Altair's reply, a faint humming could be heard from the sword. Cosmo chuckled and explained, "He thought you'd want as much privacy as possible. I'll get him." Cosmo kicked the sword, which got Altair's attention. Cosmo cast a quick spell to give Altair a semi physical form and they group hugged Lyth, both stallions trying to decipher the sudden interest in their private link.

(Emotionally needy, smart, organized, and a touch of crazy? I think I'm in love XD )

This may very well be the happiest day of my life so far. Well, 2nd happiest. The happiest day was the day I went from having no friends, to becoming a priestess. But this is a close second, like half a centimeter. And this isn't cast in the illusion of childhood youth! Eventually, they stop hugging. "So, Altair... No, it's none of my business." Why ruin a happy moment with a stupid question.

(Agreed)

The two both looked at her like she was teasing them, and Altair said, "Well it's too late now! You can just cut a question off like that!" Cosmo chuckled, "Ask whatever you want Lyth. I don't really keep secrets and Altair will tell you if he doesn't want to answer, so just ask the question."

Altair was the first to recover, explaining, "Lyth, that sword and I are as seperate as you and your bedroom. I use it as a home but I existed in Equestria long before that blade was forged. I was once an aimless entity and I went mad as I could percieve ponies around me but, without a body or voice, couldn't comunicate with anyone. Cosmo's ancestor, Fade, was the first to communicate with me. I took on the name Shadesteel when his children could see me too and I swore to become a guardian for his family. When Cosmo first inherited me, he only knew the history of how I helped his bloodline, and he rejected me. In time, he opened up to me, and I changed my name to that of his sword as a symbol of my fresh start and a slight catalyst to our bonding. I've possed the swords of my companions for a long time, so I feel attuned to them as a home, but I am not a sword myself... I fear I dragged that out much further than I needed to, but I think I've answered your question." Cosmo seemed distracted and muttered, "I should probably rename the sword..." Edited by TheBreech

"You can't re-name the sword now! I'm already calling him Altair!" she joked. "Okay, so you're not a spirit trapped in the blade. It must of been terrible, though. To walk through crowds of ponies and actually be invisible and voiceless. I can't imagine what that would do to somebody..."

Lyth blushed hard too, for multiple reasons. One of them was for the word 'our,' but the other one was for the world 'children.'She had a vision of being surrounded by a bunch of foals in Ninja training. "Uh, Cosmo... How many foals are you thinking about?" she asked cautiously.

Altair's humming returned, signaling him leaving their conversation. After a moment of serious thought, Cosmo replied "I guess 2 or 3. I would like more than one but not very many. You should probably know I prefer quality over quantity, and I just can't imagine being able to manage a lot of kids... Have you ever thought about your preferred family size?" Cosmo with a nervous smile and a clear blush.

"One or two. Big families are way to hard to manage. I think even with three kids my time would be occupied solely with keeping them in line. I can't even begin to imagine how those with more do it," she sighs. "However, not something in our near future. Marriage comes first, after all, and we haven't even gotten there yet. Not that I need a ring tomorrow or anything," she adds quickly.

Cosmo chuckles, "Here we are sailing off to deal with a psycotic dark mage with his own island sea monsters and minions, and we're making plans for the distant future." Shaking his head, he added, "Shows much intimidated we are." Cosmo kicked the sword again, "Altair, you're part of the family too so come on out here." The spirit appeared chuckling, "Well, I know you're walking out if there together. I would add or not at all, but I'm confident in Cosmo's resourcefulness in addition to Lyth's power. If we attack at night, Umbra won't have the slightest chance."

"You have much faith in me. At the end of the day, I still don't have a horn, and no focus for my magic. That is why it is necessary for me to use runes; if I did not, my magic would have more chance of doing something I didn't want than the thing I meant to do," she says, "But without a horn, without that focus, my magic leaves in larger amounts. It's tiring just to regulate, and battle adrenaline can burn very quickly. I have more confidence in you, Crimson, and Swordpoint than I have in myself."

"Well, if you have confidence in me, trust when I say you sell yourself short. Besides, you mean with that huge book of yours, you don't have any runes that could turn Noctis into a focusing tool? Pegasi use their wings to channel magic, why can't you enchant your newly bound sword to focus your power?" Cosmo asked as both a suggestion and a legitamite question. If he could give his sword that ability, he could endure taking a blow to his horn and maintain his magic. Altair commented slyly through their link, "I can't help but notice it was when marriage came up that you mentioned Umbra..." Cosmo said nothing but blushed slightly.

I am an expert in whatever you don't call me out for not really being, and don't know enough about to realize I have no clue what I'm doing   :)

"To answer you question, because I would have to link my magic to my sword. Which would mean destroying the sword would be like destroying your horn. Think, Cosmo; do pegasi cast as quickly, efficiently, and easily as you can? No; Swordpoint has to carefully gather energy in order to cast safely. Well, earth ponies channel through their eyes, if they can channel at all. That means a lot off different things for me; my magic is different than Swordpoint's, my eyes are a bit more important to me than they normally would be, and I can literally see magic, and determine what kind it is. For instance, the amulet I gave you glows a bit like a glow stick. The amulet you received from the Night glows with a sparkling brilliance of the moon. Swordpoint glows like a miniature sun. I shudder to think what would become of me if all of my magic were focused into an instrument of war..." she explains. She notices his blush and stares pointedly at Altair. Couldn't keep the conversation open, could you? she thinks, running in her mind the possible things he could've said.

In every heart, there is darkness

In every action, there is consequence

In every breath, there is hope

In the end, what matters most?

umbra chuckled ominously as he watched crimson and his crews steady adventure to his island, finding cosmo and lythe's conversation especially amusing, "hehehehe...young love...how pathetic...children? don't make me laugh! its not like either of them will live long enough to even think about that...they may have survived the island of trials, but they wont be surviving my next little surprise...
πάει εμπρός ψυχές της λύπης!" chanted umbra, casting a summoning spell on the deck of the blaze of glory. "enjoy my gift...while you still can..." said umbra with an evil laugh as a strange shining bowl of water appeared on the main deck of the ship, crimson had not yet noticed this however.

((let the amusement begin...))
