So many theories are around on the princesses that I thought it would be fun to see how much support some common ideas have. This poll deals a lot with history and ancestry but those are the ones that came to mind.

However Celestia and Luna came to be, I've always thought they've been Alicorns all along. The show does seem to emphasize that they're different from Twilight and Cadence. Time may tell though.

 

No real idea who the Mystery Princess you're referring to is. I might just be out of the loop (as is unfortunately all too common )

 

My headcanon is that Cadence is decended from the old royalty of the Crystal Empire (and Sombra too, in fact), so yes.

 

I've always thought it would be nice if the Mane Six were descended in some way from their characters in the Hearths Warming Eve play.

 

I don't really ever expect to see a male Alicorn in the show, but considering that we now know that one can become one by being worthy if it, it wouldn't make much sense to conclude that only mares can be Alicorns.

Thank you! Did not give enough context for that one. I made this up quickly before work, so it's rough around the edges. Still I thought was a good poll idea.

I gave too little context for the Mystery Princess. My fault. I agree with you about the Mane 6 being decendents. It fits so perfect even down to them fighting amongst each other. I fixed the questions.

The Princess from the Hearts and Hooves Day story is named "Golden Dream".  Her boyfriend's name was "Blue Dream".  No mystery there.

Unfortunately, that's fanon, not canon. Prince Blue Dream and Princess Golden Dream are two G2 Earth Ponies that were released as a toy set, complete with a commercial going on about their romance. Those names have not been mentioned in any official G4 material. It may very well be that the writers intended those two characters to be modeled on the G2 ponies, but that hasn't been confirmed anywhere to my knowledge.

All right fanon time!

 

Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, There was a draconequs named Harmony who is the brother of Discord. Harmony created three alicorn sisters to protect equestria and gave them the Elements of Harmony. The three sisters were Celestia, Luna, and a third who was the crystal princess and mother of Cadance.

The Crystal Empire was attacked by the changelings led by Chrysalis' mother, who killed Cadance's parents. Cadance's mother saved her daughter by sealing her in a piece of crystal.

Celestia and Luna decided not to release Cadance and subject her to the trauma. Sombra took advantage of the Empire's weakened state and took control until Celestia and Luna defeated him.

 

Because of the trauma of losing her sister and the Crystal Empire, Sombra's manipulative personality and her feelings of underappreciation, Luna became Nightmare Moon. Celestia was forced to use the Elements against her, and Harmony punished Celestia for turning the Elements against another bearer by severing her link to the Elements.

Long after, Celestia got over all her grief and finally released Cadance and told her everything.

 

Also, the six founders of Equestria are the respective ancestors of the mane 6, and the couple from Hearts and Hooves are another story.

 

With my luck, this intricate story will probably be completely demolished by season 4...
