Anneal 2,198 August 22, 2013 Share August 22, 2013 So this is one of the possibilities I like to make up. There is a good deal of evidence backing up both sides, so don't take it too seriously. Heliocentric: Celestia does not move the sun but instead control the rotation of the planet. It could be possible that she is able to control it. (Luna, however, still moves the moon and acts as a secondary force for Celestia.) Technically, they're preventing their world from being disintegrated by the sun and/or crashing into the moon. Luna could have prevented the sunrise by simply stopping the rotation of the planet so that Equestria would stay in permanent darkness. And if doing so would cause unwanted disasters, then she could place the moon to desired positions. And if the sun was revolving around their planet, then they other planets and moons would have been destroyed; the gas planets completely wiped out, unless they were at a very far distance from the sun. In one episode, Owl Well that Ends Well, Twilight needed her astronomy book, which she states that it's a book on "stars, moons, planets, and the universe". Plus, there are comets. The information she mentions greatly matches the ones we have here. And a video of the intro, on the 26th second, shows a glass window implying a heliocentric solar system. The reason why they say that Celestia and Luna "raises" the sun and moon could be linguistic convention, like how we say "the sun goes up/down". Geocentric: I don't have much defense for this side, unfortunately, since I seem to be biased on the former. The sun Celestia moves is a "satellite" of their world's atmosphere, or acting as a planet with their world being the "fake sun". The sun could actually be much smaller than the sun we have on Earth, explaining how their world isn't annihilated yet. In Lesson Zero, the sun also goes into evident intervals. If that was to happen on a heliocentric solar system, then the world would have had multiple surges in speed, and it would have been a bad day in Equestria. (It's the time for someone to counter-argue now. I like creating debates.)
Scootalove 10,692 August 23, 2013 Share August 23, 2013 I think of it as Heliocentric even though in Lesson Zero, the sun was moving slowly in an interval pattern. Celestia controls the sun's rotation, raising the sun up and setting the sun down, while Luna controls the moon's rotation and so on. There are a lot of theories on the sun and moon in their universe. So, that's my opinion. Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules
Naught Important 434 August 23, 2013 Share August 23, 2013 This is how I see it: After listening to Digibrony's and BronyCurious's discussion panel in some sort of brony con I don't remember the exact name of, I thought of this: Since someone there claimed that magic might actually run the universe, I thought that, when Discord was ruling, there was no Friendship, therefore no magic. So, the revolution and rotation of the planets stopped. That heated up one side of Earth immensely, and froze the other. When Celestia and Luna took over, they restored friendship, but had to restart the movements of the Sun and Moon, which may have got them their cutie marks. All-in-all, the Equestrian solar system is not exactly Geocentric, but not Heliocentric either. Its like, the sun moves around Earth like the moon, but all the other planets still revolve around the sun. The extent of my interest is in things that don't exist. Or, at least, things that aren't in the basic man's senses
Anneal 2,198 August 23, 2013 Author Share August 23, 2013 All-in-all, the Equestrian solar system is not exactly Geocentric, but not Heliocentric either. Its like, the sun moves around Earth like the moon, but all the other planets still revolve around the sun. I get what you're saying. You mean that their world is acting like a binary star to the sun, while the rest of the planets continue to revolve around both of them.
Mand'alor Dash 2,225 August 23, 2013 Share August 23, 2013 It's been pretty well established by lore that Celestia literally raises the sun, and does not simply control the rotation of the planet. If the latter were true, then not only would Lesson Zero have been a catastrophe, but Nightmare Moon's "eternal night" would not have worked at all, due to the sun always being up in some part of the world. Science aside, I believe a geocentric Equestria is simply a more interesting story. The more this world differentiates itself from our own, the the deeper its rooting in fantasy. That's why my headcanon will always be that Equestria is not only geocentric, but also flat. Amoral cynic with a bitchin' vocabulary.
