I've been watching an old British sitcom called Spaced over the last couple of weeks and I feel like it does this in very much the same vain as MLP. The show isn't very plot-heavy though (no pun intended). It's more character-driven and the cast of the show has such remarkable chemistry that they really do seem like they are great friends.

 

In particular, the episode called Epiphanies does this very well. I could totally imagine the Mane 6 going out to the club and having an absolute blast together.
