Alright friend ship is magic.  We all accept this.  (right?  I'm gonna assume for the purpose of this concept).

 

I was running it through my mind, "what if equistra had a magical dead zone, would friend ship cease to work?"

Now in past threads about making elements of disharmoney

 

most (if not all) bronies get stuck at what exactly is the opposite of magic?

 

What's apposed friend ship more than anything else?

Chaos.  Chaos is the opposite of magic, and in a zone of chaos (as we've seen in return to Harmony) is one in witch friend ship can not sustain itself.  one or the other has to give way.

 

Now, we (or most of us) see discord as chaos.  he's clearly the standing embodiment of chaos.  (and he's q's rip off/homage).

If there's something behind discord,

I mean he's not exactly doing his job.  he's not spreading chaos.

I think by cease to work, you mean cease to exist. Discord spreads his chaos in small doses, due to the fact of being chaotic neutral which means he causes chaos most of the time when the Mane 6 aren't looking and sometimes he can play as a good asset. In a magical dead zone, magic wouldn't be of use in the zone and magic would cease to exist.

Friendship is considered a magic that transcends regular magic IMO.

So a magic "dead zone" wouldn't harm it since even non-unicorns can experience it. It's a reference to the metaphorical "magic of the heart" as opposed to literal its a magic spell.

The whole message of the series in a sense is the good feeling that friendship can bring is "like magic" as it bonds different people together.

 

As to the opposite... The opposite of a friend is an enemy... and chaos is the opposite of balance or harmony...  friends can be chaotic.... and sometimes the best friends are (though hopefully in the fun chaotic sense like Pinky pie)

An enemy can become a friend, but I'm not sure how they are trying to work that one given they're still playing with Discord.

 

As to the Q and Discord comparison.. its possible, but questionable since he is supposed to already be reformed.

 

TBH Celestia said she had use for him, and thats never been exposed as to in what way..

Friendship isn't an enchantment, unless it was a form of a spell. It's basically the main moral of the show.

Bluntly, no.

Celestia was making this a point with Sunset shimmer (for those that read the comic) and Twilight.

That studies and regular magic aren't always whats best.

Sometimes something besides magic that is needed, and thus friends. So long as friends are together they can overcome the odds and come out on top (in fiction anyways)

As above, kind of the point of the show..

Chain of thought here, don't mind me.

 

The word 'discord' is the opposite of the word 'harmony', and the entity Discord is the spirit of Chaos. But Chaos is not really the opposite of Harmony in my mind.

 

I don't think in dualities much. I prefer Triads. In my mind, Harmony *isn't* Order. Harmony is Balance between three different forces:

 

Chaos: growth, creation, unrestrained change

Order: tradition, survival, fixed patterns

Void: destruction, death, removal of excess

 

In this pattern, Discord is Chaos, Celestia the unchanging is Order, and we don't really have a Void. There's no character yet that represents Annihilation, unless you really stretch Sombra and/or Nightmare Moon about and that's a real stretch for characterization.
