I'm thinking about my future now so I don't have to later.

I like to travel, and especially to road trip. Call me weird, go ahead, but that's how I am. I'll be going to college in Fairbanks for undergrad, and when I come up with the money get a PhD in Germany. While I'm in Fairbanks, for college or for earning money, I hope to spend summers traveling by road between there and the South. Me being a cheapskate, I think it would be too fricking expensive to own a house, and to have cars, and to have to pay for a hotel room while I'm down there, not to mention flying costs. It wouldn't work for that dream. Neither would taking an RV, because those cost about as much as a house, I'm told.

But I do have another idea. I was running around Craigslist one day looking for spare junk cars, and I randomly thought that I might buy a van (full size van, not minivan), stick an air mattress and an electric heater in it, and call it an RV. Right now I'm looking at a Nissan van, since I hear it's superior to and yet cheaper than Ford/Chevy vans.

I'm being told from all directions that this idea sucks and that I should just forget about it to go the expensive route of life. I think, though, that it would totally work and in terms of other assets I could totally live the high life.

What are you guys' opinions? Post here.

It will work just fine as long as the weather isn't dipping below -15C.  Buy the junk van, but make sure it's inspected.  Someponies think that to live a happy life, you need to have shiny things and be in massive debt, I call bullshit.  If you're comfortable, who cares.

Power to you, do it.  B)

I say go for it dude. Hell If I lived near ya I would so join you. Keep the weather in mind also keep a first aid kit with ya. You never know what could happen on the road. Oh keep some things you May need for the van with ya too. Better to be prepared.

Listen buddy,

You do whatever it takes to make a life for yourself. Depending on how old the van in question is, you may have to spend some money on gas (I could be completely wrong about that, take it with a grain of salt).

Either way, I'd say run with it. Just make sure you have some kind of money coming in so you can do maintenance on the van (and for gas of course) and so you can enjoy yourself.  Good luck!
