Are any children safe anymore?

Has everypony heard the news about the Talking Angela app? Hopefully I'm not late to the party so to speak, but I just found out recently that a pedophile has been preying on children through an app called Talking Angela. He finds out info about little girls by talking to them through the app. Personally I am disgusted but not exactly surprised.

You can either despair that a rosebush has thorns, or rejoice that a thornbush has roses.

If they stay away from that app, I would do the same thing. That is really disgusting, but at the same time I'm not surprised because pedophiles prey on the weaknesses of children in any way to trick them.

The only way to stay safe, is to take safe precautions to keep yourself safe.

I'm not in the least bit surprised to be honest. And also, parents are supposed to be moderating their children when they're using apps and such. Apps/Phones/Electronics of any sort are not babysitters. Of course, this shit shouldn't be happening in the first place so don't assume I'm shifting the blame completely on the parents.

Wasn't that proven to be just some kind of scary hoax?

Yes, here's the Snopes page on it(it's old as shit to, I think from when i was in High-School over for years ago) so I don't know where White "just now heard about it".

yeah there was a facebook post yesterday by a mother who witnessed her daughter interacting with the app, and the app responding with info about the daughter that it shouldn't have know, and she called the police and they launched an investigation. I guess this is old news apparently, but I just heard about it for the first time yesterday.

Sounds really fishy to me.

I can make a post about Flappy Bird asking me what I'm wearing on Facebook, but it doesn't mean it's true.

But to respond to the title of the topic, it's possible to be children to be safe. Just, y'know, you gotta responsible. Reinforce the idea of saying no to strangers n' whatnot.

i guess i just get a little paranoid when things like this pop up multiple times. i have had some online predator kind of stuff scares in my family. I really hope it truly is a hoax, it looks like it probably is, but the possibilities are frightening.

Nobody is safe in a world like this. You can't even trust your kids to walk home or to school anymore due to pedophile stories. The world is a messed up place. The internet and technology is abused and used the wrong way. Kids these days know EVERYTHING from going on the internet. Kids can't physically or mentally grow up correctly around this kind of stuff. It makes me sick. It sucks because you don't want to limit what your kids can do, but if you don't then they are unsafe in modern times.

I'm pretty sure talking angela stealing info is just a hoax though. It's not impossible for an app like this to appear eventually though.

its definitely scary out there. and it is definitely a catch 22 when it comes to keeping your kids safe and trying to find the right balance of freedom and restriction

No one was ever safe. The world is a place where there is someone who can hurt around you... If there's a bully in school, you're not safe. If there's a car going to fast, you're not safe. No one is ever going to be 100% safe... When people think kids are not safe, they think of the little things but, with all the things we use to make life easier it also makes life more dangerous. Everything can be a dangerous situation, it's just about how you handle it. The more capable you are of handling these situations, the longer you'll live. Unless you have a disease that's not treatable by our medical technique's, then you're screwed.

Yeah, there's an assumption in the question that is not true. They was never a time that children were 'safe' the way you mean. Go back in time as long as you want, and there are predators waiting for you. Rose-tinted glasses are not very helpful, actually. Thinking that people were somehow different once leads into trying to make things 'like they once were' even though it was *never* like that.

I don't believe children or people in general were ever safe, it just disturbs me the new ways people continue to find to hurt people and get what they want.

It just goes to show you how even as useful as much of this technology is how dangerous it can be in the wrong hands. There always were and always will be pedophiles unfortunately which is why when I have kids I will teach them how to defend themselves and be self reliant and to be careful around strangers, but I also at the same time won't scare them to the point where they are afraid of their own shadows.

I agree with that. :)  and even then though there are still things we can't protect them from. :(

Thinking you can protect everyone is foolish. With the huge population and smart minds against less intelligent ones there's a chance someone will get hurt.
