You can try several good programs such as corel video or even sony vegas even adobe will let you try their software free for a couple of weeks even a full month so if your projects its a quick/short you can use those other than that i wouldn't know cause most video editing i use i either bought or torrent.

@Dark Fox, hiya. Just letting you know that since you're looking for software recommendations to help you with something artistic, I've gone ahead and moved your thread to the Creative Resources section. Hope somebody's able to point you to something that'll help :)

I double for OpenShot.

There's also PiTiVi (which I use), but it's Linux-exclusive  :squee:

I don't have any recommendations, but STAY AWAY from Windows Live Movie Maker, I have a PMV that's currently in development hell because the project keeps outputting corrupted WMV files.

You should try Final Cut or Adobe Effects. They're costy but they are worth it.

AFTER EFFECTS IS NOT AN EDITING SOFTWARE PLEASE STOP SPREADING THIS AROUND. if you want to spend money get Premiere pro. Final cut X sucks and 7 no longer exists. Sony Vegas is good if you want to go really cheap. If you want to go free, piracy is the best option.

In my experience, lightworks is a really good editing software. Been using it for about a year now. There's a free version along with a free 30 days of pro version http://www.lwks.com/

However, it does have a HUGE learning curve.

This? Is a good suggestion. However, I frankly couldn't handle the learning curve and found that it crashed too often for me to get used to it.

Still, for free, I can't think of anything better.
