Metemponychosis 1,261 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 I haven't read the other comments yet, but I take the HHD scene with a grain of salt. In my head it was more for comedic effect than canonizing the strength of the character. I'd go with the stove scene for that. But then again... Maud did pulverize an enormous rock. If she can do that and it's due to physical strength, then I'd be alright with Big Mac puling a house. https://www.fimfiction.net/user/32864/Metemponychosis For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out. Never2muchpinkie 211 March 23, 2014 Author Share March 23, 2014 Big Mac's strength is a massive failure of continuity. One day he's straining himself to carry a cake and the next, he's moving tons of stuff. He probably has a lot of inner strength but that doesn't explain why he struggles to carry relatively light things unless he has a problem showing off his strength. Well, you could argue that it wasn't the "heaviness" of the cake to be why he was sweating and his voice sounded strained, but because of how important he knew the cake was and thus was extremely nervous about dropping it. Sindle 40 March 23, 2014 Share March 23, 2014 Actually I have a theory that may just explain this, and why the strength and magical power of a pony varies from episode to episode. I think that a Ponies physical or magical strength varies from day to day, what controls this we can call Biorhythm, it controls the pony's strength, Looking at Rarity in The Art of the Dress from Suited for success we can see that Rarity is able to lift nearly every object used in the process of making clothing from mannequins to ribbons, and this may be because Rarity's Biorhythm was at its, nearly matching Twilight's average Biorhythm. I say average because we've seen what Twilight is capable of, she's lifted entire Ursa Minors, a Water Tower, and living breathing critters, all without breaking a sweat (Though I may be wrong about the water tower and Ursa Minor) But there's just one thing about this; Why did such a magic strong Unicorn have trouble casting the spell that turned anything into Oranges? Well there are two possible explanations to this, either that spell was incredibly difficult to cast for even a pony like here, or her Biorhythm was at a low that day, but the difficult theory has one major hole that pokes its possibility; later in that episode she was able to send numerous Pinkie Pie clones back to the mirror pool without again breaking a sweat, although her horn became very hot from the magical; discharges. So the biorhythm seems to be the answer here. This brings us to items such as the Alicorn Amulet, going back to Magic Duel it was a center plot device giving Trixie incredible Magical Power rivaling or exceeding that of Celestia's or any Alicorn, but why does this happen? We've only seen it once and a Unicorn used it, but what if an Earth Pony or a Pegasus were to wear it? Well certainly the Non-Unicorn wouldn't sprout a horn, as that would just be irrational. Perhaps the Amulet just raises the Biorhythm of the Pony to extraordinary heights allowing an Earth Pony to be possibly ten times stronger than it would be without it, or make a Pegasus an even faster and better flyer. Unfortunately we may never know the effects of the Alicorn Amulet on a Non-Unicorn. But just how come the strongest Pony we have seen on the show be able to pull an entire house and remember we're talking 80,000 to 160,000 pounds based off today's standards here, but Big Mac was able to do it without even a sign of fatigue, but when he lifted a whole stove which compared to a house is significantly lighter he struggled greatly to keep it up as high as he had it, this all goes back to my proposed biorhythm theory and the Alicorn Amulet, in Hearts and Hooves Day Big Mac's biorhythm was assumingly at it's peak plus the Love potion which may have added an additional bonus to that whopping strength already at its possible high, but in Pinkie Apple Pie when Big Mac lifted the stove his Biorhythm was at its lowest possibly on par or even slightly higher than his sister Applejack's, but we may not know what Applejack is capable of lifting as the most we've seen her lift are numerous baskets of apples. So to sum things up for people who want the short version; Biorhythm controls a Pony's strength physically or magically, it varies from day to day reaching highs and lows, items such as the Alicorn Amulet enhance Biorhythm by a large margin, Big Mac is still very strong..And still a sexy beast at that. So I want to hear your thoughts and opinions on this, is Biorhythm controlling Strength and Magic possible? And remember everypony, stay klassy with a capitol K. Sindle Out. 1 I'm not a fat star! Just rounded is all...
Pixel Stick 927 March 23, 2014 Share March 23, 2014 Actually I have a theory that may just explain this, and why the strength and magical power of a pony varies from episode to episode. I think that a Ponies physical or magical strength varies from day to day, what controls this we can call Biorhythm, it controls the pony's strength, (snip) It's an interesting theory - there are some interesting allusions to real-life biorhythms (such as female "periods", etc.) that can explain some behaviors on a completely natural level. But I honestly think it's too complex. In Big Mac's case, I'd be more inclined to think that, aside from the fourth-wall stuff like "The script called for it", his ability to pull a house while under the effects of the love poison has a more direct explanation. You've heard reports of individual people being able to lift cars and city buses when they're under extreme stress (eg. trying to save someone's life). The adrenaline rush both boosts their strength temporarily and dramatically reduces their sensitivity to pain - it's a basic survival instinct. It can also be induced artificially with adrenaline and steroid injections - usually causing significant damage and terrible side-effects in the process (which is why the military doesn't do this with its soldiers). So, consider the fact that Big Mac had literally taken leave of his senses with the love poison. He had just one focus, and nothing at all - certainly no critical or reasoning thought - would stop him. He may also have basically shut off all his sensory inputs dealing with pain, bodily limits, etc., and have become artificially stronger under this poison's effects. It could have had a similar effect on him as a big shot of adrenaline. In both MMMystery and Pinkie Apple Pie, Big Mac was under no such influence - he had his wits about him, and so his strength was more reasonably limited by both his ability to feel (and his natural fear of) pain and injury, and simply his normal physical limitations, unboosted by any artificial source. 1 If you wanna make the world a better place, Take a look at yourself, then make a change. -- Michael Jackson
