Ribbonfree 2,384 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 The vibe is consistent, retro chiptuney gamer, and that's cool. I, uh, do have some critique production wise, but I had a run in with trouble earlier today because apparently I'm very harsh. So I'll give you the option to refuse my critique. Colorful Respawn 399 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 The tune reminds me so much of Play That Funky Music White Boy by Wild Cherry. Was that your inspiration?
Ribbonfree 2,384 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 (edited) That's what I like to hear. The kick is weak and doesn't sit well in the mix. What it actually needs is some high end presence to give it 'oomph', the initial velocity of a kick drum is actually all in the 10kHz+ range. Without it the kick sounds muffled like yours does. Beyond that you also need to turn it up a bit and then balance where it sits in the mix from there. I don't think that snare sample works. One that's a little crisper and less reverby would be preferred in the context of the song. In general not enough is happening at once. You have some cool ideas, like the synth shift at 0:57ish, which is cool. But these synths aren't beefy enough to carry the song on their own, and they get dull fast. Give us some layers, countermelodies going through the song, on top of these existing ideas. Like at 1:10ish, that bass synth. Way too turnt up in the mix, but right here is a good combination of timbres that has good frequency spread. And I also heard Play That Funky Music about halfway through my second listen, ehehe. Spacey 748 March 22, 2014 Author Share March 22, 2014 @, Honestly I just came up with it off the top of my head but yes I hear a hint of that song as well. I try to make come up with something no one else ever has done which is hard to come by at this time and age. @, Dude you make lots of good points. Idk why people wouldn't want you to input on their music. Anyway thanks for letting me know what needs worked on and glad you enjoyed some parts. I'm already working on another tune with lyrics (lyrics not doing so well as tune). I shall add/subtract things you have stated about and see where it takes me on this new tune. Ribbonfree 2,384 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 Yep, hard to not accidentally cop a progression from some famous song nowadays. Something that helps is to have a few reference tracks of a song with a timbre you think is professional and good. While mixing compare your own song to those references and use EQs and compression and stuff to match the timbres between the two to the best of your ability. Spacey 748 March 22, 2014 Author Share March 22, 2014 Sounds like a future plan for future tunes, there is a lot to learn still for me. I keep finding new ways to mix music but you definitely give me ideas. Do you make music yourself? OC Spacer, Request Shop, Deviantart

I keep finding new ways to mix music but you definitely give me ideas. Do you make music yourself? In theory, yes. In actuality I get into my DAW for all of ten minutes, throw a few synths together, get pissed at my inability to write a catchy melody and rage quit to waste the rest of my time on the internet. Spacey 748 March 22, 2014 Author Share March 22, 2014 I feel ya. I get the same way sometimes but I waste all my time on the internet since my school work and job work is mostly on the computer. I usually listen to the same 3 or 4 bars of melody forever unsure what to add next or work into. It's no easy task thats for sure. Applejohn 108 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 I like it, i like it a lot! Its nice to hear that 8-bit style combined with electro, and it sounds great too! I would like to see more music from from you
Satsuki Kiryuin 1,155 March 22, 2014 Share March 22, 2014 The melody's instruments are playing notes that are offkey with each other. Feels very empty. Structure is confusing. Snare sample isn't that good. Buildup is very lackluster. Kick was very weak. I recommend you explore around for more samples to use, percussion makes a big difference in Electronica. I also suggest you work on filling up your music with layers of instruments, so it doesn't sound empty. I think you should also work on your song structure. Perhaps you could go for a classic Pop-ish structure where it goes something like; "Intro -> Chorus -> Verse -> Chorus -> Verse -> Chorus -> Bridge -> Chorus Finale". I think you should be careful with the notes being played because if they're atonal you can tell they're atonal just by listening to the notes. ~Felicity~ @OtarineMusic | Otty's Facebook | Otty's Youtube | Otty's Soundcloud | Otty's Bandcamp
Spacey 748 March 23, 2014 Author Share March 23, 2014 @@Applejohn, Thanks! I plan to give you more soon. @, Thanks for pointing things out and tips. I plan to add a lot more instruments when I get my next songs done thats for sure. I do get that my notes are offkey and will improve on that as well. Perhaps using an octave higher or lower? For percussion, is it better to have an echo type snare or a quick snappy one for electronic type music? Also thanks for telling me a good song structure to go by, I'll definitely be using it. 2 OC Spacer, Request Shop, Deviantart
Satsuki Kiryuin 1,155 March 23, 2014 Share March 23, 2014 is it better to have an echo type snare or a quick snappy one for electronic type music? Depends what you're going for. Most artists tend to sample the 'Pryda Snare' for Big Room and as a transition loop for buildups to drops. Really snappy snares tend to be used in Dubstep tracks, from what I've seen. It really depends on how well a type of percussion blends with the song. If it doesn't fit at all, don't use it. Simple enough.
