movies/tv Mr. Critical reviews: Captain America; The Winter Soldier

Ah, its good to see a comic hero that is actually still fun. Instead of a dark and brooding psychopath. I'm calling you out Murphy. So, how was Captain America 2? It was pretty good. Worth a second watch? Eh, maybe. Depends if you want to look for all the stuff you missed. So, after The Avengers its time Captain America got his sequel. IT was a lot of fun and a must for all marvel fans. Out of the whole film, I had a gripe or two about it but that's for later. Lets start with the good stuff first.

Captain America was fun. Like enjoyably fun. And for a super hero film in this age, that's kinda hard to come by. What with everything needing a dark and gritty feel to it as if you've been beating it and force feeding the film gravel before you sent it out into the world, seeing a fun action movie for once is a great feel to it. Captain America pick up after the Avengers, Cap. taking on missions like fighting off terrorist pirates and rescuing hostages. The effects are fantastic, heavy on explosions and falling buildings guaranteed to keep the attention of the minds of the most horribly stricken with A.D.D. And that's a fac-Ooh, look keys!

The story focuses on Steve Rogers, doing his thing after the whole New York incident. There were references to the other avengers, but never show up. The Cap. comes into contact with a strange assassin with a metal arm and he is working for the nefarious group called Hydra, a group of rogue Nazi's lead by the Red Skull. You know, the guys from the first Captain America film. Anyway, Cap., Black Widow, and Fury are put on SHIELD's number one hit list and are on the run. Explosions and fighting happen, in which they unravel who the mysterious villain is and the ultimate plan of HYDRA. Which is... take over the world. OF COURSE!!! They plan to use three heli-carriers with super assassin guns that can pick people off with impossible accuracy. It's up to Cap., Black Widow, and new hero The Falcon. Which is a man with the coolest jet pack EVAR.

Now, the problems I have are a bit nit-pickish, but what'cha gonna do? The first problem is the villain, the Winter Soldier. They try to play his identity off as a mystery, but during the first act, we know who it is going to be because we focused on that character for so long. Speaking of which. I had an issue with the twists as well. They weren't Shamalan bad, but they were ultimately predictable. "Oh no, Nick fury died! What are we gonna do?" Really, the guy who had more secrets than eve he knows about had died from gun shots... start that timer, cause were going to see how long that lasts. Other than the ability to pull off bad twists like a first day baker, there was way too much going on at once. Mexican stand offs, governmental espionage, infiltration, return of Hydra(Spoiler alert.), and back story. It was a mess. But a fun mess none the less. And wearing a pretty dress for that special effects.

If you want a fun, action packed super hero film(That has some spoilers for the avengers 2 or the new x-men at the end) then by all means check this out. I award Captain America; The Winter Soldier the Pinkie Pie award for fun and enjoyability. I'm Mr. Critical, and we are waiting for our Avengers sequel.

I found the lighting was also a bit funky. It was good for atmospheric purposes, but the darker scenes really hid a lot of detail of the fantastic sets created for the film. I also didn't like that Silvestri's let motif for Capt was only tantalized, but I respect Jackman for doing so. It helps build on the first movies score rather than repeating it, which is what a good sequel is supposed to do.
