Rainbow began to eat her sandwich. She reached over and gave Ariel a gentle pat on the head. Storm came to sit down and started to eat his sandwich. Soon, Thunder came in and sat down followed by Blitz. "So Storm, any luck on tomorrow?" Thunder asked. "Ugh...unfortunately no." Storm answered.

Ariel flicked her ears in response to the pat on the head, giving a cute smile. She then looked over at Storm, then Thunder, then Blitz as they each came to the table and sat. Listening to them converse, she folded her ears when Storm said he'd had no luck with tomorrow. "Does that mean you won't be able to come, after all?" she asked, looking at him with somewhat sad eyes.

"Unfortunately...no...I have to work..." Storm said disappointedly. Storm was very sad that he would miss Thunder's flight competition. Thunder took a bite from his sandwich and so did Storm and Rainbow. "Maybe something might come at the last second..." Rainbow said.

"Aww..." Ariel whined, making it quite apparent how she felt about that with the pout on her face. She had wanted the entire family to be there, as a sort of family outing that would have been especially fun for her; since her former 'family' had been so terrible, she placed more value in this one, treasuring it more than she had ever cherished anything.

"It's okay Ariel...perhaps a miracle might happen and Storm may be able to come out to the competition tomorrow." Thunder stated comforting Ariel. He had finished his sandwich. Meanwhile Storm was still trying to find a way to make it out to the competition.

Ariel looked at Thunder, still with a pout on her face and now a skeptical look in her eyes. She wasn't one that really believed in miracles. Every day she had been with her old family, she hoped a miracle would happen and take her away from that terrible place somehow. But, no... she had to do it herself. She was the one that had to make the choice to flee from that home that didn't really feel like home - and it was mere luck that Thunder had found her. She was lucky, yes. But she believed that miracles had no part in it. After a little while, she finished her sandwich; or rather, the half that she wanted to eat, the other half left untouched.

Thunder continued to comfort Ariel. "Maybe she doesn't believe in miracles because of her hard past..." Thunder thought to himself. "But no matter what I'll make sure she believes in them." He further thought as he got up from the table. "Want me to cover that other half?" Thunder asked Ariel.

"Yeah," Ariel said with a little sigh as she hopped down from her seat. "I'm not hungry anymore..." Clearly, her mood had been affected by the course of the conversation, and her own thoughts about how miracles weren't real, among other things; and being such a delicate young pony, that influenced her appetite as well. She felt more tired than hungry now, and she thought about simply going to bed so that the day would be over with.

Storm had flown out somewhere until he came across Rain Dancer. She said she was off that day but...she could take over his spot for tomorrow. Storm was so happy and flew back to the house quickly. The door swung open and there was Storm. "Great news! Rain Dancer said she could take my shift tomorrow! And you know what that means!" Storm said happily. "Yes! See Ariel, miracles can happen." Thunder stated hugging and nuzzling her lovingly.

Ariel looked up at Thunder, glanced at Storm, and then returned her gaze to Thunder as a small smile appeared on her face. She was still somewhat skeptical of the concept of miracles - but at the least, she was happy that such a stroke of luck happened so that everypony here would be able to attend the competition. And at least that was something she could look forward to now: a fun outing with the entire family.

"Well..." Thunder stated as he looked outside. The sun was nearly setting. "I guess those sandwiches counted as dinner. We should probably hit the hay early tonight. We're gonna have to be up at like 7:45am tomorrow to be at the Colosseum by 8:45 for sign ups and seating." Thunder stated. Rainbow let out a yawn and covered her mouth.

Ariel nodded her head. "Yes, Daddy..." she said. She then glanced at Rainbow before letting out a yawn herself, rubbing her eyes sleepily. She found that she really was tired, even after the nap from earlier - which, honestly, hadn't been much of a nap at all after waking so briefly from it then.

"Who would like to sleep with tonight?" Rainbow asked. Storm had gone to the bathroom to brush his teeth and shower. Thunder was washing the remaining dishes as the sun was setting. The moon was rising as crickets could be heard chirping in the distance.

Ariel yawned once more, finding it a little hard to keep her eyes open as she looked at Rainbow. She was quiet for a few moments as she thought, almost nodding off in the process. "Daddy," she finally said, her soft voice sounding quite sleepy as she rubbed her eyes once more.

"Okay." Thunder stated as he gently picked up Ariel and took her to his room. "I've got an extra toothbrush in here. You need to brush your teeth so you won't get any cavities." Thunder stated as he put some toothpaste on his toothbrush and brushed his teeth. Two minutes passed and he was done. "Your turn Ariel." Thunder stated.

Ariel nodded, still rather sleepy, though she would do what she was told. She always did what she was told, if only because she still had the lingering fear of facing someone's wrath lest she refuse. Picking up the extra toothbrush in question, she put some toothpaste on it and started to brush her teeth. After two minutes, she finished brushing her teeth. "Okay, done," she said, before letting out another yawn.

"Alright..." Thunder said with a yawn. "It's bedtime." Thunder stated as he climbed into his bed. "We've got a big day tomorrow." Thunder said as he plopped himself down and waited for Ariel to come next to him. He had gone under the covers already and an open spot was there for Ariel.

Ariel walked to the bed, fluttering her wings to get up onto the bed. She then crawled under the covers, comfortably settling herself next to Thunder and curling up as she liked to do. "Night, Daddy," she said, already starting to drift off to sleep the moment she closed her eyes.

"Good night...my little Ariel." Thunder stated as he wrapped his arm around Ariel and drifted off to sleep. He gently nuzzled Ariel as he closed his eyes. Storm turned off the last light of the house and it was dark. Only the stars above shed some light. Thunder was dreaming about the competition the next day.

By that time, Ariel had already fallen asleep. At first, she dreamed of watching Thunder win the flight competition... but soon, those dreams evolved into something else. The images that had showed up earlier appeared to her again - the faces of her former parents. It was almost like a tamer version of the terrifying nightmares she used to have: She was lost and wandering in the woods, and something was after her. Except instead of monsters, it was her parents; looking for her, trying to track her down.

 

It was early the next morning when she woke from the dream with a jolt, shivering. That was the second time she had seen her former parents in her dreams... did it mean something? Or was it simply the lingering fears in her subconscious haunting her?

Thunder could feel Ariel shivering while he was sleeping. It was around 3am. Four hours and forty five minutes remained for the night. Thunder woke and gave a gentle nuzzle to Ariel to assure that everything was going to be okay and not be afraid. He hugged Ariel a little closer.

Ariel gave a soft whimper as she clung to Thunder tightly, continuing to shiver. She didn't want to sleep anymore; she didn't want to fall back asleep only to encounter her former parents in her dreams again. She had had enough of thinking about them, yet it seemed that they didn't want to leave her dreams alone for some reason now... of course, perhaps it was merely a fluke that she had dreamed about them twice in a row, but she had certainly been frightened enough to believe otherwise.

A white light appeared in Ariel's dream. "Away with you!" Luna shouted to the images of Ariel's parents as she used a cleansing spell to clear out all of the bad thoughts from Ariel's mind. Thunder pulled in Ariel to where his heart was. Hopefully his heartbeat would calm her down.

Her breathing was ragged and frantic at first, her own heart racing. But as she rested her head on Thunder's chest and listened to his heartbeat, she slowly started to calm down. Having felt Luna's touch influence her dreams once more, the princess's voice echoing faintly at the edges of her subconscious, she eventually drifted back to sleep, her dreams returning to a peaceful state as she dreamed of the competition once more.

Soon, 7:45 came. Thunder's classical alarm went off and Thunder woke up. He gently nuzzled Ariel. "Time to wake up." He said softly, gently flipping Ariel belly up. Rainbow slowly got out of bed and so did Storm and Blitz. Thunder waited for Ariel to wake up.
