Considering the diversity of characters seen in the show (which is a strength of the series, IMHO), I would be thrilled if, say, once a season for the rest of the show's run, they did an episode focused on a background character. Big Mac's been the one lucky enough to get the most characterization out of all of them, I think, with Cheerilee a close second, but if they did one for Derpy, Lyra and Bon Bon, Doctor Whooves, etc, I think that would be fabulous. I'm not suggesting handing the whole show off to fan service, just that once a season time would be great, though.

'Course, I doubt they'll do it, and all things considered I'm happy they gave Derpy as much acknowledgement and screen time as they did in, say Rainbow Falls.

 

EDIT: And, since i totally missed what section of the forum this was in when I posted, because I got caught up in the rest of the discussion, I'll say, cute picture of Derpy, too!

Thats what we have the side characters for, mostly its the CMC but characters like the cakes, or zecora could have an episode and that would make more sense than undestablished characters 

Something that I really want to see with the background characters is some particular things that you can't do with the mane cast and side cast, and that's romance. A very special episode with some Lyra/Bonbon shipping anypony?

I highly doubt they would do any same sex relationships, the uproar from soccer moms would be ridiculous

and besides rarity and hell even AJ have had run in with romance

No no no, you wanna talk taboo in TV? Shipping the main/mane cast with anything is a big no no. It messes up the dynamic and makes the show strange, especially in cartoons made for kids. One shot romances with characters that never/rarely come back, that's fine, nopony cares, but a constant new face in an established cast? No, not gonna happen. You can get away with that in soaps and romantic based TV, but not in an adventure cartoon. Shows that do that ALWAYS fail. But, you can ship people who are unimportant to the plot, AKA background ponies. Mr and Miss Cake, good to go, Shining armor and Candace, great. But if they touch the mane cast, the makers of the show will be torn apart by angry super fans.

 

Now if MLP wanted to make an episode addressing LGBT and bigotry against it, making characters like Lyra and Bonbon be together would be both widely accepted by the fans, and a choice that wouldn't have the constant consequence of having the mane dynamic be changed. It would be brilliant.

It would be awesome to get an episode about her.  I could see it being like the short Fluffle Puff skits where Derpy doesn't talk, and she just interacts with ponies.  Have Rainbow Dash be the only one to call her Derpy as it's a nickname she gave her while others call her Ditzy. 

 

Moral wise, I would just want it to show that even though Derpy is clumsy she can be treated like any other pony of Ponyville.  Just because an individual is different doesn't mean they should be treated poorly or with kid gloves.
