Some fanfic cover art; opinion?

So there's this fanfic I've (barely) been writing and working on. I've kinda been moving slowly, but still steadily adding to it now and then. Well, today I tried my hand at doing some cover art.

I'm far from a professional, or even notably good in a number of senses of the word, but I consider myself to be at a level I can at least attempt to do something of my own. I don't want to use something made by someone else for this, if y'all can understand that.

 

Anyways. I'm no stranger to MLP fanfiction, and I've noticed that I myself judge a good deal of fics by their picture. If it looks like a self insert, I don't trust it as much. If the art is beautiful, I'm more inclined to have a high opinion of the story. If there's nothing art-wise and it's blank, I judge it almost entirely by subtle bits of writing (grammar/choice of words).

 

 

 

So right, what I wanted to ask...

 

Does this work as cover image? Does it reflect a certain way, positively or negatively (or neutrally)? 

 

Also, does anyone have any criticism on the image itself? I made some choices with this because I didn't know what a better approach would be.

Wow! The first thing that comes to my mind, of course, is that I want to read the story you're illustrating. ^U^ I love the pose, and the wings look rather realistic which adds to the impact of the pic. And the lines on the moon are really eye-catching; they truly look like they're carved into the moon!

(I also like that her tail is covering her plot, so that the older bronies wouldn't get distracted...okay moving on.)

 

The only thing I have a minor issue with is the writing on the moon; I can't read what it says even on zooming in. The only words I can make out are Song on the top, and something like Dreams Heed Thy Song on the bottom...was this intentional?

All in all, this is a very nice work of art, and an excellent cover image for a fanfic.

Wow! Thank you so much for the detailed comment! I love when people transcribe a good bit of their thoughts. Always means more than "it's pretty", haha. 

Slight note, the 'moon' is actually meant to be a silver pendant of sorts, which she picks up in the story somewhere--but given the image, I kinda did place it where the moon would normally fit into the image. They're close enough though regardless, and it does look like a psuedo-moon. 

 

^{And yeah, haha. I don't really want her to be known for her plot.} 

 

Also... it was 'kinda' intentional? Since it's an element of the story, the writing was more a means of identification than anything else. Especially since part of it gets clipped by her limbs regardless.  It's meant to say "May thy song keep thee dreams, and in thee dreams heed thy song"

I think it looks really good, way better than I can ever in an eternity ;p. It actually looks quite good, It has a very stylized and realistic to an extent look. And for a fanfic cover art I think that can work pretty well.

 

Its hard to make any super detailed judgements without being aware of the fanfic and what will go on, but I think it's gonna work pretty well .

It's basically about a parentless bat pony during the years that follow Luna's banishment and stuff regarding the bat ponies race that Luna created.

Yeah, I don't honestly typically bother with the art of a fic as the first thing. I'm more concerned with the actual fanfic.

 

I was just saying it might help with judging if the picture in general works. And judging from your short description of the fanfic I'd say the art is fitting.

I suppose I'm of a slightly different group then.  I try not to judge fics by their image, but it's the first thing to shape my view of the fic, sadly.
