Shining Armor's armor

It doesn't take the most attentive person ever to notice that Shining Armor's suit of armor is a different color than everypony else in the guard. the question is, why? is it supposed to be indicative of his rank? another reason? why?

I assumed it's a family heirloom, since it got the sixpointed star on it and still got it in S4.

It is not only a family relic (as he exposed to the audience during the canterlot wedding) but the color would also be indicative of his rank as captain. And since the guard seems to be based on a medieval army, higher ranking officials would often wear armor that was of family value as a symbol of respect to their forbears, and their status as having a lineage of power.

I think that was just the badge he wore over his uniform. Not saying the armour isn't though.

It could be either or. It could be just the badge, or they could have been alittle more medieval correct and had him wearing heraldic armor,
