Steam etiquette

Something I have been noticing lately, people who invite me to a game without prior conversation, without bothering to ask if I have the time, or if I was in the mood to play. This happens more often then I want to, pop up with a invite to a game.

It's kind of rude when you just invite without asking, ask first, then when I say yes, send me an invite. Not this, it's annoying. Because I often don't have time.

No, I am not going to shut down Steam for it. I have time to maybe chat, not play a game.

I'm guilty of doing this a couple times, but only when I was trying to get people to join one of the weekly TF2 meetups.

Even more annoying than this is when people see it says you've started a game, and they see that as the opportunity to try to strike up a conversation; just when you've launched a game and you're likely to want to focus on it.

I can get this, and I am not angry, but I've had people who invite me, then strike up a conversation 5 minutes later asking why I didn't join, so it's annoying when I am specifically targeted alone, yet kept in the dark. I wouldn't blame someone for inviting everyone they knew hoping some would bite, but there are just song who do this every two days and get all mad at me when i decline.

This annoys me a lot, too. I don't know about you, but it gives me a sense that they don't really want to talk to me, they just want at least one person on their team who they know isn't an ass and will cooperate with them. It just seems so much more polite to start a conversation. Even something simple, like "hey (name), I was just about to play some L4D. Wanna join?"

90% of the time, I'll say yes, since I really only start Steam when I'm intending to play games, but people should still ask. Gaming on Steam is very social for me. Since I live (well, used to live) in the middle of nowhere, I'd get on Steam and play with someone with voice chat up as a substitute for hanging out with them when I couldn't actually go hang out with them for whatever reason.

I guess it's a bit flattering that people like playing games with me, but I still strikes me as being rude.

The people who do such things gets removed. Simple as that.

Have removed like 8 friends because of that.

ALL the time on League of Legends.

I'm surprised. Whenever I get on LoL, all my friends are either offline or ingame. Unless we planned it ahead of time, of course.

REALLY LATE REPLY TO POSSIBLY OUTDATED BLOG

uhhh

I dunno if this applies to the people you're talking about, but

To me, sending an invite means implicitly asking you if you can. If you don't have time, then ignore it, simple as that.

From your answer to Roop though, I imagine some of them don't see things from the same perspective. Those aren't friends then, and as others said, should be removed.

But the others, the ones who invite you without explicitly asking BUT don't get mad at you for refusing... they aren't being rude, they're just saving time, even if it's just a minute.
