I suppose it IS a instinctual thing to do, though. You can't really blame society for being natural: be idiotic try to fit in and find success in the popularity, or something like that. No idea what I'm talking about, so ignore it if my ramblings are highly inaccurate.

People don't consciously want conformity. People are weirded out by the unusual.

That's just how it is. The conformists are deemed normal, while the ones who don't conform and try to "be cool" are considered "weird". Don't like the current wubdupflubstep/TV show/whatever that's trending? That's tough, and the fact you have your own tastes and don't pretend to like things because it's "the cool thing to do" makes you a PBR-chugging, flannel shirt-wearing (ironically of course) hipster.
