How would one get started with forum RPs?

I didn't know which section to post this in on the forums, and it's more than likely detailed somewhere, but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed so I don't really know where to look.

Anyway, how would one get started with forum RPs?

I've wanted to do forum RPs ever since my last forum I used to be a regular at, but that desire (and much of my desire to be a art of that forum) was dashed when the RP mods said they were afraid I would try to stray away from cannon in RPs because I added some dark background elements for my Rainbow Dash application.

I'm going to digress a second and say that's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. If I'm applying for Rainbow Dash to only allowed to be used by me, then why am I not allowed to tweak her background? It's never going to leave the forums, and it doesn't change anypony's headcannons.

And secondly, isn't going away from cannon what you're supposed to do in RPs? You don't see pony on dragon shipping or Mayor Mare lusting after fillies in cannon, but you see that stuff in RPs, so why wouldn't I be allowed to skew the RP to some dark event that's never going to happen outside of that particular RP?

[/digress]

So yeah, I'd like to start forum RPing again because I really like this place! Could somepony kindly direct me on how to get started and what the etiquette is? Like I said, I don't know where to look and I don't want to make a bad first impression by posting in the wrong section or walking in uninvited to somepony's RP

Thanks in advance.

First you'll need an OC, or character. These go in the Character Database...I think. I forget :P. Next go over to OOC and Planning. This is where all the RPs are started, planned, or just out of character discussion. It's pretty easy after that. Just go into a thread or start your own.

Would I be able to RP as Rainbow Dash? Or are they locked to some kind of first come first serve kind of thing?

I'm not entirely sure... I'm pretty sure you could, but I am just gonna say this - I would SERIOUSLY consider making an OC instead. Using an already canon character often comes off as... lazy and unoriginal. Besides, having an OC is awesome! If you need an idea of how to make an OC, check mine out! Her name is Curly Swirl. :) But I'm pretty sure you can be RD if you like to (heck, she's awesome, who wouldn't wanna RP as her? XD)

We actually have two sections of roleplaying here on the forums, the Equestrian Empire and the Normal section. Nearly all roleplays are infact done in the normal section, and literally anything can happen in that section.
Like currently I'm dming the bolt academies, a Human rp, a changeling hunt, and all that kind of stuff. You can have any character in these sections, but if you want to get into a good rp, have a nice and well balanced character that isn't over powered, and usually you need to have your own original character (oc) to play in these rps.

The Equestrian Empire Section is for closer to cannon rps, where people have fixed characters and play as those characters, usually cannon, and only those characters in that section. There is a huge archive that you can look into for information about the EQE and how to apply for characters and such.
But Rainbowdash has already been taken, sorry about that.

RPing as canon is a touchy thing, because a lot of people already have expectations for you because you are using a character they already recognize and possibly even obsess over. You can stray from canon and I have done so in the past when people were fine with it, but if people want canon to adhere to canon you're outta luck. RPing is playing with the imagination of other humans, so there's going to be conflicts on interest and vision all the time. You have to adjust, adapt, and keep looking for RPers whose style you agree with.
