Atheism and Morals

Titan Rising

So often I hear atheists say how stupid it is to believe in any form of God or religion and how they are the direct cause of all the worlds problems. Then in the next paragraph they'll be spewing some crap about how humans have some moral obligation to maximize pleasure - meaning healthcare + foodstamps + all that progressive civil rights causes. No.

If you are an atheist, then there is no such thing as morals. There is no such thing as good and bad and labeling humans as such is completely asinine. If humans are simply animals then you need to be consistent and shape your beliefs as such. I don't think any sane person would label any action taken by a dog as "good" or "bad" so don't do it to humans either

Quit calling racists, thieves, killers, and rapists bad - because if you are an atheist there is no such thing as good and bad. Advocate the belief that they're animals. If you want to kill them or lock them in prison because you don't feel safe then say that, but don't call them bad or their actions bad.

So to conclude, if you are an atheist I would appreciate it if you did not act as if anything is good or anything is bad and just lived your own life not having an opinion on anything because the only thing that should really matter to you is attaining physical and mental pleasure in the moment through any means possible

Thanks

Such hate and bias.

Athiesm just means somebody doesn't believe god/whatever exists. Athiesm doesn't mean "Misanthropic hedonist". What if I walked up to you and said all Christains are gullible and believe in fairy tales? It wouldn't be polite, would it? Because you're doing a similar thing here.

I'm an Athiest, and I believe in right and wrong. The fact I don't believe god exists doesn't mean that part of my brain is fried.

I'm just going to hold back and end my comment here.

Atheism is the rejection of the beliefs of Gods or teachings of religious Prophets. There is absolutely nothing in the definition that states that you have to cast away morals too. Morals and Religion are two different sections. You can have morals without believing in a God. Me? I don't believe in any God, only pure nature itself, and I do believe in an afterlife. So, I'm an agnostic. But still, I dislike the Republican Party. That doesn't make me not an agnostic or atheist. It just simply means I don't agree with their ideals. Nothing more, nothing less.

I think the point he was trying to make here is that without a god or a creator, there is no one to establish what's right or what's wrong. What you think is right and wrong can differ drastically from what someone else thinks is wrong. Take, for example, Charles Manson. I doubt he thought committing all those murders was wrong, and without a higher being to dictate what right and wrong is, who's to Manson was in fact wrong?

On an unrelated note, Merry Christmas, Charlie Manson!

Everyone commenting here has missed the point.

He wasn't saying atheists can't discern right from wrong. He was saying atheism (more like, the naturalistic worldview) can't account for the existence of objective morality. Thus there is no right and wrong within atheism (once again, more specifically the naturalistic aspect) unless you live inconsistent with your own worldview.

Of course, you make a bunch of angry responses when atheism is criticized, and everyone sidesteps the point at hand.

Go figure.

I agree with you. Logically, atheists, such as myself have no grounds to make moral statements (neither do the religious, but that's an argument for another day). We do so anyway. Why? Simple. Humans are not logical. We are not rational. We are subject to conditioning, genetic predisposition, emotion, bias, and just plain foolishness. We put away criminals to create a stable, safer society, but why is this desirable? We are afraid of them. All moral claims are irrationally based in emotion. I wrote a paper about this, and if anyone wants to read it, I would be happy to share it.
