Why my AP Calculus class is the best....plus more.

Most people are probably thinking "Ew Calculus, why would you ever even take that? Math is stooooopid." In fact that's what most of my school seems to think. Aside from the 14 of us who were stupid brave enough to take the class. In addition to Calculus being extremely difficult to comprehend it's also a block period at my school, meaning it takes up 2 out of our 7 periods every day. Furthermore it also happens to be the last two periods, or rather the time of the day when no one wants to do anything. So pretty much the worst time to have a class.

Now, for why this is actually the greatest class in the world....

I've always been fairly good at math (once I understand a concept) and as a result have been able to enjoy it. I love the small thrill of getting an answer right to a problem that I've been working on, furiously writing equations down and plugging numbers into my calculator. My ex boyfriend always laughed at me when I did my homework at his house because I would sit there yelling at a problem I couldn't understand and then I would jump up and scream (literally) if I got the answer right.

....oops. Got a little off topic. So not only is my calc class filled with a variety of really awesome people (including 3 of the 5 Valedictorians) but we have a lot of fun. I don't know if other schools do this but our AP classes in our school have a tradition of having "snack day" once a week. And if you forget, you get killed. Our snack day is on a day where we have a weird schedule and we all go to the first period of calc before lunch instead of after like usual so you really don't want to forget lest you be torn to pieces by hungry math students.

However, the best part of the class is all the youtube videos we watch EVERY DAY. We always get the teacher sidetracked because he loves watching funny/cool youtube videos. We've watched everything from nfl bad lipreadings to cat videos. In fact today he let us watch a video in between every problem we worked on - since we're just reviewing for the AP test now - and we only made it through 3 problems before we just watched videos for the rest of the class period. By now I'm caught up on every viral video I could ever need to see, plus a few extra.

The other advantage is that I'm over level 500 on 4 pics 1 word because my math teacher is a genius at figuring those out. So whenever I get stuck we just pass my phone around the room until someone gets it.

Maybe I am crazy for taking the class, especially since I don't really need it for the field I'm going in to, but I think it's been one of the best experiences of my high school career...not to mention I have an A in the class so I can't be doing too bad. wink.png

Sounds like a fun class, I'm hoping to take it next school year in 11th grade. I love mathematics. In fact, I tried to teach myself Calculus when I was 12. It was like trying to read an alien language at first, especially since I didn't even know Algebra back then. After a few years of sporadically reading about it here or there I began to become familiar with some of the basic ideas of Calculus, which will help me to develop a sound understanding of it in the AP class and beyond.

Math in general is not my cup of tea as I can barely even do Pre Algebra much less AP Calculus but we all have different things we are good at and enjoy. And the teacher sounds cool, it is nice to break up some of the monotony with a something like random youtube videos.

For some fucked up reason, I'm actually looking forward to taking Calculus. I actually like math. >_>

I hated algebra but I loved geometry.  I was able to split the difference in Trig.  I never took calculus though, just enough math courses to get me into college.  MissDerpy, you're a braver person than I am.

Have you ever watched '80s Chipmunks cartoons?  When the Chipettes' new legal guardian is reading them a fairy tale, Jeanette is yawning and reading a book on calculus.

Geometry was actually my worst math class, I still don't know how I got through it freshman year. And I have watched that but I don't remember that part but that's pretty funny. :P
