I HATE Biased Game Reviews

One of the things that annoys me the most is when a game reviewer lets personal bias get in the way of fairly assessing a game. A prime example of this is the episode youtuber JonTron dedicated to the game Starfox Adventure. Now, I thoroughly enjoy JonTron's videos generally, and feel that he is a very entertaining and talented youtuber. But, in this video, it was obvious that he set out with the purpose of making this game look bad. He completely focused on the worst aspects of the game, such as the repetitiveness that occasionally shows up in the gameplay, the voice acting during cutscenes, the annoyingly simple minigame that appears in the first level, and the fact that models in the game tend to be rather ugly. Beyond that, he constantly criticizes it for being different from Starfox 64. He also spends time complaining that the in-game sound effects are the stock sort of sound effects that can be found in nearly any game. Now, I'm not saying that one shouldn't talk about the negative aspects of a game, it's something a reviewer needs to do in order to fairly review a game. But, JonTron didn't mention any of the positive aspects. In fact, he never mentioned such important gameplay aspects as the bosses, the environments, or even the combat. Worse still, when he does mention one of the positive aspects of the game, the controls, he implies that it's a negative aspect, simply because the controls are similar to Ocarina of Time's; I fail to see how that could possibly be perceived as negative aspect, as Ocarina of Time is known for having a wonderful control scheme. He then goes on to criticize the game for having a tutorial, saying instead that it should just come out and say that the controls are the same as in Ocarina of Time; This is completely ridiculous, considering that most Starfox games have a very different feel from The Legend of Zelda, and will therefore attract a different audience, many of whom have probably never played Ocarina of Time. This entire video was obviously meant to make the game look bad, and I know people who have been turned off the game simply because JonTron based the episode off his bias against the game for not feeling similar to Starfox 64. It's a truly despicable moment in JonTron's otherwise wonderful video list.

Wish I could brohoof this more than once :L

I also like JonTron's videos very much, but this one video about Star Fox Adventure also itched me a little... It's very hard to find accurate and generally good game reviewers.

Thats the same guy that didn't have Link to the Past in his top 10 snes games lol. Hes just real opinionated, and I agree I liked the concept of Starfox Adventures (I have it but never played through it). He's just mad that it wasn't the kind of starfox game he wanted

I would definitely love to see a new Starfox Assault type game on the WiiU though, I think with the controller it could work really well and with a good online support and multiplayer it would be awesome. If they did it right and made it really competitive

This review of a review i biased. You wouldn't be mad if you didn't like the game either. You should really think things through and be realistic.

JonTron isn't a serious reviewer. You should know that. His purpose is to make funny content, not to seriously review a game. If you want real game reviews, go watch IGN or something.

Honestly, every review is biased, especially for things of a creative medium. And here's what I think. If you want the most unbiased review, read a lot of reviews and stick with the facts that seem consistent. And even then, I'd say it's more important to find reviewers who happen to like the same stuff as you. If they like it, you'll like it.

So, I recommend you just find a reviewer who has the same taste as you, or just go around and collect facts. And you know what? Why not play a demo. I mean, I sometimes pirate a game and play the first ten to 2 hours (depending on the length of the game) if a demo is unavailable, to see if it's any good. You're the best reviewer for yourself.

Okay, here's my piece on the subject.

First off, yes I have played and beaten star fox adventures, and no I didn't have fun doing it.

Moving on, what aspect of the game are you trying to defend? The only truly enjoyable portions of that game are the arwing segments, and those are still kinda iffy. (in my opinion) then you have what makes up the bulk of the game, running around places, looking for "keys" to get to other places, a tried and true gameplay mechanic that can be fun when done right, this is not an example of it being done right. You have to interact with bland, uninteresting characters that, after that specific event, stop being important to the story.

The combat, I can see Rare wanted to take star fox into a new direction with the whole "walk on ground" thing but can you really say you had fun with the way combat way handled? It was pretty much just jiggling the c-stick in different directions untill the other guy dropped dead.

Rare took a gamble when they decided to try and reimagine fox, I can respect that, but the game was executed poorly and was trying to be Zelda, but used nothing more then Zelda's, "you need this to go here." mechanic, but didn't write the story around that aspect. Did you really feel a sense of accomplishment when you dug the root out to give to the mammoth, who in return, farted and then got out of your way, and stopped being important? Did you really?

As I said these are my opinions, but I do have to ask, are you defending this game because you enjoy the gameplay, or cause you like the character of Fox? If you thourghly enjoy the game then, disregard what I just said and don't let anyone try to sway your opinion one way or the other, but what part of that game makes you want to go in and replay it?

HOW DARE HE DISLIKE A GAME YOU LIKED FOR VALID REASONS.

THAT BASTARD

That's not what I'm saying at all. I have no problem with a person having different opinions on a game than me. And I never said that I liked the game in this blog entry, because it wasn't about my personal opinion on the game, the focus was just me ranting about a certain video which was a prime example of something that bothers me. In fact, that's the point of this entire blog; If you'll look at my introductory entry, I specifically say that this blog is just for me to talk about whatever happens to be on my mind.

Okay, here's my piece on the subject.

This entry isn't meant to defend the game, it's simply me providing my opinion on JonTron's video, and by association similar videos. Had I written this entry with the intention of defending the game, you wouldn't have to ask these questions, because I would've mentioned the points about it I like within the blog entry. I am at the moment ill-equipped to either defend or damn the game, as it has been far too long since I played it. Because of this, I am actually neutral in opinion, and I fail to see anything in the blog entry to suggest otherwise. I chose this video specifically, because I'm neutral. Watching it, as a neutral party, I noticed that JonTron was obviously trying to make the game look bad, which I simply can't stand. Also, I'd like to correct you on one other small point; Rareware wasn't trying to reimagine Fox; Starfox Adventures started as an original game by Rareware for the N64 called Dino Planet which happened to star a fox as the protagonist.

Nintendo approached them and proposed that they revise certain sections so that they can reasonably include Fox McCloud as the main character.

This review of a review i biased. You wouldn't be mad if you didn't like the game either. You should really think things through and be realistic.

Like I said in response to Red, I am neutral on this game as it's been too long since I played it and I remember very little. I simply saw the video and noticed that JonTron was intentionally making the game look bad by rarely mentioning aspects that would be considered positive, and even when he does trying to make them seem negative. I'm curious as to why so many people think I like the game and am trying to defend it in this blog entry; the former is not necessarily true, and the latter is definitely not true. I'm just calling the video as I see it.
