• Physical Description

  Pencil Pouch is a purple unicorn with a curly, camera-colored mane. She has dark green eyes, a light pink magic aura, and a pink pocket Cutie Mark with art supplies inside of it. The art materials represent her artistic abilities and her use of different mediums and the stitching on the pocket represents her ability to problem-solve.

• Backstory

  Pencil Pouch, ever since she knew how to use a pen and paper, was fascinated by art. Art was a way to put all her thoughts down into a coherent message. She earned her Cutie Mark very early in her in her foalhood, much to the dismay of her younger sister. She was very grateful to learn of her purpose in life so soon, but she was unsure exactly how to use her talents in the real world.

  Despite her cheery and adorable personality, Pencil had struggled with self esteem issues for many of her school years and onwards. Sometimes, she believed that she was either not doing enough for ponies or doing too much. She was also very impatient, which can only heighten those issues. Thankfully, her friends and family constantly reminded her that she was appreciated and that it was okay to make mistakes so long as she tried to learn from them.

  Mistakes, ironically, were the driving force in Pencil’s artwork. Every time she drew, she would use what she learned to improve her next piece. She would occasionally try new techniques which led her to forming her own style. As she grew a bit older, ponies began to take notice of her work and wanted some of it for their own. Pencil loved drawing for others more than anything and would happily continue doing so. She knew, however, that it was unwise to give a lot of drawings away for free, so she began charging for them. Her workshop soon turned into a small business, which meant she could do her dream job.

• Key Moments

  - Pencil got her Cutie Mark at the age of six when she shared her first drawing. She shared it with a classmate and felt very happy for both herself and for making the classmate happy.

  - Pencil learned a lot about arcade game coding and game strategies from her sister, Frame Clip. Although she can’t use her skills for her career, she is always eager to help out Frame at the arcade.

  - At a time where Pencil was feeling extremely low about herself, she thought up of an alter-ego named Pocket Knife. Pocket Knife is a very pale and disgruntled version of herself. The knife was metaphorical as it was more of a personality thing than an actual intention to cause harm. Pocket Knife, in a weird way, was like a mental coach since all of her thoughts paralleled Pencil’s. Despite how strange this coping method was, it seemed to work. Having an alter ego yell retorts in her head convinced most of her bad thoughts to go away.

  - Pencil met her best friend, Granite Rose, when she was 6 and he was 8. They met at a summer camp and bonded after bonding over doing sidewalk chalk together.

• Personality

  Pencil is a different pony depending on who she is around. Around friends and family she knows or is comfortable with, she is very bubbly and cheery. It is easy for her to get excited, especially when she’s had a lot of sugar. Around ponies she doesn’t know as well, she is very quiet but polite. No matter who she is around, she can occasionally stumble on her words or forget what she’s saying entirely. Ponies often tell her that she talks too fast.

  She can struggle every now and then with self esteem issues which causes her to be extremely sad, distressed, and irritable. She works on these issues as best she can but sometimes, all she can do is wait for the feelings to pass.

  Pencil makes it a goal to be as kind as possible whether that’s through words, gifts, or some other means of affection or care. Sometimes ponies don’t see her kindnesses, which makes her think she failed, but a majority of the time, ponies see her as a very nice pony.

  Pencil adores cute and lovable things but also enjoys things that are dark and creepy, which makes her family believe she’s crazy. Pencil assures her family and herself that her interests are only her interests, not her personality. Pencil’s interests can be very vast at times which she believes has the power to strengthen her art.

  When Pencil isn’t working on commissions, she likes to write stories for herself. Her favorite stories to write are the ones that are very deep and emotional. Writing gives her a chance to learn about things she otherwise would not have the time to, such as mental illness.

   Sparkly and Pencil, though surprised by the outcome of the tournament, were glad that Thundy was able to achieve getting his pure heart at last. It felt like something really good came out of this fight as opposed to the majority of them, which only stirred chaos. The two mares simply sat and listened for a while, absorbing their atmosphere. For once there was a semblance of peace, which made the two feel relaxed.
   Should I try to draw again? Pencil wondered.
   She felt somewhat inspired in this moment and did not want that to go to waste. Even though she still had a few doubts about herself, she was going to try something. She slowly pulled out a pencil from her saddlebag and brought it to the last page she worked on. Her focus suddenly shifted when Alhimar announced that he had to leave in a hurry.
   “Oh, you’re leaving?” Pencil asked with a sad expression. “Well, I understand. Family obligations are important and if you said you were gonna do something, it’s best not to back out of it.” As soon as those words came out of her mouth, she felt a twinge of irony as she thought about the many times she wanted to give up on her commission.
   “You are a very honorable zebra, Alhimar. May you continue to thrive in all that you do in your hometown. Perhaps someday Pencil and I can visit.” Sparkly told him with a friendly smile.
   Sparkly took a business card from him with a wing while Pencil held a car in her magic. Sparkly tucked it gently between her feathers while Pencil stored hers in a pocket on her saddlebag. She then took out her contacts book and began to scribble furiously.
   “Stand back a minute.” she told everyone nearby.
   With as much focus as she could muster, she pictured the black spiral notebook in her mind down to every last detail. She imagined the crisp white pages, the smooth black leather, and the shiny grey coils holding it all together. With a poof, an identical notebook appeared, only instead of multiple clients’ names, it only said “Pencil Pouch” and “Sparkly”. Sparkly didn’t have a book yet but Pencil would make her one later.
   “I mainly use this for commissions but it’s an effective method of contact, too. All you have to do is write my name on a page and then write your message. It’ll immediately show up in my book. Don’t worry about running out of pages, I included the instructions for a page duplication spell on the back.” Pencil told Alhimar as she passed him his copy.
   Once Alhimar left, Sparkly and Pencil were left with vials. Sparkly could sense that they had something to do with inner strength. She looked at Pencil calmly and said,
   “We should take them. I sense they will do great things for our hearts and our minds.”
   Pencil hesitantly reached out for her own vial. Before she drank it, she made a brief toast with Sparkly before she gently sipped the fluid. Within her and Sparkly shined great strength, creativity, and courage.
   “This potion has me thinking…” Pencil whispered.
   Sparkly leaned in carefully to listen better.
   “My client wanted me to show him something he’s never seen before, right? Something special and unique. I think…I’m beginning to realize what it is. It isn’t new worlds or advanced magic or anything like that at all. It’s all the unique friends I’ve made in this town. They’re not just unique as in species, they’re unique in personality, kindness, and compassion. I…think I know what to draw now.” Pencil continued to whisper. She felt a deep sense of calm she hadn’t felt in a while. No, not calm, but peace. Peace was beginning to develop in Pencil’s heart. She had not only solved her problem, but she realized why she came to Friendshire in the first place.
   “That’s wonderful, Pencil Pouch. Once you finish, I would love to see it before you send it off. I have a feeling it’s going to be one of your best commissions.” Sparkly whispered back.
   Pencil smiled at the compliment then quickly stood up. She cleared her throat to get everyone’s attention. She wasn’t very loud, so Sparkly also cleared her throat to make sure everyone heard. Looking around at everyone, Pencil took a quick deep breath before she made her announcement.
   “H-hey, there’s something I need to tell you guys. So, uh, the whole reason I was sent here was to make ‘a commission like never seen before’. I struggled for days to figure out what I was supposed to draw and I almost gave up entirely. However, now that I’ve thought of something, I know what I’m supposed to draw.
   Each one of you is so special and unique. I’m proud to call you all my friends. I think you guys are what my client was looking for all along. A unique set of friends from all over, united in one small town. Hehe, it’s a bit silly I didn’t come to this realization before, b-but I didn’t have much confidence in myself before. It’s thanks to ponies like Sparkly Green who helped me regain it.
   Now that I know what to draw, I must say that I’m no longer needed for. The deal was to find something to draw here then return to my hometown, Sire’s Hollow. I’m gonna miss you guys and I had a lot of fun here, but now it’s time for me to move on. Time to go back home.” she announced proudly.
   Pencil looked to everyone one last time then gave them a gentle wave goodbye. She hoisted her saddlebag onto her back then trotted away from the tournament, Sparkly following close behind.

   “So, what’re you gonna do?” Pencil asked.
   “Why, join you in Sire’s Hollow, of course! I want to see your hometown and learn about your life. I also think a small place such as that one would benefit greatly from my knowledge on Earth.” Sparkly responded.
   “Really? That would be…great, actually! Ooh, you would love to meet all my friends! There’s also so many places there I wanna show you! My hometown may be old in some places but it’s slowly developing into something better, too. It’s a strange mix of things right now. It’s pretty fascinating to watch the town grow.” Pencil beamed.
   “I can’t wait to see it! Now, how are you coming along on that commission?” Sparkly asked.
   Pencil pulled out her sketchbook and showed what she had worked on so far. Only the line work was done but that was because she had to show a preview to her client first. Thankfully, he responded very positively, so Pencil could continue coloring later.
   Depicted were all the friends Pencil had met in Friendshire. In one corner, Samurai Equine, Kronos, and Thundy were decorated in their respective armors and forms, thrashing their weapons around and blinding their chunk of the picture in a bright light. On the roads in the background, Dynamo Pad and Bluebell were speeding along in a double-seated racecar, howling in joy while holding onto each other’s hooves. In the right hand corner were a closeup of Trilby Hatter and Elusive Facts. Trilby was waving his merchandise around while Elusive was holding a mic to her mouth, reporting on the latest news. Chelsea was flying up above, creating a floating stream with various aquatic life swimming through.
   Lastly were Pencil Pouch and Sparkly green, soaring above the clouds. If one looked closely enough, they could see the mint green powder trailing behind Sparkly, a symbol for shedding her false identity.
   “This is wonderful, Pencil, especially over here where we’re flying.” Sparkly commented, pointing to the place where her and Pencil were. “Hey, you know what would be an absolute joy? If you direct me, I could fly you to Sire’s Hollow on my back.”
   “F-fly?! I, I don’t know…I’m, um, kinda afraid of heights…” Pencil squeaked.
   “Do not be afraid, my friend. I won’t let a single thing happen to you, I promise.” Sparkly responded kindly, bending down so Pencil could hop on.
   Pencil gingerly climbed on Sparkly’s back, careful not to sit down too hard or fall off. Once she felt secure enough, she looked to Sparkly to signal her to start flying. With a determined expression, Sparkly hunched down and spread her wings. She galloped to gain spread before slowly, steadily, she prepared herself for takeoff.
   Pencil clung onto her for dear life, shutting her eyes tightly. Sparkly made sure to stay low to the ground and to fly at a slow pace so Pencil wouldn’t be so scared. Once Pencil was adjusted to the situation, she dared herself to open her eyes and look around.
   Okay, so this isn’t too bad! she reasoned.
   She allowed herself to feel the wind flow through her mane and breathed in the sharp, fresh air. Sparkly did the same and giggled as her indigio and silvery mane waved through the air like a flag. Her eyes lit up as she looked to the sky, feeling like she was the most free she could ever be. Pencil looked up and felt a serene since of clarity, realizing all her potential was laid out in front of her—she just had to seize it and make the most use of it possible.
   Both mares were at their peak, feeling higher than the distance they were flying in the air. At last, they had finally found themselves.

   “W-well, I definitely see your point there. What I was thinking was, Alhimar, if someone was to go on this journey to fix a part of themselves and came up with nothing, then they would have spent so much time obsessing over something they could have just accepted. Of course, I’m sure this doesn’t account for all things like, let’s say, a terminal disease. I’m only hesitant in Bluebell’s case because while her stuttering is an unfortunate thing to have, it isn’t threatening her life.” Pencil responded to Alhimar, clarifying her stance. It seemed that he would keep to his opinions, however, especially since his were so similar to Sparkly’s. Pencil made no further comment but held to her own viewpoint.
   “Yes! You must seize what is meant for you and become your best self! That is the only true way to live. You mustn’t hold back or surrender to fear as it only holds you back from all you can be,” Sparkly responded to Alhimar’s statement with a fierce glow in her eyes. “Oh, I most definitely embrace my high level of intellect. I will never let anyone take it away from me, especially not after I have finally revealed my true self. I feel free, the freest I can ever feel. I can only continue to feel this way if I keep learning and growing stronger, but I will of course keep it in moderation as you said.
   I will do my upmost to keep Pencil Pouch protected. She is a good friend of mine and she still has much yet to learn. I also believe you have much to learn as well, and with our combined knowledge, we can do many good things so long as we continually give it our all.”

   Pencil and Sparkly were momentarily distracted by what could only be described as a divine transformation. A series of blinding white and red lights emitted from Thundy, surrounding him in calm but powerful pulses of magic. Sparkly could sense something stirring within his conscious. Pencil’s eyes darted around in fascination, soaking up the breathtaking colors that bathed the arena.
   Once the lights dissipated and Thundy was in a more clear view, he appeared to have transformed. Pencil could only guess it had something to do with the griffon’s heart. She leaned over to whisper to Chelsea.
   “Did Thundy do it? Did he finally purify his heart?”

   Sparkly gave Trilby a slight smirk, amused at his antics. Now that he was conversing with Samurai, her attention focused on Alhimar. He had quite a few opinions about both the current fight and Bluebell. She stepped forward and offered a few opinions of her own.
   “Kronos does have the best shot, logistically speaking. He has pulled off quite a few clever maneuvers and his metal body must prevent him from feeling much damage, thus making his recovery quicker,” she spoke up. Her eyes glistened when Alhimar got a read on her, similar to how she has insights about her friends. “You have insight that I have not seen in anyone other than myself. We should converse sometime and exchange knowledge.”
   Pencil edged closer to the conversation to add her own thoughts.
   “I think the general consensus is that Kronos has the highest chance of winning. No doubt about that! Glad to hear your thoughts about the fight, too,” she commented. “Hmm, the way you just described Sparkly…are you a clone from Earth, too? Hehe, probably not, but that would be pretty funny!”
   The mares waited a moment as Alhimar made an exchange with Bluebell. They were glad they are getting along but had some mixed opinions regarding the “curing” of Bluebell’s stuttering. Sparkly and Pencil calmly shared their respective thoughts.
   “I have never heard of a cure for a condition such as this, but I would not rule out its possibility. Anything can happen in this world, it’s all a matter of discovering the unknown. If you were to find a cute somehow, that would be most interesting.” Sparkly stated.
   “Um, I don’t think that’s something that really needs a cure. Bluebell may be hard to understand at times but she isn’t completely incomprehensible,” Pencil said awkwardly, unsure if she was doing the right thing. One look at Bluebell and how she was handling the situation was all she needed to know the answer. “I think that’s Bluebell’s call. If she wants to find a cure, that’s fine, but if not, that’s fine too. It’s best to just respect her wishes and be accepting of her.” She turned to Bluebell and have a friendly smile.

   The battle promised an easy victory for Kronos, making Pencil and Sparkly excited. The promise was easily broken, however, once Thundy charged up and deflected the attack immediately, sending Kronos flying in the air. Pencil looked over to Chelsea, who seemed very concerned by all of this.
   “What does this mean? Is Thundy making a comeback, or is something else going on?” she asked.

   Pencil looked at Bluebell with a concerned frown. She didn’t want anything bad to happen to Kronos or Thundy, either. She wanted the fight to be clean and respectful.
   “Me too, I don’t want to see anyone get hurt out there, especially considering the past few events.” she replied with a lump forming in her throat, recalling what happened with Dynamo’s bullies.
   Sparkly nodded carefully. She too did not want to see anyone hurt. However, she wanted the fight to be reasonable.
   “I do not wish to see anyone harmed, either. However, a few pains here and there are expected in battle. As long as the injuries are minor, everything should be fine.” Sparkly added.

   Sparkly smiled at Trilby. She was glad he was so positive towards her transformation. He seemed to know exactly what it meant; Sparkly's appearance may not be completely her own but she was still herself. Once he and the others finished their own conversations, Sparkly and Pencil settled in to watch the battle between Thundy and Samurai.
   "Both of these guys are pretty skilled fighters. I think Samurai has a better shot since he has fought in a lot more serious battles before." Pencil commented.
   "You make a good point, Pencil Pouch. Thundy, however, has a wide set of shapeshifting abilities. If anything, it may be a close draw." Sparkly replied.
   They watched as Samurai made attempts with his weapons, lighting them up with flames. Thundy, meanwhile, glowed in a variety of different colors as he transformed into a Pokemon. This battle felt more like a light show than a fight. Pencil smiled as she thought of how she could draw a scene like this in the future.
   It seemed that Sparkly was right since Thundy turned out to be the winner. Pencil clapped respectively and Sparkly smiled at Samurai, letting him know that he did a good job despite his loss. Sparkly watched passively as Thundy moved on to the finals. Meanwhile, Pencil got up to talk to Chelsea.
   "I bet you're glad Thundy won! I honestly was expecting Samurai to win since he's so skilled at fighting but I was proven wrong. Thundy is getting stronger. That's very good for him! I bet Samurai is proud of him even though he bested him in the fight, hehe!" she said, rambling a bit in her speech, trying to get out as many thoughts as possible.

   I am originally from Appleloosa, but my current home base is in Canterlot.  My foalhood was rough, partly because I'm a chronic stutterer, but mostly because I was born the only unicorn in a town of earth ponies.  I was poor and illiterate when I was discovered by Spike the dragon in canterlot, and became acquainted with Twilight Sparkle, who taught me how to read and write.  I continued my studies under Princess Celestia.  I love history and eventually became Equestria's first royal historian.  I use magic only sparingly, if at all, because I'm so clumsy with it.

   The Town That Friendship Forgot

   It's not printed on any map ever sold.
   It doesn't show up on any magical maps ever created.
   Not even Princess Twilight knows it exists.
   Still, if you ever choose to leave home...
   If you are trying to find a place to belong, and no other location seems to work for you...
   If you are brave enough to just let your heart lead the way, get past the forests, the fog, and follow a beaten dirt road...
   Then maybe you two can find a huge town called Friendshire.
   Here, anyone can get a second start at life.
   It's a large town that wants for nothing, but it sure could use more citizens.
   It could really use the magic of friendship, but more then that, it could really use some help.

   In his own house, the only asian-themed house on his block, Samurai Equine is busy. In his own make-shift workshop, he has notes and string strung about, random tools on a desk, and more. He is looking at a small metal box with a lot of mechanical, steampunk-style parts all over it.
   "...Nearly a year of toying with this magic contraption, and still no answers! What am I missing?!" Samurai says in frustration as he randomly turns dials, twists a crank, and flips a switch with his hoof. And then... It activates! Part of the box opens up near the top, and magically projects an image. "I did it?! I did it! Wait, is that... I recognize that! It's the front gate!" In a rush, Samurai puts on his formal attire and runs out while holding the box under his arm.
   Meanwhile, at the front of the town, just past a sign that says "Welcome to Friendshire", lies a both just to the side of the main road.
   Inside this booth is a census pony, wearing a fancy jacket and hat that makes him look more like a bellhop.
   He is just sitting in there, bored out of his mind, until Samurai runs up. "Excuse me! Sorry to bother you, but has any pony come this way?" He asks. The census pony shakes his head. "Nope.    Samurai looks at his box again, the magical projection gone for now. "I think this thing is telling me that we really need to start increasing the populace. But how? How do we attract more ponies into living her?" He asks himself, looking up in to the slightly foggy distance and trying to brain storm some ideas.
