  1. I would have said no too. Lauren Faust, you dark, dark, woman.

Yep. Things like AJ's parents, Scootaloo's disability, and handling a lesser death like a pet were all things that Faust wanted to eventually tackle. It turned out that we did get these items ... but more symbolically. There is a sense or authorial artistry with these topics that makes Pony stand out. The better shows today do the same thing.

Admittedly I did not know that; though I'm not too shocked with the outcome.

Honestly, the only actual death-related thing I would like to see addressed would be AJ's parents; outside of that anything else might be seen as forced; depending on execution.

TFtM did add a little to the impact any passing would have had on AJ if you want to take that angle ("She cries on the inside"). Note that the Morrow wrote both eps, but I am not sure how much she had to do with the shooting starts, and how much was the boarders (Sibsy) with the showrunners.

  2. Hmmmm. Okay.

    I win now

    :D

To be serious, the site now allows some off topic convo's and also duplicate threads. The exceptions are the Mega-Threads. We don't want two LPW threads ... because I would win in both. :)

  3. Overall I found them to be great reads, and a few were very thought provoking. I wasn't the type to dislike Sombra, but his issue really made me wish we saw more of him in the show. Nightmare Moon's was superb too, and (for me) improved the Nightmare Rarity arc a little. I haven't read #5 yet but I'm safe in saying that the series was a success for me. :)

  4. Why one would be happy/glad that they became a brony?

Two reasons for me, and one is likely something that is not typical.

    1. My two teenage daughters were fans before me. Showing an interest in your kids taste in activities, hobbies, and media is important ... but sharing an interest ... it is a rewarding experience that elevates my individual enjoyment of the show to heights that is hard to explain. +1 parenting moment.

    2. I have met many people who have become close friends (or at least I consider them friends). They are individuals that I would have otherwise not have met if I did not become a Brony.

  5. The Element of Empathy.

    :P

If you focus on the Mane Six elements, I have five of the traits to some degree (ugh I hate talking my self up). Some people would attribute Generosity, some Kindness, and my family have already weighed in on this and said I would likely be Loyalty.

Until I fire lightning bolts from my fingers ... I can't in good conscious say Magic.

  6. Sorry if this isn't the right forum to post this.

I was creating a game with Adobe Flash CS5, with ActionScript 3.0. But I don't know how to add a MovieClip from the library to the game via CODING and how to change its stats. Could somebody help me?

I moved this to Creative Resources as you are seeking help for a design or art based project tool.

  7. Greatest role model of all time? Yes, for me atleast. For someone else? That depends on who the person.

Right there! You see that ... that about nails it. Each character and the viewer's appreciation and affection is seen through some form of filter. Whether it is need or bias or longing or something more nebulous, these characters will appeal to people differently. What does Pinkie show me? That it is perfectly OK let free social conventions, embrace your inner Emerson.

If you distill Pinkie down for me ... she is the pony embodiment of carpe diem. That makes her a value added role model, yes. Life is short and full of hell and heartache. To desire to seek out and find joy in this world ... well that is a wonderful trait.

  8. I hate annoying and unrealistic characters, personally. I wouldn't hate her as a real person, I just think she's annoying, personally.

I tend to do things similar to her too, but she's still written horribly. She was like conceived as a character that could feel real, but it feels like everything she does is written by people who just want to make her "cute". All of her dialog is just annoying and lame.

Season 5 appears to be changing things for her. :)

  9. I don't know if this has been answered or not and quite frankly I'm annoyed with it, but why can't we use emotes and customizations on the mobile version? By customization, I mean like text color, making letters and words bold, underlining words and phrases, and such so on. My computer of course has them but whenever I go on the site on my iPad I can't do any of that or use any emotes. I'd like it better if we had them on the mobile site since I can't use my computer right now to use a image for my signiature. I'm sure others are annoyed about this as well and I'm not the only one. :/

The mobile version is not in house or custom designed. It is what comes with the forum software we use, IPB. It does have its ... flaws.

If you would prefer to use the desktop site just scroll down to the bottom and click on the "Full Version" button

  10. Alrighty, so I was just wondering, but does anyone have any favorite human in Equestria fanfictions that they would like to recommend to others?

Moved this over to Sugarcube Corner as it is asking about go ideas for fan created content consumption.

  11.       Hello! I am trying to see what other people think of my writing, and thought that there's no better way to do that than to learn what the people like!

So, what I need you guys to do is make up some quick story ideas and I'll try to write a story using all of it!

I need: Main character, side characters, what they're trying to accomplish, a setting, and whatever else you'd want to see in the story.

Share this around and try to get me as many suggestions as possible. When the story is finished (it may take a little while to get finished, depending on how fast you guy's reply to this post), I will post it on here so you can read the /hopefully/ masterpiece.

    Thanks guys! :),

    Cerberus.

I went ahead and moved this to the Creative Resources Forum since you are seeking input and ideas.

  12. What has gotten most of my attention is the mega-thread rule (such a cool fitting name :P).

My interpretation of this is that the count to a million game (or CTAM) and similar games like Last Poster Wins will not have any discussion at all except what the game is about (so in CTAM's case, only the number can be posted and nothing else...although I'm not sure how you can be on-topic in the last poster wins game except "I win", "no I win now!" :P).

If the new rule is trying to address the difficult ability to moderate such a massive thread, and there is no other way of going about this, then I understand and suggest putting a cap to the number of posts a game can have in a given amount of time (whatever is manageable). This doesn't have to be a built-in auto-lock thread everytime a post count has been reached, but perhaps a moderator could lock the game for a period ranging from an hour to a whole day (or after a certain number of posts have been reached), just to ease the moderation process. Of course this would...definitely take a lot of time for all the mega-threads that exist.... so I'm not sure at the moment the fairest way of going about this.

I speak as a user of the forums and not the creator of this game, specifically.

Or simply yet, add more moderators. One must expand in response to growth or the needs of the community.

Both CTAM and LPW are naturally conversational. The new rules are about giving more flexibility to members, and about not over-moderating :)

They are not because topics are hard to moderate.

In the end we want members to have a little more comfort in posting but also not wind up with a dozen "Who is your Best Pony?" Topics.

  13. As for other threads, duplicate topics may exist under reasonable circumstances. We’ll no longer merge or lock duplicate threads, unless the staff deems it a duplicate of an existing mega-thread, or if the duplicate threads are spammed. Whatever the case may be, the staff reserves the right to merge or lock a thread.

Off-topic posts are permitted as organic extensions of a conversation, provided they do not fall under the above listed exceptions. The general rule of thumb for everyone is to avoid marching into a thread and abruptly changing the discussion without prior input. If a conversation isn’t going in the direction you’d prefer, consider making your own thread rather than forcing the existing topic to march to your fife

On this I have one thing to say.

    kqnqn.jpg

I appreciate everyone who pointed this out recently, and these are changes that I personally welcome and hope will make the forums more user friendly and conversational.

As an addendum, all Fan Clubs are, by default, not to be duplicated. So that whole forum is considered a Mega-Thread.

Though if you want to make ten Rarity Fan Clubs I won't mind. ;)

  14. While I have to commend the episode for portraying every stage of grief, the fact remains that it's an overblown reaction to hibernation, not an actual death, thus the episode disregards the difference between grief and separation anxiety, the latter of which should have been more realistically portrayed in the episode. The same corporate mandates that allowed MLP to exist and flourish are unfortunately continuing to hold it back from its true narrative potential. The writers, if given free reign, would have made this episode about an actual death, and it would have worked. Many other shows in children's television have done it and handled it with amazing tact (Sesame Street is the first one that comes to mind). If it would have been over a death, it would have been very fitting and justifiable among the earlier episodes this season in dealing with psychological states and actually being the second one to deal with loss. Unfortunately, it seems very self-centered and takes Rainbow Dash's character back quite a few steps to show that all of this chaos was over what would amount to about 4 months of lost time. Wrecking the winter season in Equestria, when everything is put into perspective, took her character back even further than any simple bragging about how "awesome" she is ever could. All of this could have been avoided within the singular context of this episode if that one plot point, Tank's hibernation, had been changed to more realistically reflect a death.

It seems as if "Tanks for the Memories" was a last-ditch effort to make up for the brevity of the emotional scenes in "Castle Sweet Castle" and the fact that said scenes had to share an episode with a B-plot that was stretched thin. It would have made much more sense to have better addressed these themes in the preceding episode by cutting the narrative padding of Spike's distraction and the Mane 6's bickering in order to focus more on Twilight's emotional conflict, which would have felt much more natural and realistic to portray as grief because it was, you know, an actual loss.

The best point of the episode, however, has to be the visuals. We got to see quite a few things here that we don't normally see in this show, like fall and winter, as well as Cloudsdale and Pegasus culture. Pegasi changing the weather seems to be the best opportunity for the animators to really show their stuff in the sheer scale, dynamics, and amount of objects and movement on the screen, and the winter scenes are great as an occasional break from the normally green and blooming Ponyville.

Overall, this episode seemed to have everything in the right place except one major point that would have made the conflict more relatable and changed the justifications for everything that happened in the plot. There was a clear line that shouldn't have been blurred out, but was. It seems to be one of those divisive episodes, either you agree with what Dash did or you didn't. I personally go both ways.

I don't know. I have always preferred when the show (or any form of art) doesn't throw up a neon sign and says "this is what the story is about!" To me, my favorite scenes in FiM when they refuse to use dialog or viewer expectations to tell the story in a scene.

    Rarity and Spike falling

    Scootaloo throwing away her possessions

Spike giving Rarity the Fire Ruby

    The shooting stars

    The cancer pony

    Inspiration Manifestation

It is a long list. Telling a hidden story like this isn't a cop out, it is brave and sublimely artistic.
