What do you mean by significance? If you mean like, if people hold the symbol dear to heart as an Australian symbol, it's not extremely significant. It's just some stars in the sky of the southern hemisphere. Of course I guess the main significant thing about it is that it's the only unique object on our flag. The union jack is obviously the British flag and shows that we're a British colony, and the Commonwealth star (the big star in the bottom left) is just there to symbolis...

symbolise our membership of the British Commonwealth. So it's only real significance is that it's one of our only national symbols. Aside from the Australian coat of arms.
