Habits are a weird thing.
For years now, me and my friend start our steam chat with specific emoticon/emoji/whatever you'd call them. We don't greet each other, no hi, no good mornings, nothing, just the emotes. Specifically, I send a chicken, he sends a duck. My chicken has changed with time, as I have gotten better looking emoji, but his duck  has always been the same, it's this wooden duck-toy thing, the name of which is ":DuckPlz:" 

I have no memory of why or how this started, but nowadays that's like our secret handshake, it is our way of saying "Hi, I'm now online". And if you really think about it, it's very weird. Every single day when we both are online, the chat starts with those two small pictures, and in some days, they are the only thing we send each other.
