The character models from My Little Pony: The Movie look nice, but I just can’t get used to them.

@Captain Clark God, I don't know what they did to the buildings. They all look like shiny plastic. And that pirate ship, blargh. I rather dug the undersea visuals, at least.
When I focus enough, the "floating overtop backgrounds" thing is sort of the case with the show as well, but this movie's attempts at depth-of-field and frequent use of hideous 3D objects (I'm not saying CG because the 2D stuff is drawn on a computer as well) make it stand out a lot more.

Been a while since I've looked at the movie, so I don't quite remember what I thought of the backgrounds. But the character models always looked weird. I guess the word would be "squishy"? I remembered seeing Pinkie Pie falling from the first trailer, and the change in her expression seemed unnatural and... "forced"? It's more notable when the ponies are shown from the front and their snouts seemed so blocky when comparing them to their show models.

@Number62 Yeah, I dunno. I figure they changed the character geometry to give a greater sense of depth perception, but I kinda wish they had figured out something different. I've heard hand-drawn animation is said to "squish," which is why it's so beloved among animation enthusiasts, but in this movie it doesn't always look right. As I've mentioned, though, I can't quite get behind them in still shots either, and I can't think of a good reason why that is.
