You listed Horizon: Zero Dawn (which is a stupid name) and Uncharted 4. Those are 1st party games so they actually know best how to get the most performance (as little as there is) out of a PS4 or PS4 Pro. Also note that both of those run at a slideshow mere 30 FPS, (which shows the respective devs aiming for 4K rather than a smooth framerate) while Platinum Stars and Dragon Ball Xenoverse run at 60 FPS. The cel-shading is used precisely because it's less taxing, so it can run at a higher framerate.

Platinum Stars has character models that are WORLDS away in quality when compared to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. My question is why most "anime-esque" games that offer a cel-shaded presentation do not offer visuals like Platinum Stars (specifically in regard to the character models). The complexity and detail on those models is downright jaw-dropping. In general, cel-shading seems to be used as an excuse to not put effort into character model composition.

When I bring up Horizon: Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4, I do so merely to showcase that there is significant overhead available to these devs. In other words, they don't really have an excuse to be using character models that would fit at home in a Ps3 game.

Speaking of a Ps3 game take a look at the last gen Idolm@ster:

^I very rarely see any new current gen cel-shaded games that use character models/ animations which surpass even this last gen (semi) low-budget title.

Frame rate is not on trial here. I have no problem with them lowering fps to a 30 lock, but why don't most devs incorporate highly detailed character models into cel-shaded games?  It's very clear from recent Japanese games like NieR:Automata, Final Fantasy 15, and The Last Guardian that Japanese developers generally prioritize character models over anything else in the game. So why does this design philosophy not carry over to Cel-Shaded games? Another good example that I cannot get out of my mind :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQruYctgUTk

In fact, The Last Guardian's main protagonist WAS Cel-shaded, and if you compare the detail of his model to that of the giant "bird-dog" thing (as people like to call it lol), Trico, it looks like a full generation gap. This is an amazing example since the game includes both cel-shaded and non-cel-shaded character models that you can compare directly to one another, and within the same game can tell the huge difference of quality. The stark backgrounds here are also on display contrasting to the higher detail put on Trico himself.

  2. No, it would not be a bad idea. Execution is EVERYTHING. How many people thought a new generation of My Little Pony was a "good" idea? That's what I thought.

I will say this though, the chance of the execution being of acceptable quality is slim-to-none, and that is even with the writers' stellar performance in Seasons 4-6.

Is it possible to do well? Definitely. Would I like to see them try? Yes! Would most of the fans like to see their precious pony waifus being stolen by big, buff, smexy stallions? Somehow, I doubt it U_U

  3. I think she feels more comfortable around her friends by this point. Acting slightly more "girly" is merely a result of this. After her lesson in Read it and Weep I feel like her season 5-6 personality is a nice little bit of continuity to her character progression; seeing her less insecure about not always appearing as the "super badass" of the group. Another good example would be in Tanks for the Memories, wherein she feels more comfortable crying her eyes out in front of her friends and allowing them to comfort her.

  4. How come so many damn games that use cel shading techniques, look like freakin' ps3/ xbox 360 releases? I find it absolutely mind-boggling how Idolm@ster Platinum Stars has better Cel-shaded character models than ANY other game in existence! For comparison:

(Remember to set all videos to 1080p, btw :P) And before you ask, yes, Platinum Stars runs in real time on PS4; it's not pre-rendered.

I mean, the only other game I have seen in which the character models don't look completely half-assed is Ni No Kuni 2, but even there it's clearly a step down from Platinum Stars.

Now, I'm sure many of you will claim "Oh well Idolm@ster focuses SOLELY on the character models and there isn't much else to render due to the way the game plays". Now, that is most assuredly a good point, but Cel-Shading is NOT a taxing graphical effect (as far as I am aware).

If you would kindly take a brief look at the videos below:

^It is clear as day that the extra graphical prowess Uncharted 4 & Horizon Zero Dawn showcase is NOT on display with any of these cel-shaded games. So, since even a base Ps4 with a measely 1.8 TFLOPS of GPU power AND a CPU running at ONLY 1.6 Ghz can somehow handle games like this, why the hell can't ALL cel-shaded games have character models that look as good as Platinum Stars? Just chalk it up to the developers' laziness?

There's no inventory to manage, no stats to level up, it's not a proper RPG like System Shock is, it's just a shooter with a perk system.

So, in other words, it's like going from Fallout 3 to Fallout 4?

I never really considered Bioshock as an RPG to begin with. I'm sure the initial marketing tried to appeal to those who had played System Shock tho, so I could see some calling false advertisement. Generally I consider myself a Bioshock detractor, as pretty much all my friends IRL absolutely LOVED it not to mention all the amazing scores gaming review sites gave it. I played it, several times in fact, on the hardest difficulty setting no less. There is a certain "hook" to it. The open-ended levels that allow for tons of exploration while simultaneously appearing tight and claustrophobic really makes you wanna NOT stop playing. On the other hand, the gameplay is a little stale imo. The weapon upgrades are as run-of-the-mill as it gets. Some perks are cool, but there isn't much balancing here; you either have something insanely awesome that makes the game too freakin easy, or you get these little insignificant perks that hardly make any difference. As I stated before, I am not a fan of the overall world as it is too depressing for my liking. Graphics are kinda bleh too, especially on character models. Not surprising considering its a game from 2007 lol. The lighting was damn impressive tho.

Bioshock 2 was a huge step up imo. But strangely enough, everyone I know HATES it with a passion O_O. I just don't get it lol. It seems the common response to my inquiry would be "Oh Bioshock 2 had a shitty story. 1 was so much better". -.-

#1, I actually think they had narratives rivaling each other in terms of quality. and #2, there is a hellava lot more to a game than merely it's story. Like jesus, if all you want is a good story, go read a book or watch a movie, or something. Games are meant to be enjoyable to PLAY not merely watch. Bioshock 2's gameplay >>> Bioshock 1 by FAR, just saying :o

Yeah it takes place on a space station

It has a dark cyberpunk aesthetic which really plays in well with the fact that you're stranded in space with fleshy amalgamations and murderous AI, easily the best horror game I've played yet.

What in particular do you find "dumbed down" about Bioshock?

  8. 1 minute ago, chaton said:

I can't offer any input since I genuinely think Bioshock is just a dumbed down System Shock and never personally liked the setting or found it fun to play

Well, I never played System Shock so I wouldn't know lol. I'm not the biggest fan of Bioshock's overly depressing "utopia in ruin" setting. Could use a bit of brightening up imo. System Shock was in a space station, right? I would assume it was fairly similar in tone to Bioshock except minus the "under the sea" vibe :o

System Shock 3 (which is coming)

You have any idea if a Bioshock 3 (as in a proper sequel to the 1st & 2nd games) is ever coming out? Personally, I wouldn't have any issue with Levin not being involves since Bioshock 2 was significantly better than the first (imo). I think it would be crazy awesome to play a new Bioshock game on modern day consoles/ pc with Unreal engine 4. Normal gameplay would probably look like the CG opening to Bioshock 2:  https://youtu.be/xa6CVWmIysI?t=2m

  10. If any of you have not watched Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Death Note, or Elfen Lied, then you haven't lived yet xD Those three I can recommend to pretty much ANY anime fan out there (unless you cannot tolerate a little gore ofc)

Outside of those GOD tier shows, I can suggest the following:

    Anohana

    Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-Chan

    FLCL (FuriKuri)

    Nichijou

    Haruhi

    Lucky Star

    YuruYuri

    Kodomo no Jikan

    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

    Gunslinger Girl

It gets better and better as it goes on. Especially in season two, more of the bigger story unfolds and draws you in.

I can definitely confirm that Star vs TFOE gets WAY better in season 2. I haven't watched all that much (maybe around 15 episodes total) but the delineation in quality is clear as day).

Although, I don't think even season 2 has managed to trump the best season 1 episode, Mewberty :P <-- That shit was like the tippy-top-tier episodes from My Life as a Teenage Robot,  'cept with MUCH better animation =^-^=

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen could do with a sequel too. Liked that game a fair bit.

^Hell fucking yes. That would be within my top 6 wanted sequels definitely

    #1 Sunshine

    #2 Wind Waker

    #3 SA3

#4 Shadow of the Colossus (tlg does not count im talking direct sequel with the same type of qameplay)

#5 Xenoblade Chronicles X (xenoblade 2 doesn't count since that is a sequel to xenoblade not "X")

    #6 Dragon's Dogma =^-^=

(I also think Dragon's Dogma has the greatest chance of happening SOON. I can easily see it announced at this or next year's E3 presentations. We all know how much Capcom is obsessed with catering to the "western" market. DD was, imo, their best "western" attempt ever!)

I had forgotten how much I loved "Pani Poni Dash!". I just started re-watching it. It's laugh out loud funny! The show doesn't make a lot of sense, but the opening theme rocks!

Well, then I'm no brony. I follow the fandom because of the show, but I think a few fan made songs are way better then in the show. There is just way more dept and emotional issues in the fan made ones. Like Lullaby for a princess and The moon rises. But the show is the driving part. Without the show the fandom will quit very quickly and the fandom only makes it even better.

Idk, you sound like a brony in denial to me :o

Why are you so hesitant to call yourself a brony? It's not something to be ashamed of, lmao. Practically 95% of the posters on this site are massive bronies.

^I swear that opening is more horrifying than any horror movie released in the past 20 years e.e

  16. Scruffy embodies the fabled "third gender". What is the third gender? It will forever remain Scruffy's little secret :o
