Contradictory, much, Twilight? Inconsistancies right from the start.

Ok, since I'm re-re-re-rewatching old episodes (in no particular order), one thing I've noticed, that I hadn't before, on the first few watches...is that Twilight Sparkle is a big, fat liar!!!! Ok, maybe just an inconsistent character.

In the episode, Look Before you Sleep, Twi mentions that she's always wanted to have a slumber party, and even has a guide book on it (which- again, she says she's been waiting for a chance to use)....buuuuut...in the very first episode, Twilight, herself, brushes off other ponies who attempt to try and make friends with her; both in Canterlot and in Ponyville. (does she not realize that other ponies/ friends are needed to hold things like slumber parties? No, wait- she has a guide book, so she has to know she couldn't hold one with just her own company) And also believes that fate doesn't rest on her making friends (and has believed this since she was a filly, as seen in A Canterlot Wedding pt 1). It's clear that she didn't want or need any, so why foster hopes of “always” wanting to hold a slumber party, and carry the guide book in her library?

Good thing she doesn't represent the element of honesty.

Also, as a side note.....does anyone else wonder what sort of “royal business” Spike was away in Canterlot doing?

Well in the first episode she brushed off those people because she was worried about NMM returning. So rather than focus on slumber parties and making friends, she "wants to get this done as quickly as possible, so she can research more about NMM". So she may have really wanted to have friends in the past, but either her devotion to her studies as a student of the local demi-god prevented that, or she was busy trying to prevent pony satan from returning.

"What are you trying to accomplish, putting yourselves in danger like that? Trying to see "justice" done? Is that really justice, though? Aren't you just doing this because you want a little spice in your boring lives? What's the difference between that and a criminal who gets his kicks by murdering people? You see what I'm getting at? There's still a lot of time left. Give it some thought."

no, but as I already said- she never wanted friends, even as a filly (see Big brother best friends forever song) She specifically says that "Wheni was just a filly, I found it rather silly to see how many other ponies i could meet." she didn't know what she's need friends, ever in her life (other than her brother, apparently), so it's not the issue of her wanting friends but being too busy in her studies to try and make them. She didn't want them; didn't think she even needed them; from fillyhood, onward, until Celestia forced her to go to Ponyville to try and make them, whether she wanted to, or not. (and she pretty much was forced to, seeing as how the fate of Equestria relied on her making them, to become even stronger, herself)

So the fact still remains, if she never wanted friends and didn't think she needed them, as made clear in several episodes, then why, all of a sudden, would she be saying she's "ALWAYS" wanted to have a slumber party. With who? Certainly not the ponies she didn't need or want to be friends with, ever in her life.

It never outright says that she never wanted friends, if she didn't at all then she wouldn't have been able to make friends in ponyville so easily. How else would she have made friends with Cadance? Surly if she didn't want interaction at all, they would not have developed to the point they have a secret handshake. She may not like meeting new people, but as a filly she befriended Cadance. And maybe she saw the slumber party as a learning experience or a science experiment, thus her adherence to the guide. In a good social experiment, you need to have a control, and a basic outline. She seemed to want to follow the guide, so even if she may have not wanted friends, there are other reasons as to why she wanted a slumber party.

Okay here my rational explanation..... The events of the slumber party, her obtaining and planning to use the book, and before she left canterlot for ponyville are three separate events with some time between them (maybe a year?) so it makes sence.

The phrase "I've always wanted...." Is verrry subjective and "always" can refer to a time as short as 8 months or so..... So it's really not inconsistency your experiencing, it's character development.

One thing to always keep in mind about this show, or any show for that matter, is that for certain subjects you have to accept that writers don't remember. They, or somebody else, wants a certain scene, or song, and boom it happens and to hell with continuity. As fans we have to make it work for us and overlook certain things. This is a good example.

The slumber party is simply a case of bad show continuity.

I suspect Twilight's desire to hold a slumber party is a holdover from when she was a filly, but she either didn't have any friends who wanted to, or just didn't have many friends because she was, even then, more into studying than friends. As she grew older, and became ever more engrossed in her studies, she had even less time and desire to make any new friends, and so still did nothing of the sort, until she was finally kicked out of the Royal Canterlot Library by Celestia and told to make friends, and fate conspired to give her her chance at a slumberparty.
